I had a very cool yard bird sighting today! I was coming back from my trail cam spot when I saw an unusual bird fly past. I wasn’t carrying binoculars, but I could tell that it was a Red-headed Woodpecker without needing them. Solid red head, huge white patch as it flew away. I saw it perched too. We have a lot of dead trees on our forested land, so it makes sense. I grew up in the south where this bird is very common, but I have never seen one in Lansing NY.
Sadly, didn’t get a photo and couldn’t relocate it after a search. Last night we were treated to a Great-Horned Owl hooting away, too. Another fun surprise. The birds are really active right now.
