[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant birds...

2017-02-24 Thread Marie P. Read
As others have noted, lotsa geese going over right now (and have been all
morning)

Also on Mt Pleasant:

Killdeer
Horned Lark (one singing briefly plus a flock of about 25 flying around)
Red-winged Blackbird

Another Red-winged Blackbird is already noisily claiming part of the beaver
marsh behind my property.
And a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers has been enjoying the suet for a couple of
weeks. (The female's been around all winter)

Sounds a bit like spring out there.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant birds etc

2015-12-24 Thread Marie P. Read
On my pre-feast walk on Mt Pleasant Road, few bird species, but a cool
observation (or 2).

I'd noticed a Red-tailed Hawk flying at one point. Later on my way back, I
heard a brief Red-tailed Hawk-like call from the woods on my right. My
interpretation was Blue Jay, and wondered what motivated its mimickery. I stood
looking all around for the earlier hawk, but it wasn't immediately visible. I
carried on walking and suddenly there was the hawk circling far over in the
opposite direction from where I'd heard the call. Those jays are so smart!

The other observation: 2 Spring Peepers calling from the swamp behind my house.
Not sure how I feel about that...:-(At least the forecast for January 1st
is more more seasonable temperatures (ie COLD)

Anyway, Happy Holidays to all!

There was also a single Lapland Longspur at Mt Pleasant yesterday, mixed in
with about 200 Snow Buntings and about 50 Horned Larks. And an immature Bald
Eagle floated by. And kinda weird to hear Cardinals and Juncos in full song
while staring at a flock of Snow Buntings.

2014-02-24 Thread Marie P. Read
Hi all,

As I turned onto Mt Pleasant Road from Mineah around 3pm Sunday, I was
delighted to hear the deep resonant drumming of a Pileated Woodpecker coming
from the woods to the east.

At the top of the hill a flock of maybe 50 Snow Buntings took flight, and I
tried to keep them in my binoculars on them as they circled around higher and
higher into the sky. Soon they were barely visible, and for a micro-second I
lost my concentration…and they were gone…apparently to the north. Heading out?

On the way back I saw a dark morph Rough-legged Hawk circling over the fields
near the farm. A couple of days ago I watched it (presume same bird) catch a
rodent on the far side of a field. There also has been a lighter morph bird up
there occasionally. But Rough-legged Hawks have been rare up there this winter
overall.

This morning at the feeders, two elegant male Purple Finches…first I've seen
since fall.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant birds

2013-10-12 Thread Susan Fast
Intrigued by Marie's measurements from yesterday, I walked Mt. Pleasant Rd.
this morning. Not much in the fields, but the woods and brushy areas had
more birds than I have seen up there in a long time. Going from Mineah to
Baker Hill Rds. I encountered

ROBINS --About a hundred or so foraging in field and wood, chasing, flying
crazy

RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS - saw 15-20 right along the road, scattered, surely
many more

GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS - 1 small flock

HERMIT THRUSH - 6 at least, in a group

GRACKLES - 2

E. BLUEBIRDS -- several

BROWN CREEPER - 1

YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS -- many scattered along

WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS - 2 good-sized flocks

FIELD SPARROW - only 1

SONG SPARROWS - several

Also multiples of CARDINALS, JUNCOS, CHICKADEES, BLUE JAYS, PILEATED, HAIRY
and DOWNY WOODPECKERS, CEDAR WAXWINGS.

2 GRAY SQUIRRELS

1 MONARCH BUTTERFLY (which brings my total for the year to 4).

Also surprisingly, still a lot of fruit (berries) on vines and bushes.

A brisk walk up Mt Pleasant Road this morning (10:45 - 11:45) turned up the
following:

Small flock of Horned Larks
Eastern Bluebird pair (by observatory where they often nest)

12 or so American Pipits, 9 of which obligingly perched on the wires giving me
great views of their elongated hind claws).

And here's a list of data that I will NOT be reporting to eBird ;-)))

Time 60 mins
Average heart rate 109
Max heart rate 139
Calories burned 246
Time spent in "the zone" 21 mins
Number of woollybear caterpillars relocated 19

A quick walk up on Mt Pleasant Rd this morning netted the following:

American Pipits several in the newly ploughed field opposite the radio tower.
There was also a flock of Horned Larks there the day it was ploughed, not new
arrivals, I surmise, but simply those unfortunate individuals whose nests had
been trashed by the plough (yes, I know I spell that word differently than most
of you...!!).

Many Bobolinks in song over the dandelion-y field east of the radio tower

Savannah Sparrows - several

In the woods: Least Flycatcher, Red-eyed Vireo, Baltimore Oriole, Common
Yellowthroat

Lots Tree and Barn Swallows

European Starling doing a convincing imitation of an Eastern Phoebe song, while
frantically performing its wing-wave display on a nest box.

OK, now off to England, where starlings are somewhat more appreciated than
here..!

2011-02-20 Thread Marie P Read
On Sunday afternoon, around 3:30, there was a flock of 12 Horned Larks with
about half as many Snow Buntings flying in the fields at the eastern end of Mt
Pleasant Rd. The same number of Horned Larks were also in the same area,
feeding in the snow-free patches of ground, on Friday afternoon. Whether they
were there during Saturday's blizzard conditions, I don't know, but I WASN't!!

Earlier today, a Common Raven flew over the yard calling.
And Mr and Mrs Cardinal seem to be doing a bit of courting—he's pursuing her,
in a kind of polite way, everywhere she goes.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant birds

2009-12-17 Thread Marie P Read
Hi all,

Joining the late American Robin in the yard this afternoon, was a very
cold, hungry-looking Belted Kingfisher perched low down over the
still-open water of the creek next to my house, giving a very slow quiet
rattled call as if it were too cold to make much effort!

I've been trying to calculate how long the robin might have sufficient
food before it has to search elsewhere, based on the number of
winterberries left. But a small flock of Cedar Waxwings arrived around
4:00 pm to feed on the robin's food supply, messing up my arithmetic! They
flew off before I had the chance to get out into the blind to photograph
them.

And in a field at the east end of Mt Pleasant Road, 5 Horned Larks flew up
as I drove by.
