[cayugabirds-l] Black vulture
This morning at around 8:30 there was a single Black Vulture at the Tompkins County recycling center (there may have been others as there was a tree of vultures out behind the center). What I found interesting is where the black vulture was. It was sitting on top of the Fork Over Tompkins trailer doing its best to tear out the top vent. I don't know if there were any food scarps left in the trailer, but I am sure it was emanating an wonderful odor. The vulture was using its beak to try to pry through the slats of the vent as well as hooking its bill under them and trying to rip it up. In the few minutes I watched, it was not been successful in the least. Closer to home in Freeville, Chipping Sparrows, Eastern Towhee, and House Wren are all back on territory. Ruby-crowned Kinglets have been around for a few days as well. A pair of Juncos has been busy rejuvenating a previous years nest. -Andrew Miller -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

I got a close look and think I just sighted one. My first, and I see in my guidebook that they are not common around here but are becoming more common. It is heading south around 11:30am. [cayugabirds-l] Black Vulture at compost piles, etc.
Hi all, This afternoon, a BLACK VULTURE showed up over the compost piles at Game Farm Road. It circled for a while, then drifted to the northeast. Thanks to Jay's post, Brian Magnier and myself were also able to find the Short-eared owls at Scofield Road near Buck Road. We counted five at once, but there could have been more. Also had a couple of late Savannah sparrows there along the roadside. [cayugabirds-l] Black Vulture on Stevenson, Clay-colored Sparrow still on campus
At 2:30 today I was just finishing up an hour crow watch at the Cornell compost facility on Stevenson Road when I noticed that an incoming vulture was a BLACK VULTURE: short tail, flat and broad wings, and white patches in the primaries. It then landed in the big lone snag, with 8 Turkey Vultures. It was easily visible from Stevenson Road. Nothing else of note in the compost. The ponds have been drained enough that little shorebird habitat remains. 2 Killdeer were the shorebird total today. Earlier around noon I went to Cornell campus to see if I could find the CLAY-COLORED SPARROW that everyone else saw in the spring. I found it in the trees on the south side of Goldwyn-Smith, between there and Stimson Hall. It sang softly a few times and I was able to get a good look. Neither it nor the Chipping Sparrow in the same area seemed to be feeding young. But, the Chipping Sparrow family just to the north was feeding a fledgling Brown-headed Cowbird. I saw 13 bird species on the Arts Quad, including a fly-over pair of calling MERLINS. Kevin Kevin J. [cayugabirds-l] black vulture
I was out in our front yard shortly after 7 PM looking for nighthawks when I noticed a large, dark bird far to the SE. It was coming slowly toward me and against the air flow (clouds moving from the NW). It got fairly close, then suddenly turned about and headed back the way it had come. I noted periods of soaring alternating with several flaps of its wings. In soaring, the wings were held at only a slight dihedral and came straight out from the body, not hunched like in turkey vultures. At a distance, I initially thought great blue heron, but decided the wingbeats were more rapid than I would expect to see with the heron. Unfortunately this is not a new yard bird, as Susie saw one last year here in the Spring. I was in the front yard doing yardwork, looked up, and noted a small kettle of vultures over the house. Called the wife out. The BLACK VULTURE stayed in a large willow on the grounds of #86 Oakcrest (but best viewed from mailbox #77) for about an hour after I found it and immediately sent out the alert. During that hour I did one taxi run, returned to find Gary Kohlenberg and Jay Kevin McGowan soon joined by a guy whose name I should know (Dave McCartt?) all aiming scopes and cameras at the bird. I left to do another taxi run, then wondered why Ann Mitchell, who works close by, hadn't shown up. I fetched her, but the perch was empty, and we found Mark Chao staring after only TURKEY VULTURES, several of which remained in the area. They were soon joined by Tim Lenz, Jeff Gerbracht, and another guy I didn't recognize. I had to leave to pick up another passenger, and when I drove past with my fare, all birders appeared to be leaving having given up. I think odds are very high it is still around and may be found again tomorrow. --Dave NutterOn Jan 28, 2011, at 08:47 AM, bob mcguire bmcgu...@clarityconnect.com wrote:I was sitting in the parking lot just east of the Ithaca Mall when, at 9:23 this morning the first of nine vultures flew low overhead, from south to north. My suggestion for tomorrow would be to hang out in the Mall parking lot - or the lot just to the east (behind what used to be the roller rink) from 8:15 on. Eyes on the sky to the south. This morning the BLAVUL came over low. Then follow it to whatever perch or hunting grounds it chooses to the north. Susan, I had a black vulture last week in Johnson City. There were also a few reported in spring/summer in the Ithaca area. This species apparently continues to spread northward. Neat. Dave From: Susan Danskin dans...@twcny.rr.com To: CAYUGABIRDS CAYUGABIRDS-L@cornell.edu Sent: Tue, January 25, 2011 7:16:17 PM Subject: [cayugabirds-l] BLACK VULTURE Sorry Sorry Sorry. I thought sent this info to the rare bird alert, but I must not know what am I doing. I had to rush to send off the text before my students came into the classroom and caught me with an illegal device. Who knows what I did wrong, but tonight when I finally had a chance to check my phone, I realized that the incoming text that I thought was the one I had sent actually was one telling me that BLACK is reserved. Someday I'll figure out what I did wrong. Anyway, on to the story of the bird... A couple of days ago I was driving up Rt 13 somewhere near Triphammer and noticed some birds soaring off to my left. At least one and possibly two had the jizz of a Black Vulture (shorter tail, shorter wings, less dihedral than Turkey Vulture). Given that the lighting was bad, I was late for work, and going at least 60 mph, I soon put it out of my mind as just a trick of my eyes. But then again today I was driving up Rt 13 between Triphammer and Warren and again noticed three birds circling off to my left. Again at least one of the birds definitely had the jizz of a Black Vulture. This time the lighting was better, I wasn't so late for work, and I had the sense to take my lead foot off of the accelerator AND the bird was kind enough to bank just at the right time to show me its white wing tips. I am usually the first to doubt myself when I see something rare, but I am confident of this ID. I grew up in the Hudson Valley and have made many trips south so I have some decent experience with this bird. Keep your eye aimed at the sky the next time you are flying up Rt 13 around 8:45 am. [cayugabirds-l] Black Vulture - Dryden
Cayugabirders, Around 10 am today I saw one Black Vulture heading north slowly over the towers on Mount Pleasant (Town of Dryden) while I was checking Tree Swallow boxes. No idea if we have one bird hanging around or if multiple individuals are involved, but I suspect the latter. [cayugabirds-l] Black Vulture - Hawthorn Orchards - Sunday 5/16 10:00 AM
Nancy Chen and I enjoyed a nice but brief morning in the East Hill Orchards today. The highlight (for me - Nancy just got back from a month in Florida and was less excited) was prolonged looks at a soaring BLACK VULTURE immediately overhead for several minutes, then drifting off to the west. Other good birds around included 2 Tennessee Warblers, 1 Blackburnian Warbler, 3 Wilson's Warblers, and an Eastern Wood-Pewee. Full e-bird report below. Good Birding! [cayugabirds-l] Black Vulture, Peregrine Falcons and more
Bob Guthrie and I spent several hours today at Broadway Road, Wayne County watching the hawks. With the wind it was cold so I'm sorry to say we stayed in the car most of the time. We might have missed a few hawks this way but we still enjoyed the show. The Black Vulture came by at 1:15 pm. It was a close low bird and I first noticed the lighter tips to its wings. Then it was easy to see the very short blunt tail. Bob Guthrie got a photo of it which confirms the ID. It will be interesting to see if Derby Hill reports one today or tomorrow. The Peregrine came through early at 10:45 am and flew low over the road right in front of us. We were able to clearly see the face pattern. The second Peregrine Falcon we had later in the day 4:20 pm on our Eaton Bird Club trip to Van Dyne Spoor Road; it was sitting in the field. Then we watched it fly over many Northern Pintails and harass a Bald Eagle. I also saw 8 Northern Harriers, 2 Bald Eagles and a Red-tailed Hawk at this location. Then it started to rain so we didn't stay to see if any owls came out.
