[cayugabirds-l] YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER

2021-06-17 Thread Jill Vaughan
This evening a friend and I watched from my porch a YBS going back and forth
between the peanut and suet feeders. When I first saw it, I went on All About
Birds and also brought out the Crossley Guide for us to more clearly see the
striking difference between this bird and a Downy or Hairy. I saw a YBS here
last summer, but it did not stay around long. The bird this evening liked the
"upside down suet feeder."

I have been away for over a week, and am sure my return disappointed the
EASTERN PHOEBE already sitting eggs in her porch light nest (side porch). I
will figure out a different route to the clothesline.

remember reports of any over-wintering here on the west side of Ovid before
this year, and there is only one report in eBird for Dec-Feb in the Seneca
drainage of Ovid before 2021 (assuming Dave Kennedy was on the Ovid side of the
line in Willard Town Park when he made his report in 2018).

There seems to be numerous reports of sapsuckers in CNY this winter. In my
thirty plus years living here I don't recall ever seeing one in the winter.
Here in McGraw I have one visiting my feeders for the past few weeks. How
common is it for them to winter in our area?

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

2020-04-11 Thread W Larry Hymes
This morning we had a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER on our lilac outside our
kitchen window. Gorgeous bird.

I thought I had reported last week, but we had two FOX SPARROWS,
scritchy-scratching on the ground. We also SAW a CHIPPING SPARROW, rather than
HEARD (as I had reported on August 26th).

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-bellied sapsucker

2016-12-16 Thread Laura J. Heisey
I believe I spotted a yellow-bellied sapsucker at my feeders in Newfield this
afternoon. I could only see its back and head, and while I haven't seen many

it wasn't any of the usual visitors.

I heard them in the woods nearby this spring and summer, but is it possible
that any stuck around?

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-bellied Sapsucker behavior around a nest

2016-05-10 Thread Jody W Enck
Hi All,

Every once in a while I am fortunate enough to be able to conduct a
30-minute stationary count during mid-day at a point in about the middle of the
woods adjacent to my house. Today was one of those days, and my count was the
47th half-hour count at that site since the beginning of April. I have seen a
lot of that 23.5 hours of observation at the same place in the woods over the
last five-plus week. I want to pass along a bit of natural history I observed
today.

I’ve had the great fortune of watching a pair of Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers
establish a territory that virtually centers on my point count location. Over
the course of about two weeks, I watched as they took turns excavating a new
cavity on a Red Maple branch that already had eight woodpecker holes in it.
Indeed, they chased away a pair of White-breasted Nuthatches that seemed to
want to use one of the smaller holes on the back side of the branch. The new
Sapsucker cavity was constructed on the branch facing my count point and only
about 20 yards away.

As excavation neared completion, I almost laughed out loud watching the
male appear from inside the cavity with mouthfuls of woodchips, spit them out
in a shower, and disappear back inside for another mouthful. In addition to
watching nest excavation, I have witnessed neat interactions between the pair,
including lots and lots of soft mews and other vocalizations I doubt I had ever
heard. Twice I witnessed the female visit the presumably completed nest,
disappear inside for a couple of minutes and then depart again. Once, she sat
just outside the cavity and preened for over 10 minutes before going inside for
a couple minutes, then emerging and flying away. Perhaps she was laying an egg
at those times.

Today, I did my count from 1:45 to 2:15pm. At 1:57, I saw the female
emerge from the cavity (I did not know she was in there), and fly to a tree
about 50 yards away. She defecated almost on top of me as she flew over my
head, suggesting to me that she might have been in the cavity for a while.
When she landed, she issued on soft mew call that was returned from somewhere
just out of site in another direction. After two minutes, the male flew to the
cavity, looked inside, then flew away out of view. At 2:06, the female return
and sat preening right outside the nest cavity. Then at 2:10 she disappeared
inside the nest.

 May there nest be successful.

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Campus ducks

2011-04-07 Thread Jay McGowan
I'm surprised I have seen one before now, but there is a YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER tapping and flying around in the woods just south of the main
entrance at the Lab of Ornithology at Sapsucker Woods.

Not too much of note on Dryden Lake this morning, but 4 COMMON LOONS and two
HORNED GREBES were there. Yesterday an immature BALD EAGLE was sitting on
the ice in the morning. George Road was also pretty quiet this morning
(three Horned Grebes remain), but on Beebe Lake I had a flock of ducks land
briefly that included 2 male AMERICAN WIGEON, 1 female GREEN-WINGED TEAL,
and half a dozen Mallards. Two PIED-BILLED GREBES were still along the
south shore.

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

2011-01-30 Thread Marla Coppolino
Yesterday and this morning there is a juvenile YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at
my suet feeder. I typically get all the regular woodpeckers at my feeders,
but this is the first time to have a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker here in
January.

2011-01-30 Thread Kenneth Victor Rosenberg
Marla,

On the Cortland Christmas Bird Count on December 18, we found a Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker in the St. Anthony's cemetery on the hill above town of Groton. It
was an immature bird that was still fairly brownish and had a white throat
(female). I'm wondering if you are near there and if this could be the same
bird?

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

2011-01-30 Thread Marla Coppolino
Yes, the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker at my feeders was female, immature, and
with the brownish feathers. I live within 5 miles of St. Anthony's cemetery
(actually less, as the Sapsucker flies), so it could very well be the same
bird that you saw.

Someone who lives near upper Treman Park contacted me off-list to say that
she has had a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker at her feeder all winter.
