Re: [cayugabirds-l] Swan Pen Yellow-rumped Warbler
Kevin pointed out another Yellow-rumped Warbler yesterday up here on the North Wilson side of the Sapsucker Pond, but I only heard it then. Today, I heard then caught up with it for some good looks. This is FYI for Sapsucker Woods walkers this weekend. It was near the beaver exclosure cage both days. [cayugabirds-l] Swan pen
On the principle that too much location info _is_ better than not enough, I'd like to remind anyone who cares (and inform anyone who might not know) that the so-called swan pen is actually the Louis Agassiz Fuertes Memorial Bird Sanctuary. Nowadays we tend to reserve the words Bird Sanctuary for more extensive properties, but this little hotspot at Stewart Park was designed, constructed and dedicated in memory of Fuertes by folks who knew him and lamented his untimely death. -Geo -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Swan Pen loop closed at Stewart
Despite the closure of the swan pen trail, I was able to find the continuing AUDUBON'S WARBLER on both of two quick checks this morning, once around 8:40 and once around 9:15. It was along the same area where we first found it, the bushes the run along the back of the boathouse from near the creek to the little stone overlook platform. It was also chipping today, which could be a help in finding it, as their call note is quite different from Myrtles'. Also, the SANDERLING was still on the spit at Myers Point this morning, but not the Dunlin. -Jay On Mon, Apr 22, 2013 at 10:31 AM, Lee Ann van Leer l...@earthlink.netwrote: Dropped by to take a VERY quick look at swan pen but both entrances blocked with danger do not cross tape. Path Reopened Re: [cayugabirds-l] Swan Pen loop closed at Stewart
Perhaps my message wasn't interpreted correctly. The swan pen path had been closed. They had it closed off with red tape that requested...DO NOT CROSS until they could eliminate whatever conditions they deemed unsafe. I'm not deterred by fallen trees. I was deterred by risk of getting a ticket for limboing under their red tape. LOL. It would be just my luck and I'd rather not annoy those that felt it necessary to close the path. :-) I'm happy they reopened the path promptly. I also am glad that hear that all the birders escaped the falling tower of boats that was blown by high winds nearly on top of them on this same path a few days ago. I heard it was a narrow escape! -- -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] Swan Pen/Jetty Woods
On a walk around the Swan Pen and then through Jetty Woods this morning I came up with a few good birds. Both Yellow Warblers and Yellow-rumped Warblers were singing on the trail around the Pen, giving me a good chance to listen to the differences between their songs - which at times sounded quite similar. 4 Yellow Warblers, 4 Yellow-rumps, and 2 (eastern) Palm Warblers. Over in Jetty Woods there was a pair of Rusty Blackbirds, just in from the pumphouse. The male was displaying to the female. Ringing out over all was a Carolina Wren. And moving from log to log in the wet channel just across from the Rustys was a Green Heron. Re:[cayugabirds-l] Swan pen Nashville Warbler
I was at the Swan Pen around noon, and ran into several other birders including a woman who described a bird to me that we never actually saw. In retrospect the description she gave fits Nashville W. perfectly. Given how good her description was I badly miss IDed it at the time, my mind was in too many places at once...but I am now confident that her description was of Nashvillethe point being that the bird was almost assuredly there before noon. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Swan Pen/Jetty Woods
I must have just missed Bob, but saw and heard the same warblers while walking the path around the swan pen. Also singing were numerous house sparrows, redwings, robins, starlings, and a N. Cardinal. Several Northern Rough-winged and numerous Tree Swallows were catching insects over the water and a chattering kingfisher circled the pond and flew off. I must have come right after a hatch of gnats as a cloud of them swarmed around me as I followed the warblers around the pond. Several Canada Geese are nesting along the northern edge of the pen with protective males fiercely hissing at passersby. Above one nest, a trio of bright N. Flickers noisily challenged each other atop a large cottonwood. Their yellow under-wings were flashing brilliant yellow as they flew around each other loudly squawking and trading places on the limb. Six pairs of Lesser Scaup and a pair of Bufflehead were resting just off shore in the placid lake along with numerous Canada Geese and mallards. A predominantly white-bodied hybrid mallard was also among the mix. It was a pleasant interlude on this drizzly, dank day.
