[cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant Snow Buntings

2023-03-01 Thread Marie P. Read
10:30 this morning, a flock of a couple of hundred Snow Buntings was flying
around the fields at the east end of Mt Pleasant Road. They were also seen by
Steve Fast and me on Sunday morning.
There's not much food up there since the fields were mowed so closely and there
are very few weeds, so I can't imagine the buntings will stick around.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Rough-legged Hawk

2020-12-22 Thread Marie P. Read
Around 11 this morning, I watched a Rough-legged Hawk circling over the fields
along Mt Pleasant Road, before making its way slowly westward toward the
observatory. Hope it sticks around...it's been a number of years since this
species spent the winter on Mt Pleasant.

Also, yesterday around the same time, I glimpsed what I presume was the Common
Redpoll flock foraging far on the south side of the Mt Pleasant weedy field
(south side of the road)

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Common Redpolls

2020-12-07 Thread Marie P. Read
Around 11 this morning, I caught sight of a largish flock of Common Redpolls
swirling over the clover field along the dirt road to the communication towers
on Mt Pleasant Rd. This is essentially where Gladys Birdsall first found them a
couple of weeks ago. I go up there most days, and while the redpolls are not
consistently visible, I bet they're around.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant Common Redpolls...

2020-11-28 Thread Jane Leff
At 1pm, redpolls are still there! I parked at the corner of Mount Pleasant
and the unmarked road of towers, (not to be confused with Tower Rd.) About
0.2 mile up that unmarked road, on left in the overgrown fields, were
swarms of redpolls! I cheated and used the Merlin recordings to attract
them & boy did it work! They came right up to me and swarmed all around me.
Heaven!

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant American Kestrels

2020-07-22 Thread Marie P. Read
Hi Cayugabirders,

The annual late-summer build-up of (presumably pre-migration) American Kestrels
has begun on Mount Pleasant. I counted 11 kestrels yesterday afternoon, and saw
at least 9 this afternoon. You can see them perched on the wires and utility
poles along the dirt road to the large communication towers on the north side
of Mt Pleasant Road. On breezy days they often hover over the fields before
plunging down after prey. Wonderful to watch.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Rd. Red-tailed Hawks with nest material!

2020-04-02 Thread Marie P. Read
On my walk up Mt Pleasant Rd this afternoon I watched a Red-tailed Hawk pair
circling over Gladys Birdsall's woods, a couple of minutes later one of them
came cruising low over the woods with a trailing clump of grasses in its
talons...nesting material. It headed slowly west and disappeared behind the
trees which makes me think the possible nest might be a bit beyond Gladys'
property. First I've seen evidence of nesting in this spot although I have
often seen RTHA there, usually in winter. I HAVE seen evidence of RTHA nesting
at the junction of Mt Pleasant Rd and Baker Hill Rd, but maybe this is a
different pair.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Golden Eagle

2019-11-17 Thread Marie P. Read
Hi Cayuugabirders,
This morning 10:30 ish I was walking on Mt Pleasant Rd when I noticed two
raptors slowly approaching from the north, both soaring with a slight dyhedral
wing shape . One was confirmed as a Turkey Vulture after it was close enough
for me to see its red head, but the other gave me pause: very large size, no
obviously unfeathered head, very dark overall including underneath, no white or
light underwing pattern, not a flat enough wing position for a Bald Eagle. I
kept it in my binocular view as it approached and finally flew directly above
me, when I got a brief of its golden brown head/nape. So I'm calling it an
adult Golden Eagle.
WOW!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant Common Redpolls...singing!

2019-03-26 Thread Gladys Birdsall
This morning 3/26, I went out to the garage and realized the chorus I
was hearing were Common Redpolls.  They were really singing away. Went
in to grab my binocs.  Note-it is hard to find tiny grey birds in
treetops of grey leafless trees.  Not till they flew did I finally see
where they were.  Some were preening, chasing each other and then some
started flying back to the west and southwest, back into the woods.
This was about 9:30 AM. They were very active and vocal, and had all
dispersed by about 10:15.  I think they were warming up in all that
sunshine.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant Common Redpolls...singing!

2019-03-24 Thread Barbara Bauer Sadovnic
Encouraged by Marie’s report, I went looking for the Tucker Rd. redpolls, and
found them, around 5:45! About 40, chattering, in the scrubby apple tree I’ve
found them before, and in the weeds below. I hadn’t seen them since March 1,
though I’ve been there many times.

And nearby was a mockingbird, showing off everything he’s ever heard. Possibly
the mockingbird now can speak redpoll.

Yesterday (Sunday) afternoon there was a flock of 100 or so Common Redpolls
over the weedy field between the radio tower on Mt Pleasant Rd and the farm in
the dip between the hills. Later (around 3pm) I saw presumably the same flock
in the weedy field on the easternmost hill of MT Pleasant Rd where they spent
many weeks previously. Despite many weed stems, there are very few seeds left
in these fields, but I am still only getting a couple of redpolls at my feeders
each day. So the large flock must be finding plenty of wild food.

And on another topic, anyone seeing Wild Turkeys displaying yet?

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant COMMON REDPOLLS - a few

2019-01-24 Thread Marie P. Read
Hi all,

There was a small (20 or so) flock of Common Redpolls near the roadside on Mt
Pleasant Rd about 1 hour ago.
And just now in my yard, a male House Finch was softly and tentatively warbling
his song from hidden in a shrub as the rain turns to snow!

[cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant Common Redpolls new location

At around 9am this morning, a large flock of Common Redpolls was flying around
the field just west of the observatory, south side of the road. Lots of very
dense weed stems in here, so they’re hard to see unless they’re in flight.

Marie's redpoll flock on Mount Pleasant continues to grow, with over 150
individuals now present, including a female HOARY REDPOLL found yesterday
by Sarah Toner and Logan Kahle. I saw it for a few minutes first thing this
morning in a part of the group close to the road before they started to
drift farther south. The Snow Bunting flock that is often associated with
the redpolls now numbers around 275 birds, with a handful of Horned Larks
and a couple (as many as 5 reports) LAPLAND LONGSPURS around the edges.
This is all along the slope at the east end of Mount Pleasant Road.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant COMMON REDPOLLS!

2018-12-02 Thread Marie P. Read
It's been quite the birdy day up here on the mountain.

A flock of 13 Common Redpolls was feeding alongside the road when I came back
from my walk in the rain (11 am). They were feeding on chickory seeds, and flew
off into the weedy field opposite the radio tower on Mt Pleasant Rd to join a
growing flock of Snow Buntings that I have seen there regularly over the past
few days. It will be well worth checking that field if you are in the area.

Earlier a flock of at least 16 Evening Grosbeaks visited the feeders for 15
mins or so, sometimes also joining a flock of at least twice that many Cedar
Waxwings to feed on buckthorn berries in a tree just beyond my feeders.

That's cheered up my mood on this rainy day considerably!!

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Rd Eastern Meadowlarks

2018-11-02 Thread Marie P. Read
I saw a flock of 7 Eastern Meadowlarks flying and landing in one of the fields
on the north side of Mt Pleasant Rd (east end) on my walk earlier this morning.
Later, a flock of 30-ish of what I'm going to call Horned Larks based on their
calls.

And one female Evening Grosbeak was around the ash tree and under my feeder for
a while 8:30 or so.

Several of the Mt Pleasant fields were left unplanted this past summer and
there are lots of weeds. That's a good sign for later this winter when the snow
flies...weed seeds form an important food for Snow Buntings, pipits, longspurs
and other field birds.

Sanity maintained!

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Horned Lark song-flight

2018-05-06 Thread Marie P. Read
At the end of my morning walk, I was happy to hear, and eventually, see a
Horned Lark performing its flight display high in the sky. Usually I have seen
them doing this much earlier in the year, even in early March if it's mild.
They are known to start nesting very early, so maybe this year I have missed
the displays. But my inner pessimist wonders whether the display is happening
now because last year's corn field at the crest of the hill was just plowed.
This would have destroyed an early nest and stimulated the male to get
territorial again. He DID land in the plowed field at the end of the flight
display.
Did the group up there yesterday see/hear any Horned Larks singing?

A number of Bobolink males are also putting on a show in several of the fields,
but no females yet.

Enjoy the spring!

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Barred Owl!

2017-04-28 Thread Marie P. Read
Just back from a walk up Mt Pleasant Road, during which the big surprise was a
Barred Owl heard calling from the woods north of the ex-sheep barns between the
two hills. First time I've ever heard one up here (although they surely have
been present in the past). As I continued, I was musing that I hadn't yet heard
a Ruffed Grouse drumming here this spring, and as if on cue one started
drumming from the woods on the south side of the road!

Another heard-bird was my first Baltimore Oriole in the Cornell Arboretum
earlier this morning. Another birder I met mentioned that he'd also heard one
near the Mundy Wildflower Garden.

SPRING!

As others have noted, lotsa geese going over right now (and have been all

Also on Mt Pleasant:

Killdeer
Horned Lark (one singing briefly plus a flock of about 25 flying around)
Red-winged Blackbird

Another Red-winged Blackbird is already noisily claiming part of the beaver
marsh behind my property.
And a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers has been enjoying the suet for a couple of
weeks. (The female's been around all winter)

Sounds a bit like spring out there.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant migrating Blue Jays - an acorn crop question

2016-09-30 Thread Donna Scott
Very few acorns in the red oak trees in my area. It seems to be an off year for
nut mass.

RE:[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant migrating Blue Jays - an acorn crop question

2016-09-30 Thread Marie P. Read
I followed the Blue Jay flock through my binocs as they flew off, they landed
in the distance several times , in oaks as far as I could tell, but didn't
stick around. Has anyone noticed whether the acorn crop is good this year in
the region? I have not seen very many acorns on my trips to the Cornell
Arboretum. Last year there were masses of acorns there and the resident Blue
Jays were harvesting them and flying off to store them for weeks.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Horned Larks etc

2016-02-19 Thread Marie P. Read
Hi all,

The corn stubble field just west of the radio tower on Mt Pleasant Rd had a
flock of 30-ish Horned Larks foraging among numerous pigeons, crows, and Canada
Geese this morning, around 10:15. And closer to the observatory, six Snow
Buntings were foraging along the roadside.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Horned Lark singing

2016-02-02 Thread Marie P. Read
The plaintive voice of a singing Horned Lark wafted my way from somewhere in a
corn stubble field at the eastern end of Mt Pleasant Rd, bringing delight to an
otherwise pretty bird-free walk this afternoon. Did see a Red-tailed Hawk
circling above, but little else.

I DID forget to post, though, that I saw my first Rough-legged Hawk of the
"winter", flying over Rt 13 near the Ithaca airport last Saturday morning.

An odd season...

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Buntings!

2016-01-05 Thread Marie P. Read
I just spent the last 15-20 minutes watching and trying to count a flock of
Snow Buntings feeding in some green-ish weeds at the junction of Mt Pleasant
and Mineah Rd. I estimate there were about 60. Eventually they all took off
flying high to the south, but when I rounded the corner on my way home at least
part of the flock was swirling round the corn stubble field opposite my house,
a place I've never seen them before. Since I could see them from my front
porch, Snow Bunting is now officially on my yard list!

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Buntings!

2016-01-04 Thread Marie P. Read
Well, just in the nick of time for CBC Count Week, I saw a flock of around 20
Snow Buntings just west of the observatory on Mt Pleasant Rd (south side of the
road) as I drove by there around 3:55 pm today. Lots of white on the wings was
distinctive.
Earlier there was a large flock of Horned Larks close to the road at the
eastern end of Mt Pleasant Rd, as well as the regular flock of juncos in the
dip between hills where the farm is.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Horned Larks

2015-12-31 Thread Lauren DeGennaro
12/31 - Just went to go see the Horned Larks. Saw about 25+ flitting
between the fields on both sides of the road, near the end of Mt. Pleasant
(at the junction to Mineah Road). Nice views of the ones that landed on the
road near the car!

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Horned Larks

2015-12-31 Thread Marie P. Read
Hi all,

The local flock of Horned Larks is currently visible in the corn-stubble field
on the south side of Mt Pleasant Road (east end). I estimated around 20 earlier
this morning, but I know there are more. Thinking of tomorrows' bird count, I
wonder if "a bunch" would be a valid number?? ;-)

Have fun and good counting tomorrow!
Happy New Year to all.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant birds etc

2015-12-24 Thread Marie P. Read
On my pre-feast walk on Mt Pleasant Road, few bird species, but a cool
observation (or 2).

I'd noticed a Red-tailed Hawk flying at one point. Later on my way back, I
heard a brief Red-tailed Hawk-like call from the woods on my right. My
interpretation was Blue Jay, and wondered what motivated its mimickery. I stood
looking all around for the earlier hawk, but it wasn't immediately visible. I
carried on walking and suddenly there was the hawk circling far over in the
opposite direction from where I'd heard the call. Those jays are so smart!

The other observation: 2 Spring Peepers calling from the swamp behind my house.
Not sure how I feel about that...:-(At least the forecast for January 1st
is more more seasonable temperatures (ie COLD)

Anyway, Happy Holidays to all!

Along with enjoying the Cinnamon Teal (which, by the way, seemed to have
distinct speckles on it's side, and chevron-feather markings fore and aft -
i.e. definitely a hybrid?), and a count of 68 Sandhills from East Rd., we
saw a lone Snow Bunting at Tschache, right in the grassy tracks before the gate.

1 Horned Lark
None of Those White Birds from a few days

On the way back, a Common Raven was on the road near a large flock of
American Crows checking out the newly harvested corn field. The raven took of

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Ruffed Grouse drumming

2015-10-11 Thread Marie P. Read
Hi all,

Yesterday afternoon around 4:15, I was stopped in my tracks while toiling up
the hill by the sound of a Ruffed Grouse drumming from the woods along the
road, in the stretch between the two dirt roads at the eastern end of Mt
Pleasant Road.
Also a largish flock of American Pipits is still pipiting their way over and in
the fields near the radio tower.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant; T. of Dryden; Tomp. Co.

2015-10-07 Thread Susan Fast
I was looking for migrants on Mt. Pleasant from 1145 till  1345 today.  A
little slow, but a flock of 60 AMER. PIPITS flew over low.  About 1300, I spied
2 large, dark birds way to the east.  Both in the same field of view briefly.
I picked one to follow with the scope and determined, mostly by its slight
dihedral, that it was a GOLDEN EAGLE (somewhat early).  I did not refind the
other, but I'm sure it was an EAGLE also, species undetermined.  Seemed like a
good day for TURKEY VULTURES, but I saw only 8.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant American Pipits, other birds, and beer cans!

2015-09-25 Thread Marie P. Read
The newly-scoured fields and roadsides along the east end of Mt Pleasant Rd may
be an eyesore until something grows, but they offered some good bird sightings
this morning.

A couple of dozen American Pipits were feeding there, as were huge numbers of
Killdeer which flew up in a large flock (50-80 I estimate) when an American
Kestrel and a small accipiter were swooping around after each other overhead.
There may be many more pipits. Earlier I watched a male Northern Harrier
swooping over the fields, and a large accipiter, possible a Cooper's Hawk, flew
past at one point. Below the observatory, I noticed a few Eastern Bluebirds in
a tree swooping down repeatedly after prey, then as I watched 19 bluebirds took
off from the tree heading east! A couple of Turkey Vultures soared overhead. A
couple of days ago a flock of Rock Pigeons was fleeing ahead of a Merlin over
the same fields.

And along the roadside I picked up 17 Bud Light/Red Dog cans, newly tossed
since yesterday. Oddly, they were neatly spaced about 50 yards apart all along
Mt Pleasant Rd, implying that someone drove along tossing out a can every few
seconds. What jerks some people are! But if you don't want your deposit, I DO!
Gotta make a living somehow... ;-))

[cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant migrants

2015-09-10 Thread Gladys Birdsall
This afternoon I was in the right place at the right time, thanks to
noisy Chickadees who cued me in to all the other activity going on. Just
before 5 pm, after walking the dogs in our woods, I spent about 40-45
minutes watching and trying to identify quite a group of migrants
feeding and moving through the area right below our home. I stood in the
open area where our firewood is stacked while birds flitted all around
feeding high and low.

There were many warblers and quite a few I was not able to identify,
with their zipping around and still lots of leaves on the trees and
bushes, some were very high in the trees. These are the ones I did get
good looks at and were quite low, a real treat.

Common Yellowthroat (several)
Ovenbird
Black-throated Blue female
Black-throated Green
American Redstart
Magnolia
Nashville
Yellow-rumped
Blackburnian
Wilson's

Others seen:
Rose-breasted Grosbeaks 4 (feeding together in the same tree)
Blue-Headed Vireos 2
Catbird
White-breasted Nuthatch
Ceder Waxwings
Tufted Titmouse
Eastern Phoebe
Warbling Vireo

It was pretty magical.
Two days ago I watched a beautiful Canada Warbler in the Oak tree off
our back deck.

Good birding,
Gladys

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Osprey pair

2015-08-03 Thread Marie P. Read
Just back from an amazing trip to the Pribilof Islands, Alaska, I was taking my
first walk up Mt Pleasant Rd to see what was around. In the distance I thought
I heard an Osprey calling...surely not? But indeed there was one circling above
the shorter of the two communications towers, calling constantly. And then a
second one flew out of the crown of whatever-those-things-are encircling the
top of the taller tower. I wondered if this might be the next place Ospreys set
up shop in our region.
Later on I saw the two Osprey lower down, one of them still circling and
calling, the other just cruising along. One had several primaries in each wing
missing, while the other had ratty-looking tail feathers, with some missing. I
lost them as they flew and circled slowly to the south-east. Maybe just
beginning their migration southward?

Surprising birds for up here on the mountain.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Osprey pair

2015-08-03 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
I did not mean these were breeding Ospreys. I meant they could stop by at one
of these ponds to feed. They could be East Hill Ospreys.

On the other notes, in last week I have seen Osprey hunting in the Beebe lake
twice.

Today on the walk, I found an adult Chipping Sparrow moving just two steps
ahead in front me as I walked the stairs. It would just climb a step and wait
for me to catch up and climb the next step. So I was wondering why is it no
afraid of me. Then I realized I have been hearing babies calling nearby. So
actually he was trying to get my attention away from his begging babies!

Cheers

Welcome back, Marie. I hope you had a successful and delightful trip.

I wanted to double check—you did not see any traces of a nest, just the pair of
ospreys circling the communications tower. Correct?

If so, they could be young, newly mated birds that are just shy of full
reproductive maturity and scouting the area for future nesting places. However,
their molting condition does not suggest young birds. My guess is they are a
mature mated pair who lost their nest due to the weather or another reason and
are checking out future nesting places. There are closer sites to the lake, but
ospreys have their own individual tastes.

Collectively, I doubt the small ponds around Mt. Pleasant have large enough
fish in adequate numbers to sustain an osprey family for more than a few weeks,
unless they are still annually stocking the bass ponds that used to be up there.

Ospreys have waves of molts and usually have only one or so missing feathers
per wing at a time so they are always in top flying condition and prepared to
fish. It's hard to guess their molt stage (and age) without seeing the feathers
myself.

All ospreys migrate individually, juveniles too!, so I doubt they were en route
south. Females usually migrate in mid-august and the males wait with the
youngsters as they learn to fish. The juvies usually leave in Sept when they
are each ready and travel alone although some take until October to learn their
tricks.

Thanks for the sighting.

Eyes to the sky!

Later on I saw the two Osprey lower down, one of them still circling and

lost them as they flew and circled slowly to the south-east. Maybe just
beginning their migration southward?

Surprising birds for up here on the mountain.

As I crested the easternmost hill on Mt Pleasant Rd on my afternoon walk
(around 4pm today) a spectacular male Northern Harrier, tilting and swooping
its way across the fields, had just sent up a crowd of Bobolinks

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant pm Horned Lark display flight

2015-05-16 Thread Marie P. Read
On my afternoon walk up Mt Pleasant Rd (east end) around 4pm today I heard a
singing Horned Lark and located it fluttering and hovering high in the sky. I'm
no expert at judging heights, but it had to have been 100 feet up or more.
After several minutes alternately fluttering and gliding up there in the wind,
it folded its wings and plummeted to earth, landing just a short distance from
me in a plowed field at the top of the hill (close to the yellow steep hill
sign). Amazingly, it did a repeat performance when I was on my way back.

Wonderful to watch...

Hi all,

A chilly walk up Mt Pleasant Rd around 3:30 pm turned up a Wilson's Snipe
foraging in a muddy puddle just into one of the fields at the east end of the

American Robins

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant this Noon

2015-03-19 Thread bob mcguire
A pleasant noon-hour by the observatory. Bright sun and no wind. I was there
from 11:45 til 1:15, and it was basically a slow time. One migrating Northern
Harrier and several local TV’s, Red-tails, and Rough-leggeds. Thousands of
distant Canada and Snow Geese, mainly to the west. A couple of Horned Larks and
Killdeer calling and a fly-over Pipit.

I was trying to decide how much longer to stay when a distant speck
materialized into the bird-of-the-day: GOLDEN EAGLE. I was able to observe it
for almost ten minutes as it worked its way north and passed almost straight
overhead. Never once in the entire time did it flap its wings! Just one, long
soar/glide.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant

2015-03-16 Thread Susan Fast
Just came down from the hill.  Had to leave at Noon.  Not much happening,
although the wind was in my face when I was looking south.   Hundreds of
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, several very small flocks of CANADA GEESE,  no raptors,
5 RAVENS gamboling, partnering up, then switching off.  2 BALD EAGLES, with a
troubling observation.  The first was spied far to the east, ID first as eagle
then noticed a significant dihedral to the wings as it soared.  I marked it
down as a golden eagle, and continued to watch for some minutes until it got
close enough (at 60x) that the all-white head and tail were unmistakable.  At
no time did I see the characteristic flatness of the wings that a bald eagle is
supposed to show.  The second bald eagle conformed nicely to expectations,
however.  Maybe this afternoon?

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Buntings, Horned Larks

2015-01-29 Thread Marie P. Read
The roadsides along Mt Pleasant Rd have been plowed far back exposing some bare
ground and these opened up areas have attracted a lot of Snow Buntings and
Horned Larks (more of the latter than I've seen together all winter up here) to
feed today. Given these close views, it is worth checking the flocks for
longspurs, before the snow drifts over to cover up the bare ground again. (I
didn't see any though...)

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Rough-legged Hawk, Snow Buntings

2014-12-11 Thread Marie P. Read
Hi all,

On my walk up Mt Pleasant Road around 3:00 this afternoon, I saw the following:

Rough-legged Hawk, the first of the season, flying near the observatory. At one
point it landed on the snowy ground, scaring up a flock of 11 Snow Buntings.
Later I watched as the hawk swooped along low to the ground and then snatched
up a small, dark creature, presumably some rodent.

Since mid-morning, there have been impressive numbers of Canada Geese and
American Crows in the recently mowed (post harvesting) corn fields at the east
end of Mt Pleasant Rd, likely because the strong winds of the last few days
have prevented deep snow build-up, so there is bare ground with corn cobs or
other potential foods visible. In one patch I saw 6 Horned Larks. Also a Downy
Woodpecker on the ground checking out corn cobs and stems.

to turn them into Snow Buntings but did not succeed, telling myself that a
flock of larks that big was just as cool ;-))

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant American Pipit, Pileated Woodpecker

2014-11-16 Thread Marie P. Read
Hi everyone,

I took TWO separate exercise walks on Mt Pleasant today (too antsy, I think…).

This morning around 10;30 I got my best-ever look at an American Pipit in the
east, when one was bob-bob-bobbing along the middle of the road and didn't seem
to want to flush, giving me great looks at its white outer tail feathers and
other plumage niceties.
Then this afternoon around 4:15, I was alerted by the tuk-tuk-tuk calls of a
Pileated Woodpecker. When I located it, I watched it eating wild grapes until
it flew.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Pipits, Ruffed Grouse

2014-10-25 Thread Marie P. Read
It's nice to be back on the mountain after a month's book tour in oh-so-dry
California.
This evening's walk on Mt Pleasant Road netted a drumming Ruffed Grouse in the
woods east of the Cornell farm. And yesterday afternoon two small flocks of
American Pipits, one opposite the observatory, the other over a field at the
east end of Mt Pleasant Rd.

[cayugabirds-l] MT Pleasant Bobolink Common Ravens

2014-08-24 Thread Marie P. Read
Around 10 this morning (Sunday) I was walking past the field just east of the
observatory, where the recently mowed grass was being turned by a tractor.
Overhead 3 Common Ravens were wheeling, giving lots of calls, checking out the
newly mowed areas for dead (or soon to be dead) things exposed by the mower…a
bit gruesome to think about but they are scavengers after all. One of the 3
carried off a beakful of who-knows-what back into the nearby woods…maybe to
consume at leisure? Or maybe a juvenile was waiting there?

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Bobolink flock this am

2014-08-22 Thread Marie P. Read
Around 9:30 am Friday I found yet another large Bobolink flock in the
switchgrass field opposite and east (downhill) of the observatory on Mt
Pleasant Rd. I'm estimating about 60 birds. I say another because I have not
noticed any in that field for at least a week, when there was a big flock there.

Other birds of note:
Eastern Blue birds 2 adults and 2 fledglings.

A total of five American Kestrels on the wires along the radio tower road. At
first there two other birds marauding as kestrels on the wires too, but they
didn't look quite right. So when I took a binocular look I realized both were
Northern Flickers, perching just like kestrels. Shortly, a real kestrel flew in
chased by a crow. The first flicker disappeared immediately, I know not where.
The kestrel strafed the second flicker, which gave an unbelievably loud shriek,
dropped off the wire and flew rapidly back to the woods to safety!

And that's the news from Mt Pleasant…my home town

[cayugabirds-l] MT Pleasant Bobolink flock

2014-08-10 Thread Marie P. Read
Around 4pm Saturday I managed a rough count of the Bobolink flock on Mt
Pleasant Rd - 97! The birds were again in the switchgrass field just west of
the dirt road (called Pine Woods Rd on some old maps) to the farm between the
two hills at the eastern end of Mt Pleasant Rd. The Bobolinks are usually not
visible in the tall grass but their occasional calls give them away and once in
a while they do fly up.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Bobolink flock NOW

2014-08-10 Thread Marie P. Read
As of about 9:30 am Sunday, there were a number of Bobolinks near the road just
at the junction of Mt Pleasant Rd and dirt road between the hills (PIne Woods
Road). They are preening and resting in the switchgrass, a few on the wires
overhead, and in the roadside shrubbery. Straggling groups taking off south.
Nice to see them closer up. One individual making scratchy attempts at a
jangling song. I counted 57, lots more hiding I'm sure.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant kestrels etc

2014-08-05 Thread Marie P. Read
The annual build up of American Kestrels has begun on Mt Pleasant: there were 7
on the wires on the dirt road to the radio tower and an 8th by the observatory.
I presume this represents one or more families.
Also a couple of bobolinks binking in flight over the fields.
