Re: [cayugabirds-l] Rough legged hawk

2022-02-05 Thread b_clise
I've seen one hunting lake road fields, cayuga county, 3 times in the past 8
days. A joy to see once, let alone 3 times. Hovering above the fields makes for
great views. Also, on monday, I saw 2 rough legged hawks on rte 90 just north
of union springs, on telephone pole and in tree right beside the road. They
both looked darker than the other one to me. Great sightings in this
area!Barbara CliseSent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy smartphone

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Rough legged hawk - and Mt Pleasant!

2022-02-05 Thread Marie P. Read
Interesting. I had one on Mt Pleasant Road around 10 am today, directly
opposite the observatory. Could be the same one wandering the area, I suppose.

First I've seen one this year, and indeed first one on Mt Pleasant for several
years although they used to be winter regulars up here.

[cayugabirds-l] Rough legged hawk @ east hill

2021-03-07 Thread Suan Yong
This morning at 9am there was a rough legged hawk hovering and hunting near the
corner of Ellis Hollow and Game Farm roads. It was accompanied by a second
buteo, presumably a redtail. I stopped briefly to snap some photos en route to
an appointment.

At 10:30 on the way back from the appointment only a redtail (or possibly two,
one adult and one juv) was there.

This is the first rough leg I've seen in several years.

[cayugabirds-l] Rough-legged Hawk

2020-12-19 Thread Suzanne Gervais
Has anyone seen a rough legged hawk around the corner of rte 366 and Forest
Home? I believe I just saw one but am uncertain if that is what it was. Pretty
whitish underneath as it flies over with a belly patch and pretty dark back
when perched. Definitively not a red tail. Looked smaller. It looked to me
pretty much like the pictures of rough legged hawk on the Merlin app. I
followed it for a while. It kept flying on and off, looking down, from the
above mentioned corner to above the field on game farm and back to Forest Home.
It also was cognizant of my watching it.

[cayugabirds-l] Rough-legged hawk W and E of Warren at Cherry la today 2 Feb 19

2019-02-02 Thread AB Clark
At approximately 1430, a rough-legged hawk was hunting the field that makes up
the SW quadrat of Cherry La x Warren Rd. It sat watching from trees on N side
of Cherry la, then (disturbed by my stopping car) it moved a bit W along
Cherry, then East to sit on airport fencing along Warren’s E edge, S of Cherry
La intersection.

Sitting or in flight, there seemed to be lots of white patches. Mostly though
salt frosted windows, I managed to get some REALLY bad pictures that confirmed
a bright light patch on brow and possibly around throat. Quite a distinctive
head.

[cayugabirds-l] Rough-legged Hawk

2016-02-17 Thread Sandy Wold
Seen flying over Wegmans parking lot 3:30pm flying east. I reported one a
few months ago in this area, slightly south of Wegmans and flying in the
same direction.

There was a second hawk sitting in a tree nearby the inlet, where I was
standing. It sat with its back to me, and I could not make out what it
was. It had a very dark back with a small gold patch on each shoulder, and
it was Red-tailed Hawk-size.

About 3:30pm today. Close views then it spiraled up and away toward six mile

It had two golden patches on a dark brown back side. Two flocks of crows flew

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Rough legged hawk

2016-01-19 Thread Dave Nutter
Looking at Google Maps terrain feature, which has some too lines as well as
creeks, and comparing that to the aerial view to show field v forest, it
appears that the divide is west of Potomac Rd about halfway between Potomac Rd
and the west edge of the field along Searsburg Rd. The Interloken Trail appears
to be close to or on the divide where it crosses Searsburg Rd. So, most of
those fields are in the Cayuga Lake Basin along both sides of Potomac, but the
western extreme along Searsburg is out.

[cayugabirds-l] Rough-legged Hawk

2015-12-14 Thread John and Sue Gregoire
Had our first of season RLHA here today. It was a beautiful dark morph. Later
in the
day while birding some fields we enjoyed adult female and adult male (gray
ghost)
harriers hunting. Not sure which are more majestic flyers, harriers or TVs.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Rough-legged Hawk Dark Phase

2014-03-04 Thread Jeff Gerbracht
Dark Rough-legs are one of my favorite birds and I've noticed there seem to
be more around this year. I took a quick look at my eBird sightings for
these and in addition to the one on Burdick Hill, I've seen dark birds
multiple times at Freese Rd, Mt Pleasant, Midline Rd. and along Buffalo Rd
in Caroline. Most recently, there were two on my drive to the lab this
morning, one along Freese and one on Mt Pleasant.
Great winter to be out looking for hawks,
Jeff

The Rough-legged sitting in the tree today was definitely a dark-phase.

[cayugabirds-l] Rough-legged Hawk

2012-12-24 Thread Anne Marie Johnson
A Rough-legged Hawk just circled fairly high overhead. It was circling as
if trying to gain altitude. After circling a few times it headed due south
and disappeared.

I haven't seen the Common Redpoll here since Saturday. It must have joined
up with one of the flocks around. And I think all the goldfinches being
crowded out of other people's feeders by redpolls have come here. The
goldfinch flock grew to 65 yesterday! And I had 22 Mourning Doves.

Merry Christmas!

[cayugabirds-l] rough-legged hawk

2011-09-29 Thread B Mcaneny
Seen about 3pm on the east side of Cayuga View Rd about 100 yds from Rte 89
near Trumansburg. Flew up to a nearby tree branch as my car approached, so I
got a good look (no binox) at its dark back and tail and the striking white
slash across the base of the primaries. When it flew further away, it launched
downward from the tree branch, giving a good look at its underwings. Here the
clear white was more extensive and it was the most obvious feature. I did not
notice the belly or wrist patches before the bird tipped up again in haste to
depart. It was large, about the size of a red-tail.

[cayugabirds-l] Rough-legged hawk

2010-02-20 Thread Susan Fast
On a windy walk late yesterday morning in Brooktondale, I came upon what l
was sure was an early turkey vulture-long wings (a bit narrow, though);
long, straight tail; very dark above and below; pronounced dihedral to
wings; and the characteristic rocking motion. As it flew over me, the head
didn't seem right, however; then it drifted over a nearby field and began
hover-hunting which gave it away as a very dark morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, the
first I've seen in the area this winter.

[cayugabirds-l] Rough-legged hawk near Sandbank Road

2010-01-20 Thread Lindsay Goodloe
Here’s another sighting of a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK near the intersection of
Sandbank and W. King Roads. This one was a light-phase individual that flew
almost directly over my car at 11:45 this morning as I was driving north on W.
King toward Upper Buttermilk State Park about 1/4 mile north of the
intersection of Sandbank and W. King. It flew in a more or less westerly
direction over the open field adjacent to this section of W. King. I turned
around around and drove back toward and down Sandbank Road but was unable to
relocate the bird.
