In a tree over the Swan Pond at Stewart Park, looked rather ill, around 11 AM
today.

An adult BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON found this afternoon by Ethan Chaffee is
still perched up high in Renwick Woods just inland (east) from the trail
along the inlet just as you reach the lagoon.

Not rare, but fun because they are usually nocturnal, or at least less active
during the day.

I forgot to post this yesterday! Is this a rare bird sighting? I have
pictures, and there is no mistaking this red-eyed beauty! It was about
11am on Friday hunting in a low-leveled water area, on Wildlife Drive. Are
they usually nocturnal? I did not note the name of the "pull-over photo

A juvenile BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON is sitting on a log on the back side
of the swan pen at Stewart Park right now. Hogs Hole earlier this morning
was pretty quiet. Highlights were a Willow Flycatcher, Purple Martins and
the continuing flock of Caspian Terns on the jetty. Yesterday a basic-type

There's a juvenile black-crowned night-heron standing fairly close to the trail
at the swan pen (aka Fuertes sanctuary). Also around was a white-crowned
sparrow, ruby-crowned kinglet, yellow-rumped warbler. Evidently, only
hyphenated birds are allowed there at the moment.

Shortly after 9am I was walking in the big field east of the Lab of O and south of NYS-13 & the airport. I did not see or hear any Swamp Sparrows or Virginia Rails or Eastern Meadowlarks, only traffic. I did venture under the power lines briefly where I flushed an immature BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HER
Today, I lead an SFO trip to Dryden Lake. We parked on the south end of the
lake in the small parking lot. As we headed toward the lake, the night heron
was on the east side of the walk just north of the pasture at the top of a
smallish tree. It suprised all of us. We also heard a Roughed Grouse
That's interesting. The Black-crowned Night-Heron which I've seen regularly this fall before dawn in Six-Mile Creek between Fair and Plain Streets is an adult. I have seen a Muscovy Duck between Wegman's and Nate's months ago. --Dave NutterOn Oct 31, 2010, at 12:05 PM, Paul Anderson wrote:

Inspired by the report from yesterday, I went looking and at 2:30 found
a juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron perched in a tree on the far side
of the inlet directly behind Barnes and Noble.
Nearby, by the entrance to Nate's Floral Estates was what I think was a
Muscovy Duck.
