[cayugabirds-l] Willet

2018-05-03 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
I am almost positive that I just flushed a flock of 16 Willet off the stone
beach, just north of the Ramada and the iron foot bridge, on Seneca Lake in
Geneva.

White and black bars on the wings, a white rump patch and they were vocalizing
a nasally high pitch sound as they flew over and circled.

No photos of course. I was walking dogs!

Is this crazy? I can't make them into anything else.

Best,

[cayugabirds-l] Willet

2015-08-23 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
Daughter Becky I saw the Willet at Larue's late Friday afternoon.
Several other birders were there looking at it but I didn't have time to
find out who they were.

We enjoyed the beauty of the 20 Caspian terns at Eaton Marsh where we
also saw 2 great egrets several common gallinule preening at the edge
of the reeds.

[cayugabirds-l] Willet at Myer's Point

2014-08-23 Thread Gary Kohlenberg
Ann and I stopped by Myer’s Point this afternoon to try and find a
Sanderling for her year list. When we arrived there was a large wader on the
point. My initial thought was a Greater Yellowlegs until it flew, the bold
black and white wing stripes confirmed it was in fact a WESTERN WILLET. He
moved between Salt Point and Myer’s hunting successfully for crustaceans. One
whole crayfish went down-the-hatch without to much fuss. The Willet seemed
unconcerned with activity at one point being too close to digiscope. I was able
to get a photo just with my bare phone.
The SANDERLING was present and also two SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, one of
which stayed on the island in Salmon Creek.

It may be disheartening to think we are barely past the solstice, yet people are already talking about fall migration, but it's true. Shorebirds are already starting south, or at least dispersing after breeding. Other birds are as well, but the shorebirds are more obvious. I think it was generous of Ken to include the word "early" to try to make you feel more comfortable.--Dave NutterOn Jul 05, 2011, at 05:15 AM, Stephanie Greenwood stgreenw...@ev.ithaca.ny.us wrote:

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Willet at Fair Haven, Sunday, July 3rd

2011-07-04 Thread Kenneth Victor Rosenberg
I had a very similar experience on Saturday evening, July 2, but over in
Presque Isle SP on Lake Erie -- while vacationing with my family I spotted a
WILLET with some Ring-billed Gulls on one of the swimming beaches. I'm pretty
sure mine was an adult bird, so not the same individual but part of the same
early fall movement.

While spending the day with my family at Fair Haven Beach State Park on Lake

minutes before settling back down on the beach. Unfortunately, a group of
small children were chasing the gulls around, causing them to flush repeatedly,
and sometime during the ensuing confusion, the Willet disappeared.

As we were leaving just before 8 PM, the WILLET was back on the beach foraging
near the waters edge. This time I was able to see that it was an immature
plumaged bird. I did snap a few photos of it through my binoculars, but they
came out worse than I expected. The Willet was still at the water's edge when
we left.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Willet, South End

2011-05-03 Thread Dave Nutter
The WILLET was still present from 8:20 to 8:30pm when I decided, due to fading light and wet optics, to pack up my scope and walk home. It was along the Cayuga Inlet shore a short distance north of the mouth of the marina, and indeed visible from the south point of the mouth of the marina, as Jay advertised. The bird had been standing quietly in profile, only turning its head occasionally. As I walked away I heard several Willet-like "peer" calls which faded as if from a bird flying north. I returned, set up my scope again, and did not see a bird where it had stood. I suspect from its calls and the north breeze and wet weather, that it was only flying a very short distance to spend the night, perhaps on the white lighthouse jetty. Anyway, thank-you, Tim Jay, for helping me to add a species to my Ithaca and Luddite lists. --Dave NutterOn May 03, 2011, at 04:02 PM, Jay McGowan jw...@cornell.edu wrote:Found by Tim Lenz, there is a WILLET feeding near Ring-billed Gulls along the shore of the Treman Marina, visible from the west side of the swan pen or the end of drive past the police station and marina.
