[cayugabirds-l] Robins and DE Juncos

2022-03-08 Thread Sandy Wold
I heard robins and DE Juncos calling for the first time this year,
yesterday, March 7. I've seen the DE Juncos all winter, but yesterday they
started their "mating" purring-trill.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Robins

2021-02-10 Thread Todd Beeton
Same here. Quite surprised to see so many robins here (in Geneva) with so
much winter left yet to come. Although I noticed what drew them: my
neighbor has a berry tree that they are gorging on. Fun to watch them take
the berries up to the roof of my garage and feast, then wash it down with
water from the rain gutter.

It has also attracted a flock of starlings, who are also trying -- and
mostly failing -- to eat from my feeder.

Sadly I've only seen one cardinal in my yard all winter. I've bought some
new feed meant to attract them, so hopefully they will make my yard home as
well.

[cayugabirds-l] Robins and salamanders

2018-06-04 Thread Laura Stenzler
We have a American robin nest above the door to our deck where we can get a
great view of all of the activity. The adults are feeding four young which
hatched about a week ago. Before flying to the nest they often land on the deck
railing to check us out before deciding it is safe to fly to the nest. This
affords a good opportunity to see what they are carrying. This afternoon I was
surprised to see a whole, young salamander in with the worms in the adults
beak! The entire load was fed to one hungry chick. Yesterday we found a dried
carcass of a small salamander under the nest on the floor of the deck.
According to the “AllAboutBirds.org” website, robins “have rarely been recorded
eating shrews, small snakes, and aquatic insects.” Maybe it’s not as rare as
previously thought.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Robins

2017-02-06 Thread AB Clark
I had over 1000 robins fly over Hanshaw Rd S of intersection with W Dryden Rd
on 15 Jan. There were flocks of about 200 or more in my field that same day,
about the same time. Since then I have been routinely seeing 100-200 moving
near dusk, in Freeville area…last weekend on Palmear Rd.

The large numbers at this time seem unusual, particularly since there are
females as well as males present.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Robins

2017-02-06 Thread Marc Devokaitis
Hi Carol, all-

Over the past decade +, America Robins have been spotted in all states
except Hawaii in all months of the year. Rather than a strict north/south
movement, Turdus migratorius lives up to its scientific name (migratorius =
wandering) and tends to winter where there is abundant fruit or soft soil.
See https://www.allaboutbirds.org/is-it-unusual-to-see-
american-robins-in-the-middle-of-winter/. and Birds of North America
online, American Robin > Distribution, Migration and Habitat (
https://birdsna.org/Species-Account/bna/species/amerob/distribution)

I used the Line Graph feature of eBird to plot winter occurrence of
American Robin in Tompkins County starting in 2013. Although the Feb. data
for 2017 is obviously incomplete, we can see a definite trend of increased
frequency of AMRO's occurring on checklists over the past few seasons.
2015 is the exception; and you may recall that was the only recent winter
of extreme cold temps and above average snowfall. Note the spike in mid-Feb
occurrence in 2014 and 2016, another trend that seems poised to continue
this year. But this is a very condensed slice of data; winters that are
warmer with less snowfall will mean we see more robins.

http://ebird.org/ebird/GuideMe?src=changeDate=amerob;
getLocations=counties=US-NY-109=US-NY=
species=on=12=02=2013=2017=
separateYears=16=1=Continue

Looking further back in eBird data, and/or looking at Tompkins County CBC
data could serve to illustrate more concrete trends for this region.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Robins

2017-02-05 Thread Gladys Birdsall
Yesterday morning, Jan. 4th, I was out walking the dogs, up here on Mt.
Pleasant and there was a lot of activity with Robins. Hard to count but maybe
25-30, all around the house and out the driveway. They were after Hawthorn
berries. There are also wet areas in the woods. I know there are wild grapes
around too. It was 12 degrees F when I got up and about 10 AM it was still
only 14 degrees F.

Today I see there are Robins around down the road, west of our driveway. The
past 3 days we have had a good amount of snowfall, dry fluffy snow, a good
ground covering, so it was a surprise, but fun to see the Robins.

[cayugabirds-l] Robins

2017-01-19 Thread bob mcguire
I just stepped outside to the chittering sound of American Robins - a huge
flock of some 200+ birds! They are feeding on multiflora rose and buckthorn
berries. I always thought that buckthorn was the fruit of last resort, passed
over by our winter birds and available for the early spring arrivals (like
robins!).

Anyway, for all those who used to think that robins all went south in the fall
and who eagerly awaited their return in the spring - no more!!

With the robins is a lone Cedar Waxwing. (And no grosbeaks.)

[cayugabirds-l] Robins

2016-03-21 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,

This morning is the first time my Robin has been singing since dawn. He knew it
is spring! He has been hanging around and often chukchuking last few days.

Yesterday I was at Sapsucker Woods. There were three robins - two males and one
female. One male was in attendance with the female followed her where ever she
went. I also think she was building a nest as I her beak was very muddy. That
is she was in mud patching stage of nest building. The other male sat in a
shadow of a branch at mid height as if hiding but was singing a mostly high
pitched vocalizations. He was brighter male with very dark reddish breast and
beautiful. I think he was trying to get the attention of the female who was
already engaged to the other male. I watched them for sometime. The second
sneaky male was really trying to get the female's attention by flying in
awkward places and signing. May be he was a young male still unattached, while
the other male was her older partner of some years. But it was fun watching
the second male's behavior.

On Thursday I watched a Mourning Dove carry nesting materials of large dry
leaves into cedars near flat rock.

Cheers

Meena

[cayugabirds-l] Robins routinely reuse nests? Invitation to find out!

2015-07-09 Thread Anne Clark

To all members of Cayugabirds list,

There was a lively recent discussion on the Cayugabirds-L eList about whether
American Robins routinely reuse their nests. Some reported seeing reuse, a few
others reported otherwise. The question is more complex and important than it
seems at first glance; certainly not many cup-nesting species do so. There has
been at least one paper published on nest reuse in European Blackbirds, a close
cousin (Wysocki 2004. Nest re-use by blackbirds—The way for safe nesting? Acta
Ornithologica, 39(2):164-168.)

With permission of the List Owner, we--Marie Read and Anne Clark-- thought it
would be interesting to gather your observations of robin nesting and clarify
the patterns of reuse in our local robins, in order to understand when and why
robins might reuse nests or nest sites. So we have developed a survey about
the details of any robin nests and renests you have observed this year, with or
without reuse of an old nest or site. We hope you will be interested in
filling it out and sending in your data, so we can summarize your reports and
look for interesting patterns. The resulting summary will be posted to the
eList for everyone's enjoyment.

If you are interested in participating, please send an off-list message to BOTH
Marie Read ( mpr5 at cornell.edu) and Anne Clark (anneb.clark at gmail.com).
It is important to send to both, since both have some away times, when the
other will answer. Then we will send you the survey in the body of a reply
email, with full instructions. Remember--we are interested in ANY observed
robin nesting, with and without the reuse of a previously constructed nest.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Marie and Anne

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Robins and cedar waxings

2014-03-08 Thread Naomi Brewer
Many years ago while visiting my uncle in Bonita Springs, Florida - about
this time of year - Robins were eating some black berries. The bushes were
along the yard and as I watched the Robins some of them would flop to the
ground, try to get up, stager and eventually be able to hop off or fly. They
were drunk from those berries.

[cayugabirds-l] Robins

2014-02-27 Thread Janet Akin
I do Wednesday night Raptor Survey at Montezuma. We have been seeing large
numbers of robins the last few weeks. Last week from my survey spot on Morgan
Rd. I counted over 200 going to roost. At my home in Ontario County I have had
about 30 in my hedgerow and bird feeding garden all winter. They are still
feasting on Mountain Ash berries and Winterberry in my garden. Janet Akin

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Robins

2014-02-27 Thread Dave Nutter
In early January there were scores of American Robins along Lake Road near Long Point State Park in the Town of Ledyard. They eat the cedar berries. I've seen groups of Robins in such fruited woodsy areas all winter, but it does seem that recently there have been more of them in other places, flying about, and on exposed lawns. I wonder how many are the local winter woods birds fanning out and how many are an early spring influx.--Dave Nutter

RE:[cayugabirds-l] Robins

2014-02-26 Thread Marie P. Read
Lots of robins about…I just haven't posted about it! Scores of them feeding on
the still-fruit-laden the crabapples in the Cornell Plantations, lots of them
singing. Scores also on bare grass patches in a backyard along Mt Pleasant Road
(around Baker Hill area).
Would people agree there's been a big influx? Or have they all just been hiding
somewhere…my take is that a lot of robins that have been hanging out south of
here have started to filter north again.

[cayugabirds-l] Robins and Juncos

2013-11-02 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,

I just looked out of my computer room window into the yard as I saw a robin. On
looking out I found 18 Am. Robins feeding on the ground. May be warm rain
brought the earthworms to the surface. So I watched them for sometime after I
typed this. But I don't see them picking up earthworms, but they are picking
some things and feeding.

Two Dark-eyed Juncos are feeding on grass seeds, but often squabbling and
flashing their white tail feathers. So it is not for the insects they are
flairing their tails.

Whole morning I have been sitting and working with Xeno-Canto as a preparation
to my upcoming Bolivia trip and listening to my two year old Peru recordings.
Yesterday I had uploaded a clip as unknown. Dan Lane identified 9 species of
birds in a recording of 1.2 minutes. Birds included Rufous-vented Tapaculo,
dueting Grey-breasted Wood-wren, two species of Myiothlypis warblers, a
Flowerpiercer, a Woodcreeper and a tanager. So I am drooling over thinking what
I will be seeing in Bolivia.

Just now I looked at one of my unidentified cuts, that contained Black-faced
Antthursh, White-throated Toucan, Cinereous Tinamou, and now I see eight other
species of birds which as of now I cant identify, but at least two of them seem
identifiable and familiar. On two of the Black-faced Antthrush notes exactly
over lapping are two other different species of birds! It is fun playing with
spectrograms in Adobe Audition where you can see the different birds clearly!

Happy birding and listening folks!

[cayugabirds-l] Robins and Waxwings and OT info on NM or ICELAND

2011-11-06 Thread Meena Haribal
Hi all,
Since yesterday, my yard is invaded by robins and waxwings and along with them
there are some juncos too. There is a hawthorn bush in front of my bedroom
window under the spruces, whose fruits are being relished by these birds. Some
of the fruits seem too far away from them if they are sitting on the branch, so
they are using lounging technique to nab the fruits. In the sun light their
shadow looks like falling leaves from the neighboring Norway maple. There are
as many as 20+ robins and 15 or so waxwings. Occasionally, the local black cat
seems to terrorize them by just being around. I also noticed based on her foot
prints, this cat seem to be practicing “catwalk” on a 10 feet long 4 inch white
plastic pipe in the yard. To me this looked quite hilarious.

Now a OT request – I have not decided yet, but I am toying between the idea of
Iceland or New Mexico and AZ during Christmas vacation. Iceland would be for
wintering birds and Aurora Borealis as there is only two hours of daylight in a
day. I know many of you would think that is a crazy idea, but Iceland is warmer
than Ithaca in that season. I would love to hear if anyone has any advice as to
where to go. Also, if anyone else is interested joining me send me an –email
directly to m...@cornell.edumailto:m...@cornell.edu

Thanks in advance.

[cayugabirds-l] robins

2011-02-26 Thread Sara Jane Hymes
On a walk up Eastern Heights Rec Way this morning I also spotted
Robins--a flock of between 25-30. They were sitting quite still
munching on left-over black fruit, and appearing as still as the
half-dozen Cedar Waxwings which were also there.

Last week I spotted about 50 Robins on the East Hill Rec Way.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] ROBINS

2010-01-06 Thread Tom Vawter
I noticed robins, not in large flocks but a few, around our place in
Lansing. They hadn't been in evidence for most of the winter so far. The
birds I saw were foraging in the few areas of open ground--mostly under
parked cars--free from the recent snow cover. My guess was that the recent
snows had covered foraging areas they'd been using most of the mostly
snow-free winter, but that the snow and colder weather had forced them to
congregate in suitable areas. Winter roosting aggregations is an
interesting question.

en masse, they will be warmer. A response to the North Atlantic
 Oscillation??

miles south of the Triangle Diner, where I ran out of birds. I didn’t

might be going to some preselected roost (following them was not an option
