Re: [cayugabirds-l] odd radar at mid-morning - migrating raptors?

2018-09-23 Thread David Nicosia
I looked over the radar this morning and I didn't see anything obvious
around 938 am. Thermals are just beginning to rise at this time plus all
the fog that was around was lifting. Not sure from the data I have at home.
I will check from work tomorrow where I have higher resolution data.

[cayugabirds-l] odd radar at mid-morning - migrating raptors?

2018-09-23 Thread Dave Nutter
I just refreshed the Binghamton weather radar map at 9:38am, which removed the
obvious flower of night migration which I looked at before dawn this morning.
But it looks like there are wispy remnants of the migration map mainly to our
east, which could be raptors moving due south from the east end of Lake
Ontario, but also some around southern Tompkins County in the highlands which
might be kettles on updrafts from wind against hills or perhaps Broad-wingeds
initiating thermal flight after a night of rest and an evening and morning
hunting in the forests. Anyone with more knowledge of weather, radar, &
migration care to consider these hypotheses?
