Just saw what I believe to be a brown Eastern Screech Owl in the nest box
on the west side of the Swan Pen in Stewart park.

[cayugabirds-l] Screech owl at Dandy Mart today

2019-02-03 Thread Anne Marie Johnson
I saw the Eastern Screech-Owl in the opening of its hole at the Dandy Mart
at noon today. The cavity is about half way up a tree at the back edge of
the parking lot on the left side of the Dandy Mart on Rt. 79 in the village
of Slaterville Springs (in the town of Caroline). If you don’t see a dark
cavity, then the owl is probably in the opening, well camouflaged. The
cavity faces the parking lot and can be seen from the parking spaces on the
left side of the building.

[cayugabirds-l] Screech-Owl

2018-11-23 Thread bob mcguire
I got up in the middle of the night to put wood on the fire, and it was quite
light outside: full moon and cloudless skies. As I walked past the porch door I
noticed a familiar silhouette, an Eastern Screech-Owl perched on a box about a
foot from the glass! Our heat loss was its gain, I hope.

[cayugabirds-l] Screech owl in Slaterville Springs

2018-01-20 Thread Anne Marie Johnson
The Eastern Screech-Owl was in it's usual hole in a tree at the back of the
Dandy Mart parking lot in Slaterville Springs at around 4:30 yesterday. I
checked for it earlier in the afternoon, and it wasn't visible, but when I
went by at 4:30, it was sitting at the edge of the hole looking around.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Screech-Owl in Caroline now

2016-12-13 Thread John Confer
I drive by the Slaterville Dandy store, and often get a coffee. I always look
for the screech owl. I haven't seen it yet this season. However, as I left the
store a few days ago there was a flock of calling and apparently agitated
titmice flying around the hole and seeming to peer in it. I didn't see the owl,
but I bet the titmice did.

[cayugabirds-l] Screech-Owl in Caroline

2016-12-03 Thread Anne Marie Johnson
We heard from a friend that the Eastern Screech-Owl was back in the tree
behind the Dandy Mart on Rt. 79 in Slaterville Springs yesterday. She
spotted it at 4:30 pm.

For a couple of years an owl has roosted in a cavity in a tree at the edge
of the pavement behind the gas station/store. You can see the cavity
plainly from the parking spaces on the left side of the building (facing
the building from Rt. 79). The hole is about level with the parking lot
light nearby and faces the parking lot. If you don't see a hole, there's a
good chance the owl is in it.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Screech owl and eclipse

2015-09-28 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Animals sense the eclipse. We did experiments to study effect of Total Solar
eclipse on animal behaviors in India. They become quite restless. So night
animals might have something similar effect on total lunar eclipse.

I am glad so many got to see the eclipse, the weather god cooperated with us!

I also took the opportunity to look at the two galaxies when there was
totality. I could see very clearly Andromeda and the galaxy in Cassiopeia.

[cayugabirds-l] Screech Owl

2015-08-30 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,

Last night I heard an Eastern Screech Owl trilling and in between trilling he
made some kind of squeaky cooing noises. This is the first time I have heard
such calls. So I dragged myself out of my bed to fetch the recorder which was
still packed away in my bag from my trip to Montana. By the time I got it out
the screech owl had moved on or shut up.

Talking about Montana trip, I spent six days in Glacier National Park and had
numerous encounters with Dusky and Spruce Grouses and a long interaction with
White-tailed Ptarmigans. A very short encounter with a Sharp-tailed grouse. But
unfortunately, I had to cut my trip short for about 3 days as the whole of
Montana was filled with smoke due to forest fires in the state and mostly from
its neighboring states of Washington and Idaho. This is my first experience
with large forest fires. My god, they are scary to the wildlife and people who
live there. I heard stories about how black bears and mountain lions were
roaming around in the Great Falls neighborhood. I could not stand the smoke any
more so I had to call the airlines to change my ticket for immediate return.
More detailed trip report I will make it later and send a link to those who are
interested.

Cheers

Meena

[cayugabirds-l] Screech-Owl red morph on side of road

2015-03-09 Thread Caroline Manring
Driving down 96 into town today, there was a suspiciously rusty-colored
snowball on the shoulder. I pulled over and walked back, and sure enough,
there was a red morph Eastern Screech-Owl. It was alive but looking poorly.

By the time I got my coat off to get my sweater off so I had something to
confine it in on the way to the vet, it had started opening its eyes and
looking rather horrified with its predicament. When I bent down to it, it
flew up in that hover-y silent way, though a bit clumsily, and made it over
traffic into some nearby trees. It was likely still addled-- it made an
indecisive landing.

I can't help but think it was a very hungry or even starving bird, with all
this snow to contend with, and now it will have to try to hunt with a
concussion and/or whatever other injuries it might have sustained.

It makes me want to hang mice on a tree in our yard instead of Easter eggs.

Just in time when I was listening to a screech owl call on my computer! I was
trying to identify what sounded to me like a Screech Owl from recordings of my
recent Ecuador trip. I finally nailed it down as Choco Screech Owl Megascops
centralis. It amazingly sounds like our screech owl, but only has a very short
call. It was calling early morning on a Christmas Day!

Here you can listen to it!

Screech Owl in the yard. Minutes later the Barred Owls began hooting over
towards Lindsay-Parsons, and that was that!

[cayugabirds-l] Screech Owl in the box

2013-10-20 Thread Chris R. Pelkie
Following Robyn's report of the return of her screechie, I was pleased to see
for the 2nd time in a month, an owl sunning itself in my box, here in S Lansing.

Just shy of a month ago (9/23), I spotted an owl one afternoon, but without my
binocs, and because the box faces East and this was 4pm, I wasn't sure of the
color, but thought it was Grey morph. By the time I got back from the house
with binocs, it had disappeared and was not seen there since, though we heard 2
owls calling many evenings or early mornings in the interim. They would appear
to pass through, maybe moving through a territory; 2 would counter call several
times over 1-2 minutes: you could hear them farther away, then in our woods,
then moving along in the same direction then out of earshot. Sometimes at dusk,
occasionally closer to midnight, a couple times at dawn (I'm a light sleeper
and they seem to invariably wake me up).

However, this sunny AM in full sun and with binocs at hand, I saw a Grey morph
EASTERN SCREECH-OWL in the box, eyes closed and seemingly unperturbed by the
dog and me. However, once again, this bird seems somewhat more skittish about
my presence, or is camera shy, because it disappeared in the 2 mins it took to
get back with camera.

Hopeful this is the start of a nest!

Yesterday, I had one of those 'bird piñata' days in the backyard, where it
seems like someone smacked open a piñata and out burst a variety of birds.
It was mainly due to the weird air, the wind direction, approaching rain, time
of year, presence of cherries and grapes, and migration waves coinciding,
though with a lot of residents joining in. Standing in one location and just
rotating, I had a female PILEATED WP, female FLICKER, DOWNY WP, male
RED-BELLIED WP, quick glimpse of probably female YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER
(they've been rare this year in our woods), RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH checking out
a hornet nest high in a sapling, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH stashing sunflower
seeds, a flock of about 40 CEDAR WAXWINGS (close study revealed no Bohemian to
add to my yard list), numerous recently arrived DARK-EYED JUNCOs, numerous
calling (both Tseeps and Peabodys) though hard to see WHITE-THROATED SPARROWs
(one gloriously full colored M did pop up though), several GOLDEN-CROWNED
KINGLETs, BLUE JAYs, 3 TURKEY VULTUREs circling rather low overhead, many
AMERICAN ROBINs feeding on the berries, 2 vocalizing CAROLINA WRENs (one was
Tweed-e-o'ing while the other was doing a Bronx cheer), and a single
observation of a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER (actually first time for this year's
yard list, though I saw this species earlier this year elsewhere); the Warbler
was chewing on a grape: it was pecking at it, getting small mouthfuls at a
time; took several passes on the same fruit while it was attached to the vine.
BC CHICKADEE and TUFTED TITMOUSE upped the count for that single stance. I then
walked to the other side of the property where I had in the same bush only a
few feet away, 4 more Golden-crowned Kinglets and a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET all
together. I think this is the first time I've had both Kinglets in the same
view at the same time. So much energy packed into one bush! Lots of vocalizing
and hopping about.

[cayugabirds-l] screech-owl with breakfast

2013-10-17 Thread Robyn Bailey
This morning I noticed a screech-owl face in my owl box while eating my
breakfast. I check the box every day and usually there is nothing there, maybe
a flicker or titmouse if I'm lucky. But if I recall correctly, this is the time
of year they start to roost in the box again.

Speaking of owl boxes, the Conservation Action Committee and Lansing Pathways
will be installing 2 owl boxes and 2 kestrel boxes (same style box, different
habitat) as part of the Salt Point and Lansing Center Trail nest box trails, in
addition to small songbird boxes. There could potentially be more opportunities
to spot small raptors on these trails, if they're successful. I invite anyone
not going on the CBC field trip to join us at Salt Point in Lansing this
Saturday, 9am-until done, to help install these nesting boxes. One benefit is
that you will know the exact location of the owl boxes, should you ever want to
check them.

Best,
Robyn Bailey

[cayugabirds-l] Screech-owl

2013-03-06 Thread Marc Devokaitis
Driving east (30mph) on Slaterville/Harford road (Caroline?) at about
7:15PM yesterday evening, my companion and I were startled by a collision
and accompanying loud thud on the passenger side of the windshield of my
early model Nissan Sentra. After a few breathless seconds we stopped,
turned around, and found the object of our unfortunate encounter--a gray
Eastern Screech-owl, sitting motionless, eyes closed, right in the center
of the poorly-lit road.

I pulled the car to the side of the animal and put my flashers on. Keeping
the owl in the indirect beam of the headlights, I squatted close to take a
look. It was clearly sitting upright, and there was no visible external
damage. As soon as I was on the owl's level, it shuffled itself a bit and
within a moment, opened wide its calm, yellow-green eyes. It turned its
head and looked at me. I said some gentle words of sincere apology. It
blinked, and made a single, plaintive noise that I can best describe as a
sonorous peep. It was a ridiculously adorable creature.

Still quite unsure of the overall condition of this being, I timidly
stroked the back of its head. He bristled mildly. Sensing the bird was
coming out of being stunned, I thought the most important thing was to
determine whether the wings were damaged. I prodded a bit more insistently
on its back, hoping to get it to stretch its appendages a bit. It obliged,
and after the briefest of self-exploratory motions, the owl whisked itself
out of sight into the adjacent woods.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Screech-owl

2013-03-06 Thread Robin Cisne
I'm glad to hear that Marc's owl recovered quickly. Last fall I witnessed
a young Red-Tailed Hawk, inexpertly hunting, collide with a car, and I
ended up taking it to CU's Wildlife Rehab facility on Hungerford Hill Rd.
Weeks later they emailed to say that it was expected to make a complete
recovery and would be released back into the wild. I'm so glad to know
that we have professional, emergency wildlife care in the area.

And the RWBBs were back in Brooktondale this morning. And the geese are
migrating!

[cayugabirds-l] Screech Owl on EI Rectration way

2013-02-14 Thread Meena Haribal
Hi all,

Today I walked home from work. Around 5.30 PM I saw a Screech Owl sitting with
its head slightly out of the box on the East Ithaca recreation way section
between Mitchell and Honness lane section.

This box is above the another box on the east side of the trail about quarter
kilometer from Mitchell street. A couple of years ago I had photographed three
cheery babies of Grey Squirrel peering out of the same box and one playing
around by getting in and out. They looked like they had just started seeing the
new world and humans for the first time. They had such curiosity in their eyes!

Cheers

[cayugabirds-l] Screech-owl

2012-12-31 Thread bob mcguire
A red morph Eastern Screech-owl was present in its home snag along the
East Ithaca Recreation Way this afternoon at 4:00. Whoever will be
counting in Area IV may wish to check it out. Park at Game Farm Rd.
Walk in .25 miles (sign on the south side of the trail). Turn around
and walk back 20 steps. Look up to the right. The roost hole is in a
broken-off 30' tall tree alongside the trail. About 2' from the top.
(Or whistle!)

[cayugabirds-l] Screech Owl Sweazey Rd

2012-01-08 Thread Donna Scott
I went down Sweazey Rd. in Lansing, (off Rt. 34B-Ridge Road, about 4.5 miles
from the South Lansing stop light), drove west just past the Cornell Orchards
onto the dirt part of the road, and found the SCREECH OWL in a somewhat wide
south-facing cavity, in a branch (barkless) that points west from the trunk of
the dead tree, on the north side of the road. About 20-30 feet from the road.
Owl was sound asleep.

In warmer weather I hear them all the time around my house here, but have never
been able to find them in a hole in a tree!
