We had a nice flock of about 350 cranes fly over us on our Friday survey on
the Tschache Pool dike. They semed to be coming from  Armitage Rd. way.
 We could hear the high-pitched vocalizations of the colts. Only other
place I've heard that is at the Rowe Sanctuary in Gibbon, Nebraska.

[cayugabirds-l] Sandhill Cranes at Knox

   After estimating 450 Tundra Swans and 8 Trumpeters at Armitage we went to 
East Road at 4:20. Two very large flocks of Sandhills all got up from the corn 
fields to the west at the same time and all flew in to Knox-Marcellus. As far 
as I know the minimum of 490 that I counted on 12/8 is the highest ever counted 
there. These 2 flocks appeared to be even more but were right overhead and 
impossible to put a number on. It was a phenomenal experience. If anyone is 
bored and wants to work on numbers and catch them staging in a field before 
flying to roost  I bet it’s now closer to 600. Enjoy them before they leave!

[cayugabirds-l] sandhill cranes & more at MNWR

Numbers weren't high in the windy weather at MNWR today, but some nice sights 
anyway!

2 Sandhill Cranes at the pond by the visitor center this AM, along with a 
number of Northern Pintails, Green-winged Teals, and at least one American 
Black Duck x Mallard. Plus of course some watchful Canadian geese.

A small flock of Sandhill Cranes landed in the water along the shore below the 
drive up  at the Marsellus-Knox marsh just as we got there, and stayed for a 
good while (a small group of dabblers also there among a few Canadian geese, 
but the angle of the bright spring sun had them silhouetted,  preventing a good 
look to say what kind).

Then, in the Savannah marsh, a pair of Trumpeter swans landed, also just as we 
got there, for a languid bit of preening in the sun. In the water beyond,  a 
little too far for us to be able to say for sure, a pair of American Wigeons 
(we think) shared some late morning peace and quiet, windy weather 
notwithstanding.

All in all, a lovely  early spring morning in the Finger Lakes.

[cayugabirds-l] Sandhill Cranes at Catherine Creek WMA in Montour Falls today3/18/23

Saw two beautifully colored sandhill cranes walking through the dead
grasses of the marsh, close enough to get a picture with my phone.  Saw
them again on our return trip back to the car.  This time  my dog saw them
too.  She let out a bark and I got to hear their melodic alarm call loud
and clear!

[cayugabirds-l] Sandhill cranes at Route 31 muck

I just enjoyed watching about 25 Sandhill cranes, and then another 100+/- 
joined us! All seen on the south side of route 31. I pulled off at the first 
“pull off” coming from the split of 31/89, where there used to be a barn (not 
the potato barn spot further west). 

Also was happy to first hear, then see, about 2 dozen Horned Larks flitting 
around the fields.

And a lone bluebird singing in flight!

Beautiful evening to go birding!

I'd check Knox Marcellus Marsh and the fields around Armitage Rd. and
Olmstead Road (Olmstead is a right hand turn off of Armitage as you head
west on Armitage). If you strike out there check the fields along Rt. 31 a
bit north of Knox Marcellus.

Late yesterday afternoon I saw maybe 100 sandhill cranes just to the west of 
Olmsted Road, north of Armitage Road. As it was getting dark, they took in 
small groups flying southwest.

was milling around, along with many Tundra Swans, Canada Geese, 
Green-winged Teal, Mallards, Black Ducks, and some Northern Pintail 
(and likely many others, but they were distant and it was getting 
dark).  Small flock of Cranes took off in various directions as we watched.

[cayugabirds-l] Sandhill cranes at Montezuma

There are 12 very tan Sandhill cranes in the southeast corner of the Sandhill 
crane unit, visible from Vandyne Spoor Road.  Very active, flying up and down. 
Would these be last year’s young?  Only one appeared gray.   5:20 pm, Sunday.

[cayugabirds-l] Sandhill Crane nest, Main Pool Montezuma

Reuben Stoltzfus just told me about a Sandhill Crane nest he saw yesterday from 
the Main Pool tower at Montezuma NWR, looking north about 200yards just on the 
far side of a water channel. The adults were well camouflaged and they had at 
least 1 very tiny chick, so small that it seemed not to have left the nest. I 
don’t know how long that situation would last while waiting for egg #2 to 
hatch, or whether they would continue to brood the young or return there, but 
it may be worth looking for today or tomorrow, as well as scanning closely for 
the adults in the vicinity.

The first 2020 record of Sandhill Crane for the Cayuga Lake Basin of which I’m 
aware was on 4 March at Knox-Marsellus Marsh from East Rd in Tyre reported by 
David Kennedy.  (Please anyone who has information on any earlier record, let 
me know, so I can correct the record on the Cayuga Bird Club webpage)  The next 
day, 5 March, cranes were also reported at Armitage Rd, at Van Dyne Spoor Rd, 
and at Carncross Rd in Savannah. This information is on eBird.

Sandhill Cranes are wonderful whenever and wherever we find them, so it’s great 
that people are seeing or hearing them today. It wasn’t always this way. The 
first year the species was reported in the Cayuga Lake Basin of which I am 
aware was 1990, and the next was 1994, but they have been regular since 2000 
and have built up a breeding  population throughout the Montezuma Wetlands 
Complex, with many of the marshes hosting a pair. Their number may be augmented 
by migrants in autumn when we have seen gatherings of 70 or more. 

The Dean’s Cove report by Suan Hsi-Yong was of overhead migrants, so that’s not 
a regular location for them.

I was just about to come in for lunch when I heard the unmistakable calling of 
a SANDHILL CRANE. I spotted the bird, almost overhead, flying NW. When it got 
over the Ithaca reservoir it circled several times then disappeared beyond the 
treeline, still headed NW. First for the yard for me!

west-southwest.

63 SANDHILL CRANES foraging in a field of what looked like winter wheat towards 
the east end of Armitage Road. We initially had three cranes fly over on East

[cayugabirds-l] Sandhill Cranes in Savannah

Had a pair of Sandhill Cranes at the Sandhill Crane Unit (Montezuma) on the 
south side of Van Dyne Spoor Rd around sunset Saturday. Also had a group of 
over 2 dozen Swans that appear to be Trumpeters. Photos available on Eaton 
Birding Society’s facebook page. (No Short-eared Owls seen, but several N. 
Harriers were flying around, along with lots of ducks & Canada geese).

[cayugabirds-l] Sandhill Cranes at Martens Tract

Three of us took the day to travel around Cayuga Lake today. The GREAT HORNED 
OWL chicks cooperated for good views for starters. We saw COMMON LOONS and 
HORNED GREBES at Meyers. There were numerous ducks at many of the stopping 
points along the east side of the lake. There were EAGLES on nests in Aurora, 
Mud Lock and Armitage Road. I lost count of the OSPREY on nests at many 
familiar spots. There is now a lot more open water in Montezuma. Eagles and 
geese were using the huts of Muskrat Town for perches; gulls were scrapping 
with each other for food. There were plenty of GREAT BLUE HERONS too. The most 
common ducks to be found included RING NECK, PINTAIL, NORTHERN SHOVELER. 
BUFFLEHEAD. We saw all the mergansers with the RED BREASTED MERGANSER at Long 
Point SP.

The last of our stops above Montezuma was at the Martens Tract. All seemed 
quiet and we were getting ready to leave when we heard the squawk of the 
SANDHILL CRANES. They first appeared in clear view walking along the open 
roadway next to the pond. Soon, they were airborne and circled around low 
overhead as we stood in the parking area - four of them. Such a treat to hear 
and see.

We made it to the creamery before they closed for a sandwich and ice cream.

1 SANDHILL CRANE off McAllister rd, which is next road east of E. Venice rd. 
both run off NY Rt 90, east of Genoa, NY. 
Crane seen at least a mile north of Rt. 90, well behind a small white house w/ 
a green front door, west side of road,in still partly snowy corn stubble field. 
No mate seen. 2 CA Geese a few 100' away from crane.

[cayugabirds-l] Sandhill Cranes

I went on Gary's field trip yesterday. After the official tour ended, I went 
over to Montezuma Audubon Center in Savannah to see if any Sandhill Crane's 
were there. The woman working the desk said 2 had been there that morning 
visible from visitor center. we chatted about that briefly then Susan Danskin 
phoned me to report the Sandhill crane on East Road by Knox Marsellus marsh. 

When I first went there no luck as expected since she said it had flown away. I 
drove around areas to the west looking for it. Later ended up back on East road 
2 times. 
The 2nd time, I clearly saw 2 SANDHILL CRANES flying over the woods behind the 
little airport there!!
Did not re-find them during a little more driving around the block to Rt. 89 
etc. 

Our bird trip experienced all sorts of challenging weather from sleet and 
blowing snow, cold winds, then mist, then pouring rain!
But as I drove home from MNWR the sky cleared to lovely blue and the sun came 
out!
Great ending to a great trip.

itself. Around 11:15 I had 3 Sandhill Cranes fly over me. I was on
State Street near the bridge to Brindley St. They were headed West. I
lost track of them when they went over West Hill.

About 2:45 today, two SANDHILL CRANES walking through the large corn field
to the south of Rte. 90 between Genoa and Locke, more specifically shortly
west of the farm with mailbox marked no. 10630, between Rte. 34 and the
curve on Rte. 90.  The two birds walked along the edge of the field and
down out of sight behind a rise with brush on it.  (Credit here goes to my
visiting brother Don, who first spotted them and is familiar with these
birds, which I am not.)

This is, I believe, near East Venice Rd. where it intersects Rt. 90.  There has 
been a pair of cranes nesting there for quite a few years.  The nest used to be 
in a small wetland behind a farmhouse  just to the SW of the south end of E. 
Venice Rd (across Rt. 90).  A group from the Crane Foundation in Wisconsin 
banded a chick there a couple years ago.  This sighting is good news, as I saw 
no activity at this wetland last year (or so far this year either).  The field 
to the east of the wetland used to be alfalfa from which the cranes got lots of 
bugs.  The field was sold 2 years ago, the alfalfa plowed up, and corn planted. 
 I had assumed the cranes had moved on, but apparently not.  Thanks for the 
news, and keep watching.

The description of where you saw these cranes is consistent with sightings over 
the years. If these birds are returning to an old, familiar nesting site, I may 
be able to pinpoint the location for all who are interested and don’t want to 
drive all the way up to the Montezuma complex to see these beautiful birds: E. 
Venice Rd., the next road east of the Genoa cemetery and Stewarts Corners Rd., 
intersects Rte 90, with a large cornfield on the south side of 90. In the past, 
the adults and their young have stayed mostly in the SW corner of the field, 
away from any traffic on 90. I’m not familiar with the crop rotation scheme on 
this field, but when it’s planted for corn there usually aren’t cranes around, 
as far as I can tell. Not sure why.

[cayugabirds-l] Sandhill Crane - Clay Marsh; Bald Eagle carrying Am. Coot - Geneva

Friday night at Clay Marsh a Sandhill Crane flew by.  Derby Hill reports seeing 
it pass this morning.  Earlier in the week a Bald Eagle was seen carrying an 
American Coot on Seneca Lake at the Geneva Waterfront.  Cackling Goose at the 
north end of Cayuga Lake.  Staging/migration of geese has begun in a big way, 
with a massive roost-flight to Seneca Lake on Monday.  Large numbers of ducks 
at north ends of both Cayuga and Seneca.

Hi All,

I saw the White Pelican today from Towpath Rd. about 1:00. It was very far away 
in northeastern corner hanging out with a group of Cormorants. I also saw three 
Sandhill Cranes in the water about half  the distance. One flew east and I lost 
sight of it. The other two retreated some and were resting on the mudflats. 
Lots of Great Blue Herons and Egrets in the back.

[cayugabirds-l] Sandhill Cranes and TV congregation

Enroute Montour Falls on Skyline Drive (East Hill) at around 1130 today we 
spotted
the two adult Sandhill Cranes feeding in a newly hayed field. The birds were on 
a
line of sight to the Fairgrounds (most notable landmark across the canal would 
be
the road salt environmental structure. this is most likely the pair that has
attempted nesting in Queen Catharine Marsh these last two years, apparently
unsuccessfully.

 In Montour Falls at Stillman's Greenhouse we counted at least 40 Turkey 
Vultures
 kittling. We see TVs all the time as they take advantage if the hillside 
thermals
 between Seneca Lake and Horseheads but have never seen so many at once. Folks 
at the
 Greenhouse however thought it common. There's a lovely old property across the
 street from them that was abandoned for years. We're told the TVs would roost 
on the
 house and in the AM, would sun dry on the lawn! The home has been rehabbed and
 occupied so the TVs have moved roost to the fire academy just to the SE.

[cayugabirds-l] Sandhill cranes

Kathy Strickland  I saw 4 SANDHILL CRANES at Morgan Rd. last evening  one 
SHORT-EARRED OWL near the river on Carncross Rd.. Saw many ducks, esp. in the 
May's Pool inlet canal along Rte 89. Pintails abound! Still LOTS of snow 
geese in the air.

I drove across the new bridge onto Howlands Island but really recommend that 
others not try to go until the mud dries UNLESS you have 4WD. I have a Subaru 
but even so, the rutted, bumpy mud really grabbed the tires  there's no place 
to turn around until you get to the end of the road.

In the afternoon John  I went to the Sherwood Rd. farm pond east of Rte. 34 to 
look for snows  blues but found only ice. On over on Owasco Lake we found 1 to 
2,000 snows  blues. 

Bill Hecht said many snows are still on the Cayuga lake out from Cayuga Lake 
St. Park. He also reported 2 eagles in the trees near his house south of 
Cayuga, south of the RR tracks on 90. Kathy  I saw one in the tree near the 
new nest at Mud Lock.

Time to watch for the 1st ospreys! Saw our 1st FLICKER here Sat..

when a sandhill crane came flying and calling over our heads.  Heading

At 6:45 this morning in the field across from 218 Bundy Road there was one 
sandhill crane.  It was still there about 10 minutes later when I returned to 
the same spot on my walk.  I walk in this area frequently, and have never seen

[cayugabirds-l] Sandhill Crane - Covert

Just got back from my evening walk having seen a Sandhill Crane.  Location
is on Halls Corners Rd. about .4 miles west of County Rd 142  in the field
on the north side of the road (new wheat about 4 high in the field).
Single, very brown bird.  First seen by eye about 7:05 then found again with
binoculars about 8:00 in the northwest corner of the field.

Hi,

We received a report from a group of local birders of a Sandhill 
Crane in northern Wayne County.  It was seen  last Friday on Garner 
Road, Wolcott, NY, just south of Chimney Bluffs State Park - in a 
field on the east side of the road.A pair was recorded in this 
vicinity in July, 2005.  Possibly a breeding location?

[cayugabirds-l] Sandhill cranes chicks

I spent much time this morning on Carncross Rd. (N. Montezuma Wetlands
Complex) watching the 2 adult SANDHILL CRANES and their 2 CHICKS.  The
chicks are about half grown now, walk like the adults, forage for
themselves, and have a good growth of primaries on their long wings.  They
cannot fly yet, however.

I watched a series of behaviors that, to me, indicate the chicks are quite
bright.  During the first hour of observation, an adult made 2 attempts to
demonstrate the mechanics of flight.  It took the customary 3-4 steps,
flapped its wings and flew low about 125'.  One of the chicks soon tried to
emulate.  There were 3 tries and each was different.  All started with
extensive wing flapping.  In the first case, the chick hopped forward about
6 feet.  It did get off the ground by hopping, but only a couple of inches.
In the second try, the wing flapping was followed by a rapid run.  This
looked promising to me, but failed to get the bird in the air.  For the
third attempt, the chick actually galloped (like a kid playing horsey).  I
can't remember ever seeing a bird gallop.

I think that after each unsuccessful attempt, the chick changed its tactics.
