nearby, my husband continued calling back until 3 adult owls flew in to
surround our backyard, while a 4th continued to call from a nearby yard. This

Quiet at Dryden Lake this afternoon: some scaup, Canada geese, great blue
heron. Sudden loud vocalizing of an osprey as it carried a large fish with 3
crows in pursuit. Following it with my binoculars, I noted another osprey
directly across the lake - which the crows headed towards as their

Our local backyard sharp-shinned hawk seemed to be following them just above
the treetops in our yard and continuing across the field south of us (he

First canoeing of the season on Dryden Lake yesterday afternoon (sorry for late
post - sore muscles!). Flushed an adult bald eagle from the NE edge of the lake
which flew directly across and perched in trees on the west edge. When we
arrived opposite the main park pavilion some kayaks again
Over the past 2 weeks, I've been helping with Cortland Red Cross swimming
lessons at the Wickwire Pool. After listening to some kind of fledgling raptor
calls for several days, I decided to actively seek them out - and found 2
juvenile merlins with a single adult. They have been a bit stressed

However, it would be best to park by road and walk in - the supposed dirt
road that folks drove on yesterday is actually a newly set drainage tile ditch

Three killdeer together on an icy peninsula in flooded Campbell Meadow (corner
Pinckney/Lower Creek). Turned back to look and there was only one. He remained

Finally was in the right place at the right time this afternoon - discovered

Mid-day Sunday we watched for about an hour as multiple kettles of vultures
appeared over Mt. Pleasant and drifted west over the compost piles on Stevenson
Rd. The groups varied in size from 10-40 birds. Only saw one black vulture
that was part of a group that passed quickly to the south.

We have seen eagles flying over our yard in the past three months, but today as
I was driving over the Etna Mills bridge crossing Fall Creek, there was an
adult eagle sitting in a large tree directly overlooking the stream bed.
Watched for about 10 minutes until traffic forced us to leave.
