Re: [cayugabirds-l] White-winged Crossbill, Enfield
Hi all, This morning a received an email from the homeowner hosting the crossbill in Enfield. She asked me to relay to the list that, while she is very much in favor of bird enthusiasm (and did not call the sheriff on Gary), she feels very uncomfortable having people park near her house and look into her windows with binoculars, which is hard to avoid given the placement of the feeder in question. It's a difficult situation and we can't tell anyone not to drive on a public road, but please, if you are considering looking for this bird, keep your distance and wait for the bird to appear in a more neutral location, perhaps in the larch stand farther west on the road. It flew in and landed in a tree between Sheffield Road and Hedgerow Drive. It stayed there calling for several minutes, then flew up to a tamarack to feed. We did not see it visit the feeder, but it has apparently been coming for several days. Its head and upperparts were quite red, but the underparts were brownish and streaked. [cayugabirds-l] White-winged Crossbill
After reading a report of a Snowy Owl at St Simon's Island, GA of all places (we've not had many reports in the NE) we went to the window and Sue spotted a male White-winged Crossbill on the seed trays of our sunflower tube feeders! It's so unusual to see just one as they tend to flock but one's more than enough for a thrill! He stayed about two hours and hasn't returned as yet today. [cayugabirds-l] White-winged Crossbill
Hi all, The House Finches that rediscovered our feeding station in Horseheads about a week ago were joined by a single WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL this morning. While the finches came to the feeder, the crossbill moved to the spruce trees, though I never noticed him feeding on the abundant cone crop. Might be worth re-reading this story about crossbills, written during their irruption in 2008-09: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/got-white-winged-crossbills Good birding, Mike -- Mike Powers Horseheads, Chemung Co., NY -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

This morning I had a single White-winged Crossbill flyover calling at Monkey Run (but not from the yard).
