Ithaca still has a good number of vultures around. I saw at least 10 today at 
the Cornell compost facility on Stevenson Road.

Has anyone seen turkey vultures around? I was driving the back road from Geneva 
to Waterloo this morning (River Road) and in the distance saw what appeared to 
be a kettle of 8 very large, dark  birds behaving like vultures in a 
kettle.slow, circular motion. I had no binocs to confirm. Just before 
seeing this I was alerted to a dark bird flying across a farm field we with a 
distinct dihedral and am certain it wasn't a harrier. I pulled over to look and 
the bird was nowhere to be found. That's when I caught site of the "kettle" in 
the distance of birds too large to be crows.

This afternoon at about 5pm I saw about 200 Turkey Vultures circling over the 
vicinity of NYS-34/96, Decker Rd, and NYS-13 south of Ithaca near the Newfield 
Town Line. Earlier in the day I had seen smaller numbers southbound along the 
east edge of the Cayuga Lake Valley in Lansing. This afternoon about 3:40 I saw 
some kettling, apparently also southbound over West Hill from Downtown Ithaca, 
likely some of the same Judith reported.

If anyone wants to see Turkey Vultures, just stop by the Seneca County 
Fairgrounds (Not the Lott Farm!) in the village of Waterloo (North Rd/Swift 
St). There are about 100 that roost in the morning & evening on the village 
water tower and any available pole/post on the fairgrounds.

For at least the past 3 years, there have been TUVU's roosting during the
fall behind the Varna Community Center, in some tall conifers. I get
neighbors calling me about it every year with a mixture of wonder and
frustration.

I agree Sunday was a good migration day for Turkey Vultures. At about 1pm I was 
near the Lab entrance looking at the western skyline beyond the pond, and I 
watched a near-continuous line of them flying south, about 60 all told. They 
were gliding and gradually losing altitude, and when they got low enough to 
almost be blocked by trees for me, one of them would find a thermal and start 
circling up. Then all those behind it in line would veer into the thermal, and 
suddenly there would be 20 birds kettling. But it seemed they would only circle 
a few times (2 or 3? it was distracting, but I should have tried harder to 
follow a single bird) before they would peel off the top and continue south. I 
saw this a couple of times there, and then when I went to the Freese Road 
Gardens I saw it again, once to the west and once almost overhead. I saw about 
a hundred southbound Turkey Vultures altogether. There were also a few apparent 
locals, by their behavior.

Hey Brad and all,

I did the same too. I scanned the flock three times for Black Vulture, but my 
flock was smaller than yours and had only 22 birds. I just got back from 
watching them. they seemed so care less (as opposed to careless) and 
effortlessly circled around and finally headed up Six Miles Creek, probably 
hoping to roost somewhere. Yesterday afternoon, while I was hanging out laundry 
in my yard, a Bald  Eagle circled over my head fairly close, I was thinking of 
heading inside to my camera, it floated south. But soon returned, but was 
little higher than previous time and circled and floated away to west.
