About 4 Barn Swallows arrived today at their traditional summer home in
our barns. We had begun to worry that we would not see them this year.
In past years we had taken down the previous year's nests, which did not
seem to make any difference to the birds. This year the old nests are
still
Both BARN SWALLOWS and female RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS seem to have arrived
overnight last night to the Montezuma Audubon Center! RWBBs are seen under the
feeders with male RWBB, common grackle, and brown-headed cowbirds. Barn
swallows are swooping around with tree swallows and purple martins, and
Our barn swallows arrived yesterday during the morning hours, 3 in total.
Many more than that left here last fall, I always wonder if some of the
others succumbed to the stress of the trip or moved elsewhere. It looks
like there is enough insect activity for them.
tree swallows seem to have come
Seems our BARN SWALLOWS finally arrived last night, about a week or more
later than usual. There are at least 3 of them in the barn and few flitting
about, a great welcome to a sunny spring day!

This morning there were some 200 Tree Swallows hawking insects at the mouth of
Salmon Creek (Myers town park) accompanied by a dozen Barn Swallows and a
single Northern Rough-winged Swallow (spotted by Jay McGowan) flying up the
lake. No Cliff Swallows that either of us could pick out.

I see hundreds of tree swallows, mixed with barn swallows, over mown fields
during August
Our barn swallows left yesterday, some may have left a few days earlier but
there was a core group that waited until sometime during the day to
depart. I had counted 3 individuals in the spring, there may have been
more that straggled in. A couple of weeks ago I counted around 40
individuals,

We had a few BARN SWALLOWS arrive yesterday, about 10 days later usual. They
were not happy with the house sparrows nesting in their space. SAVANNAH
SPARROWS arrived about 3 days ago.

My resident barn swallows returned to their nest on Thursday 5/2. I also saw
bats for the first time in the air that night.

A friend of mine, Tim Dorn, lives on the west side of the lake, by Buttonwood
Winery, and has Barn Swallows nesting on his dock every year. A few of the
early arrivals were back on Monday the 1st hawking some unseen insects. I don't
know if they had been reported yet.

All 5 baby Barn Swallows were sitting on the edge of their nest when I got home
around 1 yesterday afternoon and the first swooped out of the nest as I
watched. Two more left over the course of the afternoon, at different times.
(I'd check between piano lessons.) Two were left at dusk, and
