Yesterday I heard my first meadowlark of the year but I couldn't locate it.
Today it is singing in the field across the street and I was able to watch it
for a while, a welcome splash of yellow in an otherwise brown field. I wonder
what birds will return next...

It seems early but I just saw an Eastern (I’m assuming) Meadowlark on Falls
road in Trumansburg one hundred yards from the edge of Smith Woods heading
East.

Bent says that Meadowlarks form roving bands in August, after the breeding
season is done, and that by mid-October most of these have left Ontario and
Quebec for points south. So it seems likely that migrants from north of the
border are now moving through our area.
Just flushed a MEADOWLARK, presumably EASTERN, from grassy ditch along Central
Chapel Rd. in Brooktondale.

At 4:00 this afternoon Driving north on Hall Road in Interlaken I was surprised
to see an Eastern Meadowlark perched on the telephone wire just after seeing a
KESTREL on a wire close by.
Yesterday we saw a bald eagle flying low over Interlaken on Rt 89 just a few
miles north of Sheldrake.

What a lovely sound! One MEADOWLARK singing in the field on Center road, south

flyover PURPLE FINCHES. At least 70 SONG SPARROWS singing and in flocks along
the roads sides. Also 6 WOODCOCK calling in the predawn.

Just located an E. MEADOWLARK singing from a treetop in a nearby field. That
is, I can see it singing, but it's too away for me to hear.

(As I was saying) ... so there's no magic date by which you can be sure the
nesting is done, and still have time to make good hay. At some point you have
to say OK, time to mow!

First brood is probably fledged, but Eastern Meadowlarks may raise two broods,
and in New York State Meadowlark eggs have been seen as late as August 1st
(BBA). So there's no magic date by which

I would agree on the first broods being out and fly-worthy by now, most likely.
And second or later broods are probably generally less successful, at least in
such birds as Red-winged Blackbirds that actually do NOT raise two broods
around here, although they may try-try-again as many as 4
The NY breeding season table in the BBA handbook says 1-2 broods for Eastern
Meadowlark, but gives no indication of how common second broods might be.
I suppose you could watch the field closely for evidence of a second nesting,
but if your goal is to win the cooperation of farmers, then it
A meadowlark was singing on territory in neighbor's hayfield at least
by April 28th this year. I heard him regularly, early in the day, for
over a month and then my schedule changed so I do't really know if he
still is singing there mornings or not.
To my surprise, our neighbor just asked
Had one EASTERN MEADOWLARK perching and singing on Center Road in Ovid just

Very new yard bird: an eastern MEADOWLARK has been singing for a few days and
just a few minutes ago I got a visual ID. This in addition to the nesting
ORCHARD ORIOLE this year makes it very exciting to bird front my front yard .
I think the OROR have hatched but I can not tell for sure.
I just returned from walking one of the dogs out to the mailbox and
back (Snyder Hill Road). In the span of half an hour, I heard/saw
several Eastern Bluebirds calling from the powerlines, a flyover flock
of 20 Red-winged Blackbirds, Juncos chattering, White-throated
