Without my binocs while walking the dog in rain—but suddenly the harvested and
manured field NE of my drive (147) erupted in pipits. Coming from old cornfield
to eat if this field, I clearly saw ca 200 slender, mostly cryptic, light
bellies and longish tails with white outer feathers coming up i
About an hour ago I parked at Freese Rd Community Gardens and walked along
the Monkey Run rim trail until it comes out on the back of some of
the Hanshaw Rd fields to the east of Freese Rd (at most 1/4 mile). Not far
from the treeline were around 30 well-camouflaged and very active AMERICAN
PIPITS
Just put in eBird which didnt believe my estimated number of 80. I think
actually there were initially more 45 min earlier than my count- by- 10s at
1800 EDT. Unmistakable long legged sparrow streaked birds with flashing outer
tail feathers. It was hard to keep an eye on all the sub-flocks each
At least 14, possibly 25 pipits were at Myers, flew towards Salt Point. Very
windy. A couple were still on the salmon creek island with robins.
Also bluebird, kingfisher, flickers, many grackles at the FL marina.

At least 3, maybe 5, American Pipits foraging invisibly on the beach on the
north side of Salt Point (flushed there by me from closer to the point). Still
struggling to photograph them.

Yesterday there was a flock of AMERICAN PIPITS in a newly plowed and planted
field on Perry City Road, outside Trumansburg... a new bird for my "home" list,
and a new bird for my life list!

This afternoon as I returned from a taxi run to the western suburbs of Perry City I happened upon a flock of scores of AMERICAN PIPITS in the westernmost block of Aiken Rd in Enfield. Of course I noted what sort of field attracted them: newly cut hay on the first of November. --Dave Nutter
