[cayugabirds-l] Western Tanager in Wee Stinky Glen

It's still here. I just saw it (and reported to eBird) in the tallest tree
across from the semi-circle of benches between Day Hall and Sage Hall.

[cayugabirds-l] Western Tanager

2016-03-19 Thread Cynthia Marino
thanks everyone for the tips and advice on locating the bird. We found it
easily and got nice close views, as it popped in and out of the yew shrubs
near the entrance to the Cornell campus store. This was between 12:30 and
1:00 pm today.

There is no restriction so as to use of the lenses and tripods on the campus.
I think so as long as you are not harassing the bird. It is only ethical
question. If you see the bird is getting stressed then you stop.

smallish trees just west of the benches in Wee Stinky Glen. He was
eating some of the dessicated fruit in one tree (crab apple?), then went
down to the water to get a drink, then flew back up and spent quite
awhile in the tree with small yellow flowers (cornellian cherry?)
preening and sunning himself. When he isn't moving, he can be
surprisingly hard to spot - only his breast is brightly colored - but he
is completely lovely!

Thanks also to Vanessa Ng who posted such a great description of the
pattern of his movements a week or two ago - he must have read her post,

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Western tanager still here

2016-03-18 Thread Donna Lee Scott
At 4 PM yesterday (thur.) Dave Fitch (from Liverpool) and I found the WESTERN
TANAGER in a tall Wee Stinky Glen tree close to the sidewalk that runs between
the creek and the berm over the campus store. It was eating a lot of dull
orange dried fruit in the tree. I don't think that tall a tree could be a crab
apple, so I don't know what kind of tree it is. (But I am no tree expert).
I agree with Alicia, that the bird is hard to spot and ID when he is sitting
still.
We got good looks by standing on top of the berm over the underground Cornell
Store.

The Western Tanager was present outside of Day Hall just after noon today
(Thursday, March 10). It took a while, but it eventually made an appearance
with the House Sparrows visiting the seeds on a window ledge on Day Hall, then
it disappeared into the conifers by the College store.

Thanks to everyone for posting about this bird, it was a treat to see it!

Good birding,

It flew down towards the trees in Wee Stinky Glen where I lost track of it.  A

[cayugabirds-l] Western Tanager at Day Hall Cornell

2016-03-06 Thread Donna Lee Scott
My posted message from 4 PM seems to have been lost in cyberspace...

Around 4 PM today (Sun.) I and others (Sandy, Bruce) got good looks at the
WESTERN TANAGER in areas around the west side of Day Hall on the Cornell Campus.
The bird:
sat in a short tree by the SW door of Day Hall,
flew a few times into the spruce trees above the alcove entrance to the
underground Cornell Store,
flew 2 times down into the Cornell Store entrance alcove and ate dried dark
blue fruits off the pavement and off the vines on wall,
flew up to the wall over the entrance doors to the store, then hopped down onto
the lawn behind that wall.

It chased away House Sparrows that were trying to get the food it was eating.

[cayugabirds-l] Western tanager remains

2016-03-05 Thread M & K Mannella
I trekked to campus this afternoon, along with Rueben Stoltzfus and his family,
to see the Western Tanager. We found it (life bird for Reuben) in the same
location, moving from behind the yews to the alcove at the store entrance
eating where someone had placed a handful of sunflower seeds on the ground near
a wall of ivy.

It is quite tolerant of people, and stayed in one location for a good five
minutes or so, and provides excellent close views. At one point we were no more
than a few feet away looking over the wall into the yews.

We were able to make out some orange showing around the eyes, on the forehead,
and around the beak.

[cayugabirds-l] Western tanager present at 10:30am, Cornell Campus

2016-02-28 Thread Nari Mistry
The Western Tanager was flitting around eating fruits from all the trees
around the small Glen near Day Hall and the Campus store. We were there
from ~10am to 10:30am. During that time many more birders came around
and the friendly bird seemed to want to visit every group in turn right
up close, to within a few feet. A flock of Cedar Waxwings came in for
the fruit too , but the Tanager seemed happy to share with them.

After we took a walk around Campus & Johnson Museum we walked back
through the glen at about 12:30pm and did not see the bird or any
birders. We did not look too carefully everywhere, so we hope it's still
around.

[cayugabirds-l] Western Tanager

2016-02-26 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,

It is in the vicinity still. But seem to be feeling cold so trying to hide from
the wind by taking shelter next to wall. Once a couple of people walked within
two feet of the bird but it was hanging around in the same location with a
little bit of movement.

We saw it eating two kinds of berries. One was climbing ivy berries, which
seems to be abundant in that area on the building walls.

It frequents the area near the back entrance of Day Hall, Campus store east
entrance, and Olin Library south wall.

Next few days are warmer, so hope the bird feels comfortable.

Cheers

[cayugabirds-l] Western Tanager - Cornell University Campus

2016-02-25 Thread Christopher T. Tessaglia-Hymes
Not seen posted yet, but I thought I’d pass along word that a Western Tanager
has been seen and photographed hopping around the ground behind Day Hall on
central Cornell University Campus.

I don’t have many other details, but saw it posted to the text RBA.

Sincerely,
Chris T-H
