I haven't been to Summerhill in several months and thought this would
be the perfect afternoon to take a walk up Salt Road. It was REALLY
quiet! After 2+ miles of walking, I came up with only a few
Chickadees, two Red-breasted Nuthatches, a calling Pileated
Woodpecker, and one Blue Jay. The first surprise was a flock of some
20 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS flying over, headed SE and calling. The
second surprise was a late HERMIT THRUSH in the winterberry bushes
about 500m south of Hoag Ave.
Overall, the cone crop looks to be thin, with some second year cones
on Norway spruces, ditto for the white spruces. The larch seemed to be
cone-less, and I did not check the red pines or hemlocks. I can only
hope that a few Red Crossbills will find enough food to hang out for a
while this winter.
