East side, between Mekeel and Swamp College Rds, a few dozen I’d say landing
and feeding in a field (winter grain?) that’s beginning to green up.

It has been an interesting day for geese. Had a flock (I assume the same one)
fly over our house in Lansing about 5 times this morning. Wondering if they
were trying to go to Myers area and deciding against it but couldn't find
anything they liked off the lake.

Had a couple hundred snow geese and a couple separate flocks of Canadas near
Trumansburg. Snow Geese headed north and Canada flocks headed south. The first
flock of Canadas were still jostling for position as they flew over.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese over Lansing NY this s morning

2024-01-05 Thread Patrick L. McDonough
Hello All and Happy New Year!
On the early morning walk today I saw 100's of Snow Geese flying northwest over
the Lake and Lansing. I posted a photo and video on my Instagram page
(@patlmcd) if you would like to see them; I have never seen this many flying
overhead.
Have a great day and get ready for the snow this weekend, too.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese on Cayuga Lake

2023-12-09 Thread Marty Schlabach
Driving south bound on rt 89 along the west side of Cayuga Lake just before
dark, we saw a very large raft of snow geese out in the middle of the lake. It
extended from a bit north of where Romulus-Varick Townline Rd meets rt 89 south
to Deans Cove.

And when we got home, we were hearing snow geese overhead as well.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese etc

2023-03-12 Thread Suan Yong
Around noon today we saw from Union Springs a large continuum of skeins across
the lake land towards the opposite shore - we think - which according to google
maps would be offshore from Canoga where there is no public access. When we
drove back south around 2:30, we saw a few "small" islands of snow geese not
too far offshore, between Dean's Cove and Thirsty Owl; we were in a hurry then
so did not stop to investigate further.

Other highlights of our trip including the most cooperative snow bunting ever
on Davis road, perched on a bush right by the road where we pulled over and
staying out for fantastic naked eye looks by everyone before we got out of the
van. We saw a few more small flocks of snow buntings and horned larks
throughout the day, including on the west side of the lake coming down. A pair
of merlins were at Frontenac park in Union springs as well. Good variety of
waterfowl at factory street pond as well as at the MNWR visitor center where
four sandhill were a big hit, especially when they started dancing.

a cacophony of sound and panicked flight following a volley of gunshots.

I had a larger raft on the water north of Taughannock this morning plus a
large flyover flock heading north.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese?

2023-03-03 Thread Suan Yong
I was just at Aurora where I could barely make out a "small" (~1-2k?) island of
snow geese in the distance, slightly south of due west. I suspect this is one
of the islands Geo saw from the other side, and I believe it is located in the
middle of the lake at the widest point of the lake, pretty much as far away
from shore than they can get. This has been a popular spot to raft in past
years, distantly visible from Dean's Cove against the backdrop of Aurora's
pretty buildings, where they look to be closer to the east shore when in fact
they probably aren't.

Did not encounter any bigger flocks, just a few small high flyover groups.
Visitor Center pool was thinly frozen over and hosting Canada geese, pintails,
and green-winged teals, with three Sandhill Cranes joined by three others for a
bit before three departed. It was fun watching them all negotiate the ice, with
some nice long slidey landings by pintails. We'll see if any of my videos turn
out watchable.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese?

2023-03-03 Thread Alyssa Johnson
Hi everyone,

I’ve been out in the Complex the last 2 afternoons. Most of the marshes,
including the muck flats along 31 are frozen still. I found a large flock
(approximately 100,000) on Gravel Road behind the Tyre Municipality Building
yesterday about 5 pm. Carncross Road was good for swans (several hundred likely
mostly Tundra based on what I was hearing), and thousands of ducks including
Northern Pintail, Mallard, American Black Ducks, American Wigeon… maybe more.
On the south side of the road, a lot of that closest field was open. I could
see beyond there must have been holes in the ice here and there where the birds
were concentrating, but most of it is not easy to view because of distance and
vegetation. I didn’t get to Morgan Rd, but I’m guessing the units between the
parking lot and river are mostly frozen still. That’s been a good spot in years
past for eagles on the ice and divers. I also didn’t make it to VanDyne Spoor
Rd, but guessing similar conditions.

To anyone who isn’t familiar with Carncross and VanDyne Spoor Roads, they are
seasonally maintained. So the last 2 days they were a little slushy and muddy
but I made it fine. After tonight/tomorrow, I wouldn’t risk it personally. When
I worked at Montezuma, occasionally I’d answer a call of “help! come save me”
and all I could do was suggest Reed’s Towing.

I am about to drive the entire west side of Cayuga to see if I can find the
snow goose ice burg I expect is floating out there. If the marshes stay frozen,
the geese will likely continue to stage in “smaller” groups in ag fields and on
the lake then move on. But if the marshes melt, especially along Route 31, I
bet they will dump in there and stage in numbers north of 500k. Last year it
was estimated at the muck flats, at one time, 600-800,000 snow geese, 3000
tundras, and tens of thousands of ducks!

Final thought- if anyone is interested in a guided tour, I just started working
through Airbnb as an “Experience Host”! I don’t want to overstep and self
promote too much here, but if you email me privately, I’d be happy to share
more information about how that works and my availability.

[cayugabirds-l] snow geese and black birds and more

2023-03-02 Thread Deb Grantham
Yesterday afternoon, I watched as clouds and clouds of snow geese descended
across Route 79, going from north to south, and appeared to land in ag fields.
I think there were thousands, but there was no way to count but the process
went on for 10 minutes or more. I was watching from Sheffield Road,
Ithaca/Enfield town line. I drove around but never could find the fields they
may have landed in.

This morning, I watched a stream of black birds cross my property from the east
and cross Sheffield Road to land across the street in the horse farm there.
There were dozens in any cross section you might cut through the stream and it
went on for over 5 minutes. I clearly saw a good proportion of grackles, could
see their tails. I saw some smaller, compact birds that could have been
cowbirds. But other than the grackle tails, I couldn't see anything well enough
to identify species.

One interesting point was that a home fuel oil truck drove past and when it
went under the stream of birds, they were clearly buffeted by the turbulence.
They were about 15 or 20 feet above the truck.

And I saw 7 bluebirds in my yard today.

driving east toward Geneva on 5 and 20. It was an amazing sight. It was

The snow geese that I also saw today were up along Rt 89 not far from Wolffy's

The snow geese that I also saw today were up along Rt 89 not far from
Wolffy's Grill and there must have been closer to 50,000 between those
rafting on the lake and those flying overhead! Amazing!

[cayugabirds-l] snow geese flying

2023-02-27 Thread Deb Grantham
This afternoon, between 4:30 and 5:30 pm, I saw thousands of snow geese flying
south, group after group. I estimate 2,000 to 4,000 but it was extremely
difficult to count!

This was from Sheffield Road, the Ithaca/Enfield town line and about ¼ mile
north of Rt. 79.

I also quite a few Vs of Canada geese that were circling or doing a 180, hard
to tell, I think they were mostly heading south/south-east. There were far
fewer of those than the snow geese.

And I've been hearing red-winged blackbirds but haven't seen them yet.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow geese over Seneca Falls & MNWR Visitor's Center

2023-02-16 Thread job121830
16 Feb. 2023 This afternoon daughter Becky & I saw great, strung out flocks of
snows flying north in both areas. The flocks over the visitor's center appeared
to be too high to be heading to "the muck" but I didn't have time to head that
way to check. Becky sees flights over her place on Ridge Rd., 1 3/4 mi. east of
Union Springs & also many in nearby farm fields.
Also saw a mixed flock of 'black birds' heading to refuge trees to roost. Best
sighting was a female harrier hunting over a field just west of the
intersection of 318 & 5 & 20.

Thousands upon thousands of Snow Geese are flying high over head currently in
Geneva. I can barely make them out as a i’m losing light and it’s snowing, but
I can definitely hear them. It seems like many have stuck around this year!
Hopefully the March migration is as fantastic as always.

RE:[cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese

2022-12-13 Thread Deb Grantham
A smallish V of snow geese were flying high above and parallel to Sheffield
Road, Ithaca/Enfield town line, at about 9:30 am today. There may have been a
couple dozen birds. Heading south, of course.

A very large and messy formation of geese flew overhead yesterday evening, just
light enough to see them. Looked like Canada geese but light was bad and they
were high. Heading south. Vees within Vees and messy. Could have been a couple
hundred.

Caught a glimpse of what I think was a Cooper’s hawk heading from my pasture on
Sheffield Road into the hedgerow about 1:30 today.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow geese over Geneva

2022-11-26 Thread Alyssa Johnson
This evening just about sunset, I heard that recognizable higher pitched,
sporadic honking of a snow goose flock flying over.

There were about 150-200 in a messy U shape flying NE, probably looking for a
good corn field to roost in overnight. I was on the west side of the city when
I noticed them.

We definitely don’t see the hundreds of thousands in the fall, as we do during
the spring waterfowl migration. On the Atlantic Flyway, I’ve learned during the
fall migration they take a more direct route from the tundra breeding grounds,
to the east coast and then move south where they’ll winter. In the spring they
seem to make more of an in-land route cutting through DE/PA/NY and on around
the Great Lakes.

I already can’t wait to hear them in March!

Aurora &/or Deans cove, an often safe spot for them, esp. during hunting season
of any kind. They hear shots & head for mid-lake. This is common for Cayuga &
Owasco lakes where we often see large rafts of snows & sometimes blues..

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Snow geese raft

2022-11-24 Thread Deb Grantham
About 4:45 pm from west side of lake near Cayuga Lake State Park: many snow
geese, some in a smallish raft, some flying south but low along the lake.

Also several dozen swans nearer the shore and scattered long a stretch of about
¾ mile. Not sure what kind, was getting too dark.

Two great blue herons.

Lots of small water fowl that I think were coots but am not at all sure.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese - A Huge Problem

2022-03-22 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
Hi everyone,

Here is a great article from Ducks Unlimited:
https://www.ducks.org/conservation/national/light-goose-dilemma

There can be a great impact on the public when we get to experience things like
the annual spring Snow Goose migration through the Finger Lakes, because it is
amazing! Whenever I work with a tour group or give a presentation, I include
this sort of information about the degradation of the arctic breeding grounds.
The spectacle of seeing the geese can open up conversations about climate
change, carrying capacity, and relative perspectives. We love them, but they're
here for such a short amount of time I think we can all agree on the
general feeling toward Canada Geese: messy, mean, ew, too many, pests, etc. Do
we value Snow Geese more because they're graceful white birds similar to swans?
And, because they're not here long enough to annoy us and degrade crops?

I always talk a lot about Mute Swans and European Starlings in these kinds of
conversations. Ecologically, both species are similar in the damages they cause
to native breeding birds, but we all know that many people LOVE Mute Swans and
detest Starlings. Why? Big, white, graceful bird who is mostly out of sight and
out of mind in a wetland somewhere when attacking and killing native birds? The
carnage isn't as always in your face like we might see Starlings do. They'll
come to our feeders by the dozens and many people see first-hand the damage
they do because of nest boxes we check on, thus are more apt to see the
carnage. Anyway, there is a lot of psychology involved with wildlife management
and public perception of wildlife and it's interesting to discuss.

Back to the article: "Light Goose" refers to Lesser and Greater Snow Geese, as
well as Ross's Geese collectively (vs darker Canadas).

A few excerpts:

"Why have light goose numbers increased so dramatically over the past half
century? In simple terms, the birds have benefited from the expansion of
agriculture on their migration<http://www.ducks.org/hunting/migration> and
wintering areas, which has provided them with an almost unlimited food supply.
This has increased survival, allowing more young birds to reach breeding age
and more adults to return to the breeding grounds in better condition, which
has increased productivity.

Changes in land use have also altered the migration and wintering distribution
of light geese. ... In recent decades, light geese have become more widely
distributed as the birds have shifted to a diet largely consisting of waste
grain and other agricultural foods during migration and winter. Lesser snow
geese are now wintering farther north and over a much greater area than ever
before, and Ross's geese have steadily expanded their range eastward over the
past few decades."

"The effects of light goose overabundance were initially documented on breeding
areas in the central and eastern Arctic and subarctic, but recent surveys
indicate that population growth of lesser snow geese could also be occurring in
the western Arctic at a similar pace. Although waterfowl managers believe
existing breeding habitats can support light goose populations at current
levels, the point at which continued population growth will exceed the capacity
of the landscape to sustain the birds has yet to be determined. When
traditional breeding habitats are degraded, light geese simply shift to
different habitats or move to new areas where conditions are more favorable. No
one knows how much potential breeding habitat exists in the Arctic and
subarctic, or the proportion of current light goose breeding habitat that has
been damaged or destroyed. In addition, more research is needed to determine
light goose impacts on migration habitats during spring and fall."

"Defining a problem is not nearly as difficult as solving it, and so far the
primary means of light goose population control has been through harvest
management. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Canadian
Wildlife Service (CWS) have the shared responsibility of conserving waterfowl
under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in the United States and the Migratory
Birds Convention Act in Canada. State and provincial wildlife agencies are also
partners with significant management authority and operate within harvest
frameworks established by federal agencies."

Greetings All,
For all of you who have been seeing the Snow Goose “breathtaking spectacle”

A number of years ago I attended a program at MNWR which focused on the
out-of-control Snow Goose population and the devastating effect they are having
the tundra where they breed. Bottom line is that Snow Geese are destroying the
ultra-fragile tundra, which is made up of primarily of lichens which grow
exceedingly slow. Snow Goose foraging behavior causes them to uproot the
lichens entirely rather than nip them off above ground, which results in a
Tundra desert.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow geese at Montezuma and guided tours!

2022-03-07 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
I have not been in the Montezuma area since Saturday, so I've been missing the
show! I've been getting almost hour by hour updates though from many birders
who have been out that way and...

It sounds like the Snow Geese have ARRIVED! The muck flats on Route 31 between
Savannah and Montezuma (town) are packed with Snow Geese, swans, ducks, and
Canadas! Many people have been enjoying them the last few days, don't delay
until next week because it very well could be too late, and I can't predict how
long they'll be around.

If you go to look for them:

-The gravel "pull offs" (which are used for loading/unloading equipment by the
farmer) on 31 itself are privately owned, and I have no authority to grant
people access to park there, however they've been used for a long time and the
owners don't seem to mind.
-please do not stop on route 31 or walk across! The traffic goes very fast
through there and there is no safe place to get out of the way.
-please look around before you leave, to make sure no litter, masks, bottles,
etc. fell out of your vehicle when getting in and out
-the fields along 31 are primarily private lands, although there is a strip of
refuge owned land closer to the canal on the west side. There is no public
access for people to be out in the fields either on refuge or private lands here
-hunting may occur on these fields. Usually, decoys are set on the south side
of 31. This is legal, the landowners can hunt or allow anyone to hunt there if
they like, and snow geese are a well populated species that needs management.

I have guided tours on the schedule this week, and Wednesday's tour has no one
registered yet! It's going to be great birding; I can't believe it hasn't sold
out yet.

Here are links for more info and to register for upcoming tours:

3/9/22 https://act.audubon.org/a/montezuma-birding-tour-030922

3/12/22 https://act.audubon.org/a/montezuma-birding-tour-31222

The full schedule of Montezuma Audubon Center events is listed at: Programs &
Events

And lastly, I am offering my All About Snow Geese presentation virtually
Thursday evening! I have recently given this presentation, so if you already
attended, this will be very similar. I do record them and if you can't make it
Thursday night, if you register, I will send the recording to you afterwards.

https://act.audubon.org/a/all-about-snow-geese-031022

If you use Facebook, give us a
follow- I'm trying to keep it updated over there and I posted a map of how to
find the muck flats recently, it may be buried in the pics of the last day or
so.

Good luck!

in the entrance to the YMCA Camp and look across (slightly northeast toward a
yellow piece of farm equipment near the forest, they were midway, in a

RE: [cayugabirds-l] snow geese feeding with Canada geese

2022-02-27 Thread Susan Evans-Pond
I found the snow geese Deb mentioned, about 20-25, with 1 adult blue morph,
by themselves in the ag field, possibly about one field further west. If
you park in the entrance to the YMCA Camp and look across (slightly
northeast toward a yellow piece of farm equipment near the forest, they were
midway, in a sheltered down-slope area in front of a thin line of trees.
The Canada Geese flock was in a field just north/west of them, not visible
from 79.

On ag field along Rt 79, north side of 79 and first ag field past the
Lindermere apartments. Flock of Canada geese gleaning and a few snow geese,
maybe a handful, mixed in.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow geese iin Enfield, plus blackbirds

2022-02-25 Thread Barbara Bauer Sadovnic
A few snow geese flew over us in Enfield (Halseyville and Aiken) this
afternoon, flying fairly low. I didn't get a good look, because it was
snowing! They were turning, and I think ended up headed northeast of us.

And this morning, we also had a flock of about 80 mixed blackbirds, mostly
adult male redwings, with a few first summer males, and a couple grackles.

No guarantee on seeing Snow geese tomorrow, but worth a try. They are often
here today and gone tomorrow.

But others reported a few of them, days ago, so good to look around.

I did see lots of Canadas & lots of ducks.
Northern Pintails & Shovelers at MNWR visitors Ctr & other areas.

Large bunch Aythyas in middle of Cayuga L. North end off Lower Lake Rd. /Cay.

Did the snow geese Alyssa saw from Lower Lake Rd. in the middle of the day
today stick around? Are there sand hill cranes anywhere? Planning to wander

[cayugabirds-l] Snow geese

2021-03-20 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
2 very large rafts of snow geese on the Cayuga lake viewed from the state park
and lower lake road. VERY conservative estimate is 200k but the heat shimmer
and water makes it hard to see.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese on Cayuga Lake

2021-03-19 Thread Geo Kloppel
West Danby: Around 1:00 pm I saw a number of flocks of Snow Geese just
entering the Cayuga Basin from the south. Not sure how extensive the flight
was, but that mid-day timing always suggests a dawn origin in the coastal
regions to our south. So, not entirely over yet!

Can confirm! No where near the numbers we had on 3/17 (conservatively 400,000),
but there are two large rafts on the lake as of 5:20pm. One raft can be viewed
from Cayuga Lake SP and the larger group viewed from Wolffy’s Grill &
Marina/Lower Lake Rd.

The may be the last weekend to see them, I hope all who want to, get to!

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese?

2021-03-19 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
Check the east side of the lake between Cayuga and Union Springs. Some folks
who came into the MAC told us they saw them across the lake from Cayuga Lake
SP. I've also seen in a hunting group I'm in, that they've been seen in the air
over Auburn. I'm not sure if they are leaving us yet, we already thought that
once, and then BAM! St Patrick's Day we got lucky.

None (to my knowledge) have been seen on the ground in the Montezuma Wetlands
Complex today. Possible there's some way out in the Main Pool at the refuge,
but they're hard to see unless the take flight.

We are seeing big numbers of Northern Pintail right now, check out Sandhill
Crane Unit on Van Dyne Spoor Road, the wetlands in front of DEC Office on
Morgan Road, and May's Point off 89.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Snow geese and bald Eagles

2021-03-17 Thread Nancy Cusumano
They were all heading north as we were leaving, like half as many on the water
as wine we arrived. Will the come back south again tomorrow, or keep goin?
Anyone want to guess?

It was a truly amazing sight and sounds. The amount of birds in the air at any
one time made it look like the sky was fluttering.

We received a count from a very experienced birder after I left the area, he
estimated 400,000! I came back a few hours later in the afternoon and the flock
had definitely grown from when I saw it around 11:30 am.

Magical.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Geese, ducks

2021-03-11 Thread Lois E. Chaplin
I took a quick trip up the east side of the lake and then down to the State
Park. The usual sites were quiet. When I had a view of the lake I could see
white rafts in the middle. The water at the visitor center is opening up and
there were a lot of Canada Geese and a variety of ducks.

Down to the park - there is still ice at the marina/dock. The ice shelf at the
shore line further south has melted. I had a pleasant viewing experience of
several Gadwalls close to the shore with a variety of other ducks bobbing
around. The two rafts of Snow Geese were moving around a fair amount.

There was a gathering of Snow Geese on the ice at Knox-Marcellus and a flock
flitting around on the north side of 31 at the Potato Fields.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] snow geese...?

2021-03-11 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
Don't be fooled by the "snow geese" on the south side of Route 31, there is a
large spread of decoys in front of a hunting blind there. Much of the land on
either side of the road is privately owned (except for the eastern-most portion
along the Seneca River, that's USFWS owned). There is also another spread of
decoys between the split of 31/89 and East Road, on Route 89, northern side of
the road. I've been tricked before!

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] snow geese...?

After an enjoyable counting of bald eagles at Onondaga Lake this morning I
drove across to Montezuma Wildlife Refuge. On Rt. 31 mucklands there were large
numbers of snow geese on the south side of the road as well as many more
landing further north but out of sight range.

At Carncross Rd. there were many Canada geese and some ducks on the front
waters, but many snow geese were behind them on other open water stretches.

Hopefully they will be in closer viewing range in the coming days.
