We definitely are seeing more black vultures in Chemung County and our environs, though they typically are migrating north.
We now check all vultures seen because we can no longer assume that they will all be turkey vultures. And we get at least 1-2 every year for the past few years on at least 1 of our guided walks. We don’t have too many of us using e-bird, though I am trying to use it regularly, so some might show up on my lists. We do have 2 sites through Facebook but they post everything, mostly regular bird sightings and photographs. Rare birds show up when found. And posted or others are informed, who then post. But this usually happens way after the fact, much to my dismay! It is a lovely place with the following description: a diversity of habitats including grasslands, early successional hardwoods, and white pine-hemlock- hardwood forest leading down to a wetland-marsh at the north end. The elevation of this sanctuary is 1700 feet with nice views of the surrounding country side with benches for visitors to enjoy the view. The soils are alluvial in the Arnot, Chippewa, Lordstown and Mardin soils series. Trails are open to the public during daylight hours. And it has beavers. VERY busy beavers who are creating quite the pond for us. Dave, I keep seeing all your bird reports through your list serve and I always want to come down and join you! We are getting them occasionally now in Broome County. As far as I know, there is limited ebird use in Chemung Co and no email list serve so any reports of good birds is welcome. Its only a 45 minutes drive for us and we would love to hear more about their rarities.
