[cayugabirds-l] Owling Trip

2017-03-27 Thread bob mcguire
We had an interesting experience last night. John Confer led an “owing trip”
for the CBC. Our first stop was Wood Road north where it is broken by a stream
crossing. John tried unsuccessfully for saw-whet, screech, and then great
horned owls - we have had some of them at that location in past years. As is
got dark, Suan pulled out his infared camera and began scanning the woods for
“warm bodies”. What he picked up was amazing! A RUFFED GROUSE perched high in a
tree (probably poplar - probably feeding on the new buds or the catkins). We
then listened to several woodcocks penning and then follow one of them (on the
camera screen) as it took of, flew its loops, then settled to the ground again.
What an asset that camera is for night-time birding!

The only owl we were able to find was a saw-whet that gave a short response
call to playback at the bottom of Star Stanton Road.

[cayugabirds-l] Owling trip tomorrow by CBC

2015-11-06 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,

This is Cayuga bird Club trip announcements. Members of the public are also
invited to attend this trip.

Details are as follow:

The Owling field trip on November 7 will be led by Wes Blauvelt and Meena
Haribal. Participants should meet at the Lab of Ornithology parking lot at
6:30 pm. Wes and Meena will then lead the group to various locations to look
for owls, including Great Horned, Barred, Eastern Screech and Saw-whet Owls.
Included in this trip will be a stop at John Confer's Hammond Hill Owl Site
(HHOWLS) to see how Northern Saw-whet Owls are banded. If we are lucky, we
might get one close enough to see in hand. Participants should bring a headlamp
or flashlight and dress warmly, with gloves and hats, for standing in the cold
listening for owls. This trip will be canceled if it is raining. We will return
to the Lab of O at approximately 10:30 pm.
