This morning while leading the beginner bird walk at Sapsucker Woods, we
saw an Olive-sided Flycatcher on a snag out in the pond. We watched it from
the Wilson trail along the north side of the pond. It later moved to

[cayugabirds-l] Olive-sided Flycatcher(s), Dryden

2016-08-16 Thread Jay McGowan
This morning Livia and I walked around the Park Preserve South and the
beginning of Hammond Hill Road in Dryden. Warblers were generally scarce.
The only bird of note at Park was a juvenile MOURNING WARBLER where the
trail rises to the left over the creek area. On the way up Irish Settlement
towards Hammond, I pulled over at the marshy area just north of Park
Preserve North to check out a suspicious silhouette. Sure enough, an
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was preening at the top of a snag on the west side
of the road. Shortly thereafter we were at the beaver dam swamp at the
beginning of Hammond Hill Road and found another OLIVE-SIDED, or possibly
the same one following us, in the snags on the left side as you come in
from Irish Settlement. We eventually had a nice warbler flock at this spot
as well, with Canada, Blackburnian, Chestnut-sided, Magnolia,
Black-throated Blue, and Black-throated Green.

Yesterday morning I also had a bright YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER briefly at
the Sherwood Platform here at Sapsucker Woods. I was not able to find it
later in the day.

Hi all,
This morning, Livia and I found an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER at the Durland
Preserve in Ellis Hollow. It was flycatching off a dead snag very distantly
to the south of the Hirshfeld Platform. We waited for half an hour or so
after it disappeared but it never reappeared in the closer snags as we had
hoped. Nothing else particularly noteworthy at the preserve, but lots of
activity as usual.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Olive-sided Flycatcher, Sapsucker Woods

2011-08-24 Thread Jay McGowan
I refound the Olive-sided from the staff lounge and watched it foraging from
one of the small snags in the distant treeline for a few minutes before it
disappeared into the woods about 10 minutes ago, but it is undoubtedly still
in the area if anyone cares to devote a little time to scanning.

Just got a quick look at an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER on one of the distant

[cayugabirds-l] OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER - Chemung Co., Horseheads

2011-05-29 Thread Mike Powers
My morning bird walk around the yard was producing mostly the usual
suspects for this time of year, but that was broken by a very nice
surprise in the form of a FOY and new yard bird: an OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER. I first located it by it's song, then watched it for a few
minutes as it called regularly and then disappeared to the north.

A great start to a beautiful day!

Good birding,
Mike

[cayugabirds-l] Olive-sided Flycatcher?

2010-08-11 Thread Nancy W Dickinson
This evening, walking our puppy at about 7:30 in hazy dusk, I saw a bird that
I believe was an Olive-sided Flycatcher. Dark, not small, short-necked, medium
unmoving tail, large white wing-patch the only distinguishing mark, sitting
very still (100 feet away? with binocs) on a roadside snag for a minute until
it sallied a few feet, a few times, then went away. I came in and looked in
the old Peterson where I write such things, and saw that my first and only yard
sighting of this (but not my only sighting ever) was on 8/27/97. So I'm
thinking it might not be too early, considering how this year has been? I am
pretty sure. Sure it was cool.

So many interesting things coming around. Keep your eyes and ears open!
