Yesterday afternoon, Ann Mitchell, Gary Kohlenberg & I went to Dryden Lake 
seeking the RED-NECKED GREBES which Jay reported. The grebes were together in 
the middle of the lake, mostly sleeping, but they did wake up, and preen a bit. 
They are distinctive enough to ID even when asleep, though, by their large size 
and typical grebe sleeping posture with the head resting on the middle of the 
back. My guess is that with north winds continuing, these birds may remain 
awhile. 

The only other waterfowl were an expected raft of CANADA GEESE, about 40 
scattered COMMON MERGANSERS, and one each of male HOODED MERGANSER and male 
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER. The last species may be uncommon on Dryden Lake. I also 
glimpsed an adult BALD EAGLE, which I gather is not unusual there in recent 
years. Anyway the lake was ice-free and open for business, and worth checking 
during migration if you are in the area. The distance and waves there don’t 
hide waterbirds so much as on Cayuga Lake.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-necked Grebes, Dyden Lake

Two nonbreeding plumage RED-NECKED GREBES are currently sleeping in the
middle of Dryden Lake. Not much else aside from numerous Common Mergansers.

The compost was active earlier, with at least five Iceland Gulls, three
Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and a Great Black-backed x Herring hybrid. Last
night at Stewart Park we had at least eight Lesser, five Iceland, and a
Lesser Black-backed x Herring hybrid.

I was visiting a friend's house just north of Dean's Cove about 2:30 this misty 
afternoon, enjoying the hundreds of swallows circling just inches above the 
water. The cove stream spilled out a plume of silt-laden rainwater that 
stretched north toward us along the shore. Out beyond it, Loons were diving 
here and there, and popping up anywhere else.

Then a group of six (!) Red-necked Grebes in various stages of breeding plumage 
appeared. They were close, only 50' - 100' from shore, fishing and paddling 
their unhurried way north. Really splendid afternoon!

[cayugabirds-l] Red-necked Grebes on Dryden Lake

Chris Wood found three breeding-plumaged Red-necked Grebes on Dryden Lake 
today, on a perfect "Dryden Lake day," with cold winds and rain in May. They 
were still present at about 4:00 pm this afternoon. Also, Bank, Barn, and Tree 
swallows circling low over the water in good numbers, also, totally typical for 
a day like today.

Daughter, Becky, & I, got to see them late yesterday afternoon. What a 
treat. Also had one pied-billed grebe & a kingfisher. Disappointed to 
not see any mergansers.  A fisherman said he had seen 2 bald eagles at 
the far east end but didn't know where the nest was.Has anyone seen 
a nest?

Lake Como was VERY quiet/calm but we did see a kingfisher in a tree in  
the swamp.

[cayugabirds-l] Red-necked grebes

Today, around 0900, there were 9 RED-NECKED GREBES in the bay just to the north 
of Taughannock Falls SP.  I continued north, checking various spots, but could 
find no more.

I found a Red-necked Grebe south of the point in Sheldrake. There
were also 6 Common Loons in the Sheldrake area but little else.
