I asked my friend/ kendal resident about her Merlin woodcock report on Eclipse 
day & she wrote:

Hi Donna
I think the woodcock registered on my Merlin as it was darkening. I was getting 
bored with the clouds cover of the eclipse so turned on Merlin. I first got a 
cardinal then song sparrow, robin, then woodcock. Later a couple others 
appeared.

[cayugabirds-l] woodcock on Mt. Kendal

Last night (Monday) not long after sunset 3 of us inmates heard and saw the 
Woodcock doing its display flight and peenting!
I think we saw it both ascending and descending.

It seems to have quit right after 8 PM both nights I was listening/observing.
It was in the same spot on Mt. Kendal as it was Friday and Saturday.

Yesterday here, I saw a single Mockingbird again. I hope the mate shows up 
(pair here last fall)!
I have seen a Song Sparrow and heard a Carolina Wren, along with Cardinals and 
other usual bird residents.
Lots more bird singing in the morning - the start of the Dawn Chorus!

[cayugabirds-l] Woodcock at Mr. Kendal

Tonight after dinner in the main building here at Kendal (7:05), I walked to 
the small hill to the south of "campus" that we call Mt. Kendal to see if I 
could find the Woodcock  that was reported by Nelly Farnum last night.

Finally, after it was almost dark (~7:40), I heard a relatively faint peenting 
from the southeast side of the hill near the bushes by the houses on Spruce 
Lane, Cayuga Hts. this is more towards Triphammer Road.
I walked that direction to get closer and was across an overgrown grassy area 
from where the bird was peenting.

Then peenting stopped   saw nothing due to bad eyes and darkness, but soon I 
heard the twittery sounds the Woodcock makes as it descends from high in the 
sky!
I heard this several times before it seemed to be done about 7:55.
I was very cold by then, so I left to go home to 377.

Nelly Farnum and I will go there tomorrow at 7:30 to see it we can find the 
bird again!

Nelly 3 years ago convinced the grounds crew here to stop mowing "Mt. Kendal" 
except for a few grassy trails; it has grown into a nice grassy place with 
goldenrod, asters, tall grass, teasels, etc.
And now it has a Woodcock! Just down the road from all the malls.
Build it and they will come!

Heard two more. And earlier today my husband flushed 2 woodcock right behind 
the house

This morning in an alder swamp at the edge of Michigan Hollow Marsh I nearly 
stepped on a brood of Woodcock chicks. Mom flew up just in front of me, 
attempting distraction, but I looked down at my feet instead, and there they

Thanks Marie!

Funny about the woodcock. Last night, as I lay in bed, I heard the 
wing-feathers whistling of a woodcock right outside the window. No “peanuts”, 
no sky display with chirps. Just a woodcock on the move. We had as many as 5 
woodcocks in our fields this spring, and I often hear them displaying here in 
early fall.

edge on my property to see what was around in the beaver pond next door.
First, up from the ground flew a chunky medium-sized bird which fluttered off 
twittering into the woods and landed on the ground again. Too small for a 
Ruffed Grouse (which ARE there occasionally) and wrong habitat for a snipe, so 
I'm going to call it an American Woodcock.

Second, on my way back I was brought up short by a loud ticking call and on a 
branch over the stream was a Northern Waterthrush. I do seem to have them come 
through this time of year some years, but they don't nest on the property.

Finally, another somewhat unusual bird for my yard is the Carolina Wren that's 
been around for most of this week, in fact there may be two. What an 
interesting variety of songs and calls they make! Never used to see them up 
here at this elevation, but with climate change who knows what may show up next!

And as a follow-up to my search for Caspian Terns at Myers Pt, I did find five 
of them there a couple of days ago and was able to get some photos. All adults, 
but I'm sure the fledglings will show up soon with their parents and that will 
make for some good photo ops.

Our group went to Dodge Road, where the woodcocks started later than when I
scouted, but with enough light to be easily seen. After a few skydances,
those with muck boots and binoculars took a few steps into the muddy field
where I was able to get my spotlight on the bird on the ground.

The owling half of our trip bore no fruits, though some thought they saw a
shape flying away from the top of the Dodge Road spruce trees. At Ellis
Hollow Preserve, the silence was decorated by creepy rustlings from the
surrounding leaves which turned out to be night crawlers. Our final attempt
for owls was at Monkey Run South.

and Whitted Roads. We got out of the cars at a minute before 8 pm, just as the 
woodcock uttered its first “peent” of the night. We were able to follow its 
flight several times before attempting to get a closer look at it on the 
ground. Unfortunately (for us), the brush had grown up in the past year, and we 
just couldn’t manage a sighting.

Following that we drove over to Hunt Hill Road for a staked-out Barred Owl. 
After a little more than ten minutes, the owl did come in and begin to call. It 
was the presumed female, based on the lower frequency call. Shortly after that, 
the male arrived, and we were treated to a duet that lasted for several minutes!

We had our first Woodcock last Thursday the 22nd, the day of the snowstorm. 
Technically we are a few hundred yards south of the basin in Newfield. This is 
very early even for our location.

I read in "Bulls Birds of New York State (1998 edition) that 
woodcock".among our earliest breeders, with males reported in display as 
early as the last week in January and, commonly, by the last week of 
February."(pg. 268) That being said, these reports could possibly be from other 
(coastal?/southern?) N.Y. State.

There was just an alert on Facebook that Woodcocks are really suffering due
to the snowstorm as they have migrated in only to find no ground and no
earthworms available.  I hope that your stream may have some open muddy
areas along the edge.

[cayugabirds-l] Woodcock?

I was out on snowshoes in my backyard around 7:30 last night (dusk). I was 
going down towards the stream when a bird in flight caught my eye. It was 
headed up the stream bed and it landed out of sight near the stream. It made no 
noise - neither vocalizations nor wing noise. It appeared to be football-shaped 
and not a very big bird (large robinesque). There is nearby a known habit for 
Woodcock and I'm thinking that's what it might have been.  Any other thoughts 
for me to consider?

[cayugabirds-l] Woodcock on Sherwood platform at Cornell Lab of O

I'm leading a bird walk and we found it on Wilson Trail north and it keeps 
walking in front of us and is now on Sherwood Platform. It did the woodcock 
bobbing 'dance' for us! Quite a treat. 4 stinkin' cute Bluejay fledglings being 
fed at Fuller wetlands on same trail.

[cayugabirds-l] Woodcock on Cayutaville Rd

Yesterday, while driving on Cayutaville Rd, I spotted a Woodcock in the middle 
of the road. I slowed down and pulled over - the bird didn't fly away, but was 
making a bobbing motion. Thinking it might need assistance, I opened my door, 
talking to it,  but it then started slowly walking to the other side of the 
road, continually bobbing. Is this part of a mating behavior, or was something 
wrong with the bird?

Our woodcock has returned! I stepped outside (Sunder Hill area) at 6:30 this 
evening to hear just one sequence of “sky dance”. No “peents” before or after. 
I assume that the guy arrived last night and is just beginning to settle in. In 
past years we have had up to seven woodcocks on and around the property. I’m 
hoping that the next few nights will bring more of his friends and then a few 
females!

Mark's post reminds me of something I'd been meaning to share. This past 
Tuesday (26 May) I had some free time while Laurie was at an eye doctor 
appointment for which I would need to drive her home. I spent the hour 
wandering the woods off Arrowwood Drive in the Village of Lansing between the 
Convenient Care complex and Sapsucker Woods.

In trail-less deciduous forest on a moisture-flattened floor of dead leaves 
marked with occasional tufts of grass, weeds, ferns, and patches of seedling 
trees, I flushed an AMERICAN WOODCOCK from about 5 feet away. It came up from 
my right, passed directly in front of me at eye level, and slowly descended 
about 20 yards to my left and behind me. The orange on its tail was 
conspicuous, its legs dangled as it flew, and it seemed awkward and floppy as 
it alit. Probably Woodcock always look like they have a frightened stare, given 
their large and somewhat rearward-facing eyes, but it certainly gave me a 
worried impression. This was not a bird escaping from being stepped upon by 
exploding underfoot and fleeing. I've had that heart-stopping experience. This 
was a bird trying to distract me.

I began carefully walking around the area looking for a nest, a depression 
perhaps, some irregular formation of the leaves, or a group of eggs below a 
fern frond. After a couple minutes of slow luckless searching I was standing 
about where I started. The adult Woodcock made some movement to ensure I was 
aware of her, so I knew I was onto something. I had been careful with every 
step, circling a fairly small area, but I wasn't seeing a nest or eggs. While 
considering my next move, I noticed an oak leaf-sized patch a few inches in 
front of my right boot. Like the surrounding leaves it was bilaterally 
symmetrical. Its pattern of brown and tan was stronger, yet most of the edge 
was indistinct. Suddenly I recognized it as a flattened downy baby bird where 
surely I had walked. But it was too symmetrical for a crushed body. And then I 
was aware of a sibling in exactly the same position a couple feet to the left. 
Somehow I hadn't stepped on them. They were holding themselves flat. I crouched 
down and found I could pick up the close baby. It had a black bill about an 
inch long which had been extended in front of it like a petiole. The bird in my 
hand began to object with vague struggling and a high thin whine. This sound 
appeared to flip a switch in the other members of the family. As I let my 
captive go, it spread its feathered but useless wings and walked away, while 
the downy youngster on my left stood up, held out its wings and also started 
walking. Two previously overlooked babies to my right also stood up, spread 
their wings like giant mushrooms, and began walking toward where mama had 
returned and given a call a few yards away in denser vegetation before flying 
in front of me again in another attempt at distraction. Even though I could 
easily keep up with them, I pretended the display worked and ignored the babies 
as they disappeared behind logs and among weeds and seedling trees. I left the 
area confident that the family would quickly regroup but amazed at how much 
they, like other fledglings, depend on luck not to be found and eaten.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] woodcock viewing?

The Lindsay-Parsons Preserve has long been a good place for viewing Woodcock 
displays. Just park in the lot, walk down the trail into the ravine, cross the 
little bridge and continue up and out into the big fields. Head for the knoll 
with the Leopold bench: you can see a huge expanse of sky from there, and 
you'll be right in the middle of things.

I haven't actually checked them out there yet this spring, but I'm confident 
that West Danby's Woodcock are putting on a good show. Tonight they're even up 
here on the hillside, in my field on Tupper Road!

At 7:35 tonight I pulled up to the field just east of the airport on Snyder Rd. 
 The minute I got out of my car I started to hear the “peents of at least one 
American Woodcock coming from the less snowy areas of the field.  During the 
twenty minutes I hung around I heard repeated peenting and the “sky song” 
twice, but was unable to get my binoculars on the bird.  As I was leaving, 
headed west on Snyder, I saw a Great Horned Owl perched at the top of a tree 
beautifully silhouetted by the fading light.  It flew at the sound of my tires 
stopping on the gravel shoulder but fortunately relanded just a few hundred 
yards to the west just before the curve on Snyder.

Bodes well for the SFO Woodcock and Owl watch...

Matt Medler and I just heard a Woodcock taking off in a field on Triphammer 
Road, just past the Mall. (skydance sound - not peenting). I heard the same

Matt Medler and I just heard a Woodcock taking off in a field on Triphammer 
Road, just past the Mall. (skydance sound - not peenting). I heard the same 
thing here on Whitted Road several evenings ago. I see from eBird that they 
have lingered in Tompkins County as late as the end of November.

During this morning's Kids Discover the Trails walk, one of the kids spotted a 
woodcock some ten feet off the trail (a short distance from the split in Wilson 
trail north, opposite end from the footbridge). It sat motionless like a large 
strange mushroom, then relieved itself and scuttled into the underbrush.

Today at 3:00 PM I flushed a woodcock from the ditch along Sapsucker Woods
Rd, across from where Sanctuary Dr intersects.  It flew only about 30 feet
from the road before landing on the forest floor.

On Monday 3 March Chris Wood discovered what appears to be the first reported AMERICAN WOODCOCK for the Cayuga Lake Basin - and all upstate NY - according to eBird. It was along the old railroad grade by Monkey Run South in the Town of Dryden in a tamarack swamp which remained wet despite the frigid temperatures. In past years the first woodcock for the basin has often been found in February, often by Nancy Dickinson on her extensive rich grounds in Mecklenburg, but alas, she has moved out of the basin, and the winter is colder. Perhaps there are woodcock there now, wondering what happened to her. --Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] woodcock encounter

I had a theory that woodcocks didn't dance when it was too cold or snowy, so 
last evening when I took the dog out around 7:40 I was surprised to hear them 
as we stepped from the lawn to the edge of a brushy field.  There was one 
woodcock just landing (and warbling) to my right, and one peenting very nearby 
on my left, so close that I was frustrated not to see it against the snow.  
Suddenly the one to my right made a sound I'd never heard, a gruff alarm like 
hehehehehehehehehe and with that it flew right past me towards the other bird.  
Then they both rose together in a twittering flight, silhouetted against the 
sky.  The dog began to bark, and the birds vanished.  But it seemed that they 
were competing over the territory?  And maybe in fact the moonlit snow gives 
them a good dancefloor, as long as it isn't too deep.

[cayugabirds-l] Woodcock arrival

At dusk this evening I happened to glance out a window just in time to see a
Woodcock descending for a landing in our front field. It hasn't been above
freezing
for ages, we still have a snow cover and ponds and puddles are still iced in.
As far
as average arrival date goes, it's two days late, but I was very surprised to 
see
it. Went out to listen, but nothing heard. Probably not a very happy bird
right now.

off Warren Rd. near the airport as of a few minutes ago. The peents were

[cayugabirds-l] Woodcock prowl

Wanting more of the cold, windy, faint American Woodcock encounter our Spring 
Ornithology class group had Tuesday night, tonight I went on my own Woodcock 
Prowl by the Snyder Rd./Airport fields. 

First I tried by the tall airport fence where our group went Tues. No Peents 
there. 
So, well after the sun had set, I moved east between the 2 sets of thickets, 
across the road from and a little east of the beige building on Snyder Rd.

Soon, I heard a Peent towards the east bushes. Each time the Woodcock stopped 
Peenting to fly up in the air, I moved towards where the Peents had been. It 
got dark but I am sure I caught glimpses of the bird moving a little on ground. 
Then, after the last Peent and flight, I turned around to face the lighter 
western sky and saw the bird's silhouette as it landed! 

It stopped peenting, so I stumbled over the stubble in the dark, back to my 
car. SO COOL!

As soon as we arrived behind the airport most of my SFO group had an excellent close look at an AMERICAN WOODCOCK on the ground calling before we saw it fly off low toward another spot farther away for complete displays in which we heard the bird calling from the ground, wings whistling during ascent, and vocal chirping during descent. A few of the sharper-eyed among us also saw it momentarily in flight either at the start or end of a skydance. My group saw the flyover of a GREAT HORNED OWL near the Game Farm Road end of the East Hill Recreationway. For several days the species has been spontaneously vocalizing during broad daylight with playback neither necessary nor recommended.--Dave Nutter

Shannon and I finally heard and saw a Woodcock this evening in the fields
at the top of the property.  Perhaps we had been going out too late given
the lack of moonlight in the evening, or perhaps it was the elevation
(1640-1680 Ft) but this was the first we've heard them this year. It was
great to have this spring harbinger back at our place after reading about
them for the past 2 weeks +...

skydance music from a woodcock in the field north of our house. The wind is so 
strong (and cold) I could hear it do the twittering ascent to circle overhead, 
and then the chirping descent, for 7 cycles, but couldn't hear it peent on 
the ground, nor did it do it for long before rising again.  I'm frozen-- how 
can the bird do it?

Last week while vacationing on Wolfe Island in the Thousand Islands(Wolfe is a 
large island but very quiet and mainly rural/agricultural) I was driving after 
sunset on one of the dirt/gravel roads that compose most of the island when I 
saw a woodcock sitting toward the side of the road. It did not move for a 
couple of minutes and I was able to get a photograph of it in the headlights 
before it flew off into the night sky. Wolfe Island offers perfect woodcock 
habitat, with many unused fields and scrub. I continued driving and about a 
quarter mile away from where I saw the woodcock, suddenly in the headlights on 
the dirt/gravel road ahead several small birds flushed up and flew away from 
the road. This happened at least three times as I drove slowly down the road, 
but I could never get a good sighting of these birds, other than they were 
small (robin-sized or smaller) and flew up suddenly ahead. There were probaly a 
dozen altogether. There were no other
 vehicles on this road. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what birds 
these might be. I'm not sure if they were young woodcocks (as I know they are 
active at dawn and dusk), or something else. My husband surmised that they were 
swallows (of which we saw hundreds on the telephone wires on the island, 
gathering for migration), but I didn't think they would be on the roadway at 
night. Any help regarding identification of these birds would be appreciated.

I read your report with interest. I believe that Wolf Island is the  
site of some 85 major wind turbines, now in operation. I am wondering  
how their presence affects the woodcocks' sky dance. And I also  
wonder how the winter Short-eared Owl population is faring.

 had Woodcocks all over the island including our study site which was  
 in the shadows of 3-4 turbines. We even had *many* Wilson's Snipe at  
 our site up there. Basically, the turbines seemed to have little  
 effect on numbers as I've never been to a place with more displaying  
 Snipe and Woodcocks. Many other open area birds also seemed  
 unaffected by the presence of the turbines. This is just what we  
 observed in the ~4 days that we were on the island in May, June and  
 early July. Very cool place though with a LOT of birds!

[cayugabirds-l] Woodcock - Ithaca, Tuesday night

Last night at about 11PM, there was a lone Woodcock peenting from the wet,
open woods just south of the Northwood Apartments, across Warren Road from
the airport.

Sadly, those last big, original woods along Warren Rd. in the Northwoods area 
(near Ithaca airport) is up for sale, so more habitat will be lost for the 
Woodcock and other critters.

On the hayfields I help manage, we have both young turkeys and ruffed grouse
in the tall grass.  It's good cover and also provides a lot more bugs than
the stubble after cutting.  We put off cutting until the end of June, but I
personally would prefer the middle of July.

On Wednesday night 7pm while walking my field I scared up a family of
woodcocks.
I decided to leave them be for a while but will be looking for them again on
Sunday evening.
There was definitely a larger one and several smaller ones. 
The smaller ones didn't fly far from the initial site I scared them from, I
assume their nest site. 

 My hay isn't quite ready to cut yet.

For next year...What is a good date to cut hay if I know I have woodcocks.
Is June 15th still OK?

[cayugabirds-l] Woodcock

Just got home from choir rehearsal and heard the WOODCOCK skydancing over the 
fallow field out back. I always think of Aldo Leupold and his Sand County 
Almanac when I hear Woodcock in the spring. 

 

CHIPPING SPARROWS are back. They seemed to have been animated by the mild 
thunderstorm that moved through around 5:00.
