4 bald eagles soaring over Walmart parking lot and up hill to the east. One was 
much lower and right over the parking lot, it was an immature.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagles on Blakslee Hill Rd in Newfield

On my way up the hill from Rt 96/34 I saw a bald eagle in a tree and
then another one perched above the road. The second was an immature
eagle and it took off up the road, I followed it up the road driving
somewhat slowly. It flew about 90 meters along the tree covered
street, sometimes only 6-8' above the pavement before finding an
appropriate perch. Lucky no one was coming fast down the hill.

 What a view of the eagle in flight, and I hope it learns to avoid
roads.

 Wondering what this portends for me...

2 mature B Eagles just flew over lake end of Algerine rd. Lansing.
White throated sparrows, juncos & house sparrows bathing & drinking in a little 
pool in a small stream that finally has water.
 Blue Jays & TVs around by Cayuga lake.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagles at Conowingo Dam

First , Happy thanksgiving to every one.

I am thinking of taking a trip to Conowingo MD to see the Bald Eagles 
who come by the hundreds to fish at the dam there, also there are 
thousands of Gulls.
It is a 4 1/2 hour trip one way and will be a long day, leaving at 6:00 
AM and returning that evening.   We will stop for lunch on the way and 
again on the way back.
I am thinking that Sat. Dec. 1st would be a good day. The weather is 
forecast to be clear and in the mid 50s.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald eagles ... adult & juveniles 1/16/17

This a.m. Becky & I saw 2 juvenile bald eagles flying along the shore 
just north of the  village of Cayuga.


We also saw 2 adult bald eagles in the trees next to the nesting tree at 
Mud Lock north of Cayuga.


Along Martin Rd. south of Seneca Falls, Becky spotted a male pheasant 
feeding in the cornfield  along the road & pointed it out to several 
other birders. We also saw a Snowy atop Lott's grain elevator/silo. 
Didn't take time to look for more as we were already late on our way to 
Corning.  Several other birders, including one man from Buffalo, were 
cruising about looking for the owls & the gyrfalcon. Great day to be out 
birding.

A no scope stop at Lake Rd yesterday afternoon revealed a huge raft of mixed 
Athyas,
mostly Redheads, stretching from the mid point of Lake Rd to just short of 
Canoga;
all were in mid-lake. No ice other than huge rafts visible on the eastern shore.
Many Tundra and a few Trumpeter swans were all along the lake, Snow geese mostly
near the eastern shore and other species of duck ( common both large mergs,
bufflehead, blacks, mallards dotted along the lakefront. Fowl became sparse by 
the
boat launch and south through Wyers Point.

The highlight was 7 Bald Eagles fishing and playing on the wind just at the 
south
end of Lake rd. We watched for quite awhile at close range. At one point, three
detached and flew at us with the lead bird carrying a huge fish and passing 
between
our vehicle and a tree on the west side of the road! Of the seven, five were 
adult.

For those unfamiliar, Lake Rd and Lower Lake Rd run along the water just off SR 
79
from just south of the State Park to the old pump house area south of the RR 
bed.

...Did later show up to grab one of the dead birds in the ice-chunk/water edge 
of the big ice sheet here at Lans. Stat. Rd. 

An adult BALD EAGLE swooped around to check out the floating body, then grabbed 
it on the third pass. It flew back south a short way  landed on the ice where 
it started picking at the carcass. 

By the time I grabbed my scope  got to back deck  re-found the eagle, it was 
standing near the carcass while an immature eagle stood on carcass pulling it 
apart  eating pieces of it. The adult now  then would eat a little meat that 
got flung onto ice. 

After watching this for awhile,  Wanting to try determining approx. age of 
immature I ran in house for bird book. By the time I did that  1 other 
unnecessary chore  got back to scope, the adult eagle had disappeared and 2 
immatures were at the carcass, most of which seemed gone (they were at least 
half a mile from me). 

Looking at both Sibley's field guide  Crossley's raptor ID Guide, i would say 
the immatures were 2nd year birds. 

They had dull-whitish feathers on top of heads and in sort of a wedge down the 
back of their necks. Had brown on sides of faces and some white streaks on 
their backs. I did not note how chests/belly looked, but maybe they were 
lightly streaked. 
I do not think they had the lighter eyes and light sides of faces that pix of 
3-years show.

[cayugabirds-l] bald eagles

A colleague of mine just sent me some photos he took last Friday of bald eagles 
on the ice on Cayuga lake. One shot showed 6 eagles (1 adult and 5 juveniles). 
Four of the juveniles were clearly all trying to get their share of the same 
meal, complete with some in-air clashes. Taken from a house on Powers Rd., on 
the east shore a couple of miles north of the Cayuga Station power plant.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald eagles and tundra swans on frozen Cayuga Lake

We are about a mile north of the Ithaca Yacht Club and awoke this morning to 
find Cayuga Lake frozen all the way across the lake.  There were five white 
bumps on the ice in front of our house that turned out to be tundra swans.  
They did not move one bit until about noon.  Two have left but three white 
bumps remain.  About 30 yards away from the swans there are three juvenile and 
one adult bald eagle snacking on duck parts they have pulled out of the ice.   
Each time an eagle flies over, three tundra swan heads appear above the white 
bumps!

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagles at Game Farm

I made a stop of the Game Farm this morning and ended up not counting crows or 
looking for rare gulls.  Instead I spent an hour photographing a pair of BALD 
EAGLES. They were perched together in a large bare tree along the west side of 
Dodge Road, just south of Stevenson Rd. One appeared to be a full adult, the 
other still had a black mask and some dark in the tail, but looked adult from a 
distance.

While I was watching the younger bird dashed to the Game Farm and came right 
back with a large Norway rat in its talons. Then it sat and dismembered and ate 
the rat in the tree right next to the road as the other eagle, the crows, and I 
watched.

We’re assuming you are in the Cayuga Basin, but not sure where. Near open water?
That sounds like a good description of BALD EAGLE as Turkey Vulture would not 
show a light/white head or tail  but would be large and dark bodied.

We see Bald Eagles nearly every day here on the western shore of Cayuga
Lake, about 25 miles north of Ithaca. They are usually cruising along
searching for an injured or unwary duck. When we see the flock of ducks
suddenly take off we look up for the eagle and he/she is almost always
swinging by. Lately we have usually seen an immature, and this morning
she/he was perched on a tree in front of our house. A very large bird!

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagles for (during) lunch

Hi all,

I had three adult  Bald Eagles circling over Mundy during lunch time. One of 
them came fairly low enough to admire its beauty and the other two were also 
quite nicely visible. Then they gained height on the thermals and headed south 
westerly direction along with some TVs.

Also in Mundy, I saw two Pileated Woodpeckers together along with two Am. 
Robins.



In the morning on the way to work along east Ithaca recreation way and in 
Strawberry Hill area I saw several Cedar Waxwings, and hundred plus American 
Robins and a Carolina Wren. This year Crabapple crop seems to be not very good.

Re:  Dave's post of last evening, we have seen a juvenile Bald Eagle along
Elm Beach Road since early May. The heavy rains washed a large tree down
one of the creeks, and s/he has been visiting that occasionally. When
finished with his-or-her check of the neighborhood, s/he heads south. We
have seen adult BE's in the trees between Elm Beach and Sheldrake, and have
assumed that the juvenile belongs to that clan.

On another note, I haven't posted about the RTH nest for some weeks. Once
the leaves came out the nest was completely hidden. However, in the last
ten days I've heard what I take to be two individual fledglings ordering up
lunch when I walk the dogs up the hill. Yesterday a solitary adult was also
calling out intermittently.

 below. Both appeard very fat  hump-backed as they fed, with a pronounced
 concavity between the back and rear end (possibly indicating Long-billed).

My friend saw two mature Bald Eagles this morning around 10:30 am in
Montour Falls, right off 224 flying low up the creek. Yesterday we were
in Montezuma Preserve and saw hundreds if not thousands of snow geese in
the early afternoon.

Yesterday morning (around 9:30am) I saw Bald Eagles apparently working on a 
nest at the SW end of Michigan Hollow Road just south of West Danby.Is that 
a known nesting site?

I also heard my first konkareee of a red-wing blackbird there at the same 
time.   A beautiful way to end February and move into March.

Hi Kim:

I live near that area. Bald Eagles have successfully nested in that location 
for at least the past 2 years. There were previous nesting attempts during 
2008-2010, but I can't confirm whether they were successful.

In past years the pair has left the area during the non-breeding season; 
however, this year they seem to have remained, as I have seen them numerous 
times throughout the fall and winter. In late December/early January they were 
regularly seen feeding on a road-killed deer just north of Spencer.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagles nesting again in Ulysses

For the 4th year Bald Eagles are nesting in Tompkins County on the west side of the lake. Knowing exactly where to set up my scope, this afternoon (14 February) I was able to look between branches of the high, deep nest and see the yellow-orange bill changing position against the white of the incubating adult's head. I don't recall ever seeing an adult in the open near this nest. I think they are shy. Later in the season when the youngsters step out of the nest there is better viewing, but the adults seem to stay away whenever I'm looking. I'm glad to see the nest is in use again because during last year's nesting season the adjacent land was deforested and a large house constructed. That house is now occupied, and I feared the birds would not come back. They've fledged 2 young each of the last 3 years (at least), although last year one of the juveniles was injured on nearby NYS-89 and captured to be rehabbed. Does anyone know the fate of that bird?--Dave Nutter

A posting a few days back mentioned that the Bald Eagles at Mud Lock were about 
to fledge their young.  That encouraged me to arise before dawn to check on the 
status of the nest along the Chemung River just west of Corning.  (Yes, way out 
of basin.) I’ve been following their progress since I first saw one of the 
adults on the nest on  February 13.  On February one was holding tight in the 
nest as snow swirled about.

There are now two chicks, and they are looking pretty close to adult size.  
I’ve seen no testing of their wings such as I expect immediately before leaving 
the nest.  By 6:15 am, I could see on chick moving in the nest but no adults.  
At 6:30 am, the two adults appeared from a nearby roost with one perching near 
the nest and the other taking a fishing perch about 1/4 mile west. By 7 am, the 
closest adult which I presume is the female, began to take fishing roost along 
the river. (I did confirm two chicks active in the nest.) I saw the female make 
a pass at what looked like a muskrat in the river; it ran up the bank into 
cover.  The other worked out of sight west along the river and returned to the 
nest with a small catch at 7:20 pm.  It did not linger. Slow fishing day. Then 
about 7:35 am, the female caught  a midsize carp near the Patterson Bridge and 
brought it to the nest where she stayed only briefly before return to the 
Corning side to fish. It is not possible to see in the nest itself. 

As I thought about the eagles’ early beginning on the nest, and how that 
produced the peak demand on them to provide food for two full size “chicks” in 
late May, I realized the fortunate coincidence in late May with the carp going 
into the shallows to spawn.  When the carp spawning is over in early June, 
catching a lot of fish becomes more difficult.  Still, the availability of food 
has increased greatly from when they first had chicks. 

As I note, I first found this nest last year and they had at that time two 
young who fledged successfully.  Did not record the date. I last saw one of 
their juveniles on April 13 when one of the juveniles flew close to the adult 
as it fished over the river near the nest. I last saw the juvenile heading 
north (towards Watkins Glen) with the adult close on its tail and decidedly 
unfriendly. 

Hope to hear some details about other eagle nests as they begin to fledge.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagles at my house- WOW

I was doing a little yard work and I heard a VERY loud whsh.
I looked and I saw an adult bald eagle chasing another adult across my
yard into my neighbor's yard BELOW tree top level They must have
been barely 20 feet off the ground. I was afraid they would crash into
something. Then I look up and there were 4 more bald eagles
rising into a thermal...eventually the two low flying eagles joined
this kettle...so I had 6 bald eagles in a kettle for several minutes over
my house. Eventually I lost them off to the northeast so they
were migratory. There were 4 adults and 2 immatures. amazingwow!

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagles on Dryden Lake

Hello,
I am new to this list. I kayak 4 - 5 times per week on Dryden Lake and 
toward the middle of July I saw one adult Bald eagle almost every time I 
was out. Then 8/17 I saw two Bald Eagles flying at the same time about 
5:15pm. How exciting! One was mature and the other was a large young 
one. There were both there on Thursday, too.I have not seen any nest. 
The adult was even on the lake the morning after the fireworks show. The 
adult enjoys flying over the kayak about 15 feet up.  This morning I was 
on the lake and watched the eagle catch a fish just before the lightning 
storm hit.
There are several pair of green herons, bitterns and of course great 
blue herons. There are many belted kingfishers, also. I have not seen 
any osprey.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagles Wintering

At least 2 adult Bald Eagles are wintering here in the Spencer, NY  
(Tioga County) area.  I think they are the same pair that have been  
reported and photographed in the immediate area since last October.


I have 2 questions-

#1-  What is known about feeding range in this area?

#2-  Who is interested in detailed reports?
