[cayugabirds-l] Seneca Falls Gyrfalcon continues

Went out hoping for some roadside birds after a ~6inch snowfall overnight but 
didn't see a one,
Came across the Gyrfalcon pole sitting and managed some pics...

before it flew to a tree overlooking a goose flock. The geese did not seem 
concerned by this.
A jittery mixed flock of Horned Larks, Snow Buntings and Lapland Longspurs were 
distant in a field North of Stahl Rd.

[cayugabirds-l] Seneca Falls Gyrfalcon Continues

Diane, Ken, and I arrived at the quarry along Hoster Road at 7:10 this morning 
to stake out the Gyrfalcon that has been reported there the past few days (and 
has wintered in the vicinity the past few winters - though perhaps not the same 
bird). Apparently the Gyr roosts on the west wall of the quarry and sallies 
forth each morning in search of prey. Between the pools at the Refuge, the 
north end of Cayuga lake, and the open stream that runs out through Canoga, 
there is certainly a robust selection of waterfowl to keep it well fed. 

Our plan was to set up there at sunrise and wait until the Gyr headed out for 
breakfast. At 8:25 the bird flew into the bare trees just beyond the green 
machinery (rock-crusher?) and began to preen. We were fortunate that the light 
was strong and low, there was no wind, and the bird was not obscured by 
branches - and were able to observe it for a good half hour before leaving. A 
report from another birder a while later noted that it was no longer present. 
As noted in the eBird report, it is a large-bodied bird (full, deep chest) with 
gray mustache stripe (not as pronounced as with Peregrine), and gray-brown 
breast spots.

One additional note here: Shortly after we arrived (around 7:25) a largish 
raptor flew rapidly past us, just above ground level, from south to north and 
disappeared between gravel piles back into the quarry. It happened so fast that 
we were not able to get any optics on it nor really fix on any significant 
field marks. I could have been the Gyr - or a Peregrine or, possible, a 
Cooper’s Hawk.

[cayugabirds-l] Seneca Falls Gyrfalcon, Snowy Owls continue

This afternoon after passing the Seneca Stone Quarry, twice scanning the 
complex from Hoster Road between 2:30 and 3:00 with no luck, I returned one 
more time around 3:30 to find Josh Snodgrass and friend with the bird perched 
in the trees over the Quarry. 3 Snowy Owls were still visible from the south 
end of the airport and the "queen" Snowy was atop the grainery at the Lott farm 
on 414. Another Snowy continues in the area of route 96a and Kime Road east of 
Geneva although today it was only visible from Nelson Road looking north. A 
huge flock of Snow Geese were covering a field on the north side of Yellow 
Tavern Road just west of route 96.

[cayugabirds-l] Seneca Falls Gyrfalcon

I was blessed to have crossed paths with a Gryfalcon late yesterday south of 
Seneca Falls, as Mike Tetlow communicated last night. Thanks Mike.


The bird was in a field feeding. It flew up into a nearby tree shortly after I 
pulled over. It did not like that I stopped but didn't want to leave it's meal. 
I sat in the car and after awhile it came back to continue feeding. It did not 
like that distance so pulled the duck further out into the field.


In looking at pictures of this bird and ones David Kennedy posted, it appears 
to be the same bird.


I hope others relocate the bird, its impressive.

Canoga in Seneca Falls. Joe I hope you don't mind me linking the photo. Great 
find. Likely the same bird seen near Finger Lakes Airport last Thursday.
