[cayugabirds-l] Phoebe empty-nesters

2024-04-16 Thread Robin Cisne
Asking for a friend (no, really!):

"I'm going to have my house pressure washed and re-stained this summer. I
don't want to interrupt my Phoebe's nesting/fledging but I have to give
these companies a date. Do you have any idea when would be a post-fledge
time for this?

Thanks for your help,
Robin

[cayugabirds-l] Phoebe and osprey nest-building

2020-04-04 Thread jaredwdawson
Happiness is waking up to a foraging Eastern Phoebe in our silver maple tree,
first of the season for us in Trumansburg, and then spending an hour watching
the Osprey pair building their nest on the cell tower just south of the village
of Covert.
We had extended views of male repeatedly making trips close by us to pick up
sticks and clumps of vegetation and then returning to the nest where the larger
female sat on the edge of the nest, occasionally going to the nest under
construction and moving things a bit while the male was out, but most of the
arrangements were made by the male. A member of our group also reported that
copulation occurred, while we were dispersing, cinching the male-female ID.

Phoebe being incessant, Sandra Place dead end, today at 1530h.

American crow nest nearby—I received severe reprimands for even thinking of

But the phoebe just flipped around over the little stream there, singing…

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Phoebe!

2017-04-02 Thread AB Clark
Phoebes apparently arrived en masse. The first one I had was right across from
the Frog Barn on Sapsucker Woods Rd, on Thursday 30 March, 12 noon. Sounded a
bit out of practice.

Then another was singing in my yard (oob) on HIle School Rd later that
afternoon.

[cayugabirds-l] Phoebe visits nest site

2014-04-03 Thread Geo Kloppel
Here on the northeastern side of 1,920' Sorry Hunter Hill in West Danby we've
finally lost enough snow that the Fox Sparrows can rake and rummage the ground
under the shrub thickets, and of course they're singing lustily. Honey bees are
out too! The Eastern Phoebe that's perching familiarly on branches just beyond
the eaves of my workshop this morning seems in all likelihood to be the newly
returned owner of this traditional nest site. My pond is still frozen, but the
rotting ice is very mushy now, and I trust it will soon vanish, and Wood Ducks
will be visiting!

[cayugabirds-l] Phoebe and others

2014-04-02 Thread Bill Mcaneny
A phoebe arrived this a.m. Will it stay? None stayed here last year. Two
TV's circling over the corn fields at the intersection of Seneca Rd and
Kingtown Rd (TBurg) about 1:30 today. Yesterday, two turkeys on Savercool
Rd just west of our barns. I stopped the truck and they just poked along
until they found a hole in the brush that they could escape into. Bluebirds
and House Sparrows trying out the nest boxes. There are about 16 boxes but
all the birds seem to like the same box. Two days ago, there was a Caro.
Wren singing here. On and off for the past 2 months, there have been 1 or 2
C. Wrens coming to our feeders. We never saw any signs of succumbing to bad
weather except for the time last week when they got shut into the garage.
They were not there long, and gratefully flew out when the doors were opened
later in the day. A couple of years ago, a C. Wren perished in the garage
after getting shut in. Two robins acting very territorial. Several birds
collecting nesting materials. Happy Spring. Go bird!

[cayugabirds-l] Phoebe takeover attempt

2013-05-05 Thread Susan Fast
We have a pair of yard PHOEBES, as we usually do. This year the female
built 2 nests, about 5' apart, one under the eaves on the east side of our
back porch, the other on the north side. Just before noon, I heard several
sharp "fee-bees", which is unusual, as the male (presumably) has not been
singing much for a week or so; no need to. Then a third PHOEBE appeared,
and a terrific fight ensued, near the nests=a ball of flashing wings and
much chattering, which is not pleasant sounding. Then a fourth PHOEBE
appeared, which engaged the remaining individual of the original pair. The
fighting went on simultaneously, about 30' apart. Fighting and chattering
went on for 5-10 minutes. Then it was quiet. 5 minutes later, one bird was
seen flycatching near the nests; 5 minutes after this the other began
preening. The current pair act like they are familiar with the area, so I
believe this was a takeover attempt by another pair of phoebes, male and
female, which is unusual to me, as it is a single interloper that tries to
oust one of an established pair.

[cayugabirds-l] phoebe feeding swallow?

2012-06-26 Thread Asher Hockett
I was watching our box of tree swallows. One young bird has found it's way
out and to the top of the box where it begs in vain when its mother returns
and feed chicks still in the box. I was wondering if it would get fed when
an Eastern Phoebe appeared, hovered/almost stood on the box and seemed to
feed the young swallow who gaped expectantly. I have continued to watch but
not seen a repeat. Has anyone seen this before? The parent swallow
continues to ignore the rooftop chick while it tends regularly to the ones
inside the opening.

I watch the E Phoebe and it has stuck around - has the brightest yellow
belly I have ever seen on one.

[cayugabirds-l] Phoebe back here too

2010-04-01 Thread Kathy Strickland

Phoebes up at this end of the lake too. First saw "my" phoebe about 8:30 while
I was talking to Fritzie on the phone just before I left for the morning. Then
when I was home this afternoon it was delightful to hear it singing thru the
open windows. Also tonight a few spring peepers are calling in what is left of
the swampy woods across the road (a breeding sink, unfortunately, since the
rest of it will be bulldozed shortly) and at least one toad is trilling. Venus
and Mercury a pretty sight in the west just now, too.
Such a lovely spring day.

In the morning to keep of the smell of Jointer compound (or whatever it is
called, but stinks), I opened the windows and I also heard a very insistent
Eastern Phoebe of my neighborhood vocalizing.

Last a couple of times when I have walked to Pine Tree road, I have got fooled
by a mockingbird. I heard Kestrel calling so I looked immediately for it and
only to hear a next call either a killdeer or tufted mouse or anything else.
He does perfect mimicry of Kestrel. I think it must have learnt from the local
kestrel of Equestrian center.

[cayugabirds-l] phoebe, tree swallow

2010-04-01 Thread B Mcaneny
Two spring birds here at the farm this a.m. First, a PHOEBE flew into a tree
next to the house, then a TREE SWALLOW landed on the perch in the field. Both
are first sightings for us this year.

[cayugabirds-l] phoebe

2010-03-27 Thread Nancy W Dickinson
"Our" phoebe greeted me on my return from SFO this afternoon with a bright
"chip" and a busy swooping about to pick up cluster flies. I'm sure that of
all the birds nesting and being raised in our bank barn, some return to the
very same place each spring. But never more than a few, and then they spread
out around the neighborhood. I find it comforting, especially the way they
pick the same nesting spot, and the same perch on an old wire strung between
the outbuildings.

[cayugabirds-l] Phoebe

2010-03-19 Thread wrevans
Woke up this AM heaing a Phoebe calling outside our house in Danby
(~1650-ft asl). This is my earliest spring arrival record for the Cayuga
Lake Basin in 22 years.
