[cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owl: Ithaca Tompkins Airport
Happy New Year everyone! It's worthwhile noting that Short-eared Owls seem rather abundant this year and it may be beneficial scouting large fallow fields during evening Civil Twilight—when the birds begin to forage. January 1st, shortly after 5pm, there was a single foraging SHORT-EARED OWL within the fenced-in confines of the Ithaca Tompkins International Airport, seen at a distance from Snyder Road (near the Cornell Chemical Disposal Site building) looking Southwest. The bird was occasionally visible with binoculars when it passed in front of lighted airport hangars. The bird was first spotted by me while using a thermal-imaging monocular—easily visible in the thermal scope as a white bird fluttering in moth-like fashion above the distant field. This is a "safe" non-roosting location for disclosure, because nobody can wander onto the fenced-in airport fields. The bird was also seen by Scott Anthony, as well as Marianne and Andrew Ridley—owners of the thermal scope. We also spotted a non-vocal Great Horned Owl perched atop the Cornell Chemical Disposal Site building; which later flew and perched in a nearby tree—easily visible using the thermal scope. Recent SEOW sightings may be found by searching eBird’s mapping tool (Species: Short-eared Owl; Date: Jan-Jan, Current year; Location: Tompkins County; Select “Show Points Sooner" if zoomed out): https://ebird.org/map/sheowl?neg=true=-76.75796935096129=42.142747964409615=-76.1763806058441=42.74672139161836=true=false=Z=false=false=on=1=1=cur Please respect private property and give owls the space they need to roost, feed, and forage without disruption from their routine. [cayugabirds-l] Short-eared owl?
Should have reported this earlier but on 10/23 at around 6:30pm I saw a bird consistent with SHORT-EARED OWL on Townsendville Rd. near Fox Rd. in Lodi, an area where they are seen in winter. It was late dusk so I couldn't see coloration but it was the right size, lithe and bulky. I think worth checking the area more at least. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] Short eared owl
Having been unable to attend CBC field trip Sat morn, I was able to drive around N Lansing/S Cay. County looking for larks & buntings etc. late afternoon Sat. Mostly struck out, seeing only a couple RT Hawks, a few CA Geese & 1 MODO! (& a few chickens). At dusk I ended up well east of Aurora so decided to drive west on rural roads & try Long Pt St Pk Rd by winery. After ~10 min. wait down hill 100' from farm house I was rewarded with a nice flyover of a Short Eared Owl! It swooped around in front of me then flew SE out of sight. Only one I saw. [cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owl on Bluegrass Lane (northeast Ithaca)
Marshall Iliff, Ken Rosenberg, and I had a Short-eared Owl again this evening over the field of tall switchgrass on Bluegrass Lane. This is the first report from Bluegrass (that I know of) since Ken had a SEOW here last Friday, but I don't know how many times it's been looked for since then. Tonight it appeared at 18:23 and put on a very nice show; when we finally lost sight of it, it was drifting east over the now fallow field along Hanshaw Road. tss -- Thomas S. [cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owl ballet
Went to see the SE Owl show at Long Point Winery this evening. There were at least six birds active. One had a run-in with a female Northern Harrier in the air--perhaps a vole ownership dispute. This was my second time seeing this particular show in my life and I recommend it highly. The birds are quite striking both in markings and flight style. They're almost moth-like, as if more buoyant or less earthly--slightly less subject to the rigors of gravity--than other birds (even the harrier, who's no slouch at lofting). Also their faces, because of the bold eye markings, are discernible even with the naked eye, so it's possible to track where they're looking as they fly. That action can be hard to see in other birds, so watching the SE Owls hunt is like getting to see a bird's real-time perception and decision-making. It's riveting. I haven't got my Sibley handy, only photos-- is the coloration in Short-eared Owls as rosy/buffy on the underwings and belly as it seems, or is that just the usual lighting conditions for snapping shots of these owls? One pic did show a more high contrast bird (almost black and white). By the way, re: Sibley not knowing everything: both a horrifying and comforting thought. At 3:25 this afternoon while sitting at the kitchen table, a movement outside caught my eye. It was a SHORT EARED OWL hunting in the pasture next to my house (hall road) on the south side. We got great views of it hunting (tho a little blurry thru my husbands bins since mine are on their way to nikon for repair- ugh!) . It would hover in one place four 4 or 5 seconds then either dive or move to another vantage point often sitting on a roadside fence post. We had great views from the second floor and watched until he flew west at around 3:40. I was just getting ready to go for a drive to look for owls and this one came to me! [cayugabirds-l] Short eared owl
1 SHORT EARED OWL well after sunset on Carncross Rd., near the berm and the new bridge to Howland Island. After viewing the 100s of thousands of SNOW GEESE at Cayuga Lake State Park, after my sister left to return to Fairport, I drove north to Carncross Rd. to see if I could find a Short Eared Owl. (BTW, many 1000s of Snow geese left the lake and flew sort of NW by 5 PM yesterday; the numbers on the water seemed less than 3 hours earlier). It got very cold walking on Carncross Rd. and some of the gusts of wind out of the west were so strong I almost got blown off the berm near the new bridge. Also, a couple huge farm dump trucks appeared to be taking soil into Howland Island. They stirred up a lot of dust. After walks up and down the road, I had to keep getting back in the car to warm up and wolf down my supper, while keeping an eye peeled for an owl. I was finally rewarded well after sunset, when a Short Eared Owl appeared right near my car over the field to the north of the road (field has tamped down grass and reeds, not cornstalks). It flew and hovered, back and forth over the field, while I leaned over the passenger seat with my binocs looking out the open window. It was sihouetted against the sky that still had enough light to see its colors. Beautiful! After 2-3 minutes of watching the owl, I got out of the car as quietly as I could, but a vehicle went by just then, and I did not see the owl after that. What a great day of birding! Donna L. [cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owl @ Morgan road
Based on intelligence I received from Mark Chao, I stopped by the DEC facility on Morgan Road, just north of Savannah, yesterday in hopes of seeing short-eared owls. Unfortunately, I did not make it up there until 6:20 (Mark reported them being active up to an hour before sunset) but was rewarded with great views of at least three short-eared owls. Two were prowling the vegetation and provided numerous close views, albeit with failing light. One bird was on the ice, possible with prey but it was far enough out that I couldn't be sure. I had not previously had the opportunity to hear them vocalizing like they were last night. There were spectacular numbers of waterfowl in flight, in fields, and in any open water throughout the Northern Montezuma Wildlife Management Area. It was quite an evening! [cayugabirds-l] Short-eared owl in Ovid, different location
This evening about 6pm I saw one short-eared owl on co rd 139, just west of rt 96, also known as Happy Landing. I had just turned onto co rd 139 heading west and saw a large bird fly over the road ahead of me. I pulled over and had good views over the fields on the south side of the road for the few moments I had available, but could not stay long. [cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owl Trip
On a very cold, blustery day seventeen brave people, six being members of the Cornell Student Bird Club, joined me in search of Short-eared Owls. Because we started at 3:00 P.M. we had at least two hours before sunset. We carpooled to Myers Point. It was extremely windy with high waves to see much in the water. Many of us scoped the area and saw only three species of gulls and Mallards. We next went to Ladoga to get out of the wind and hoped to more species of waterfowl. Stepping out of his car, Paul Anderson commented as to how balmy it felt. We scanned for awhile. The outcome was a flotilla of Coots, Mallards, two Black Ducks and two Common Loons. We then drove to the end of Scofield Road in Lansing where Gary Kohlenberg and I saw an owl two days previously. Nothing was being seen because it was really early, so thirteen of us walked to the end of the road to keep warm. It was a extremely quiet for birds. As the sun became lower in the sky, we did see three flocks of Canada Geese flying south. Eventually, it became dark enough to see some planets - Venus and Jupiter. Someone put a scope on Jupiter, and we all saw four moons. Then, our moon rose. It was hugh and orange. We gawked at it. We waited until dark to see a Short-eared Owl, but to no avail. It was disappointing, but everyone still had a great time. Many said they would go next year. I want to say thanks to everyone who joined me on the trip. It was great! One last thing - Bob McGuire composed this haiku before the trip was over: High hopes, Seven scopes, No owls. [cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owl, Myers Pt.
Jeff Gerbracht and I had a Short-eared Owl at Myers this afternoon. When we left it was sitting halfway up a tall spruce tree at the north end of the Marina. Although the tree itself is on private property, the bird was visible from the Marina. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S9095003 -- Tim Lenz t...@cornell.edu Web Applications Developer Cornell Lab of Ornithology -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
RE: [cayugabirds-l] Short-eared owl
I was one of many goofy birders that saw the NECO in the fall of 2005 in Maryland. In fact, the day I went with Winger West to see it, I was on the phone with my wife, Jill, who was in California at the time. She was telling me about the Hermit Warbler she was looking at. I said, You saw a Hermit Warbler? Rick Sussman, another Maryland birder standing near by, heard me and asked, who the heck are you talking to and where are they? Things like yard lists and such bring up such wonderful memories. We had a Golden Eagle in our yard in Hyrum, Utah, one day when we came home from shopping in Salt Lake City. For most geographical entities, whether abstract (nation, province, state, township, city, village, school district...) or physical (like the Cayuga basin), a bright line is presumed, and your bird is either inside or its outside the line. But the yard is more whimsical: its boundary expands and contracts with weather, lighting, and the availability of sanctioned instruments (which might include optics, sky-microphones, helium balloons, etc.), and so your bird is always in! -Geo On Mar 30, 2011, at 8:08 PM, RICHARD JILL WOOD wrote: Note that a state bird is different. [cayugabirds-l] Short-eared owl
Mary Jean, Phil and I saw one short-eared owl along center road near co. rd. 129 in the town of Ovid, yesterday, December 8, about 5pm. We drove several roads in the general area and saw several northern harriers, but no additional owls.
