[cayugabirds-l] Black-billed Cuckoo

2023-05-11 Thread William Baker
I heard, an early for my location, Black-billed Cuckoo calling from the trees/
brush at the upper part of my property on South Rd in Caroline this morning.
Also FOY Ruby-throated Hummingbird, again early for my yard.

[cayugabirds-l] Black-billed Cuckoo

2022-05-11 Thread Geo Kloppel
A Black-billed Cuckoo was singing cu-cu-cu-cu over and over again in the trees
just north of my garden this afternoon (Tupper Rd, West Danby). Not a harbinger
of rain on this occasion, alas! But still welcome: I’m just starting to see
tiny caterpillars, so I hope there will be plenty of cuckoos.

I was just wondering about the BB Cuckoos this morning. On Thursday I heard
one, possibly two, at the Blueberry Patch Campground in the Finger Lakes

[cayugabirds-l] Black-billed Cuckoo flight calling

2014-07-03 Thread Kenneth V. Rosenberg
Last night around 10 PM, I heard the distinctive guttural flight calls of a
BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS above the fireflies in my yard. Could not be a migrant
(either direction) on July 2, rather probably the odd night-time “flying around
and calling” that these birds seem to do in summer — as described previously by
Christ T-H and much earlier by Bill Evans. Strange birds.

[cayugabirds-l] Black-billed cuckoo

2014-06-13 Thread M K Mannella
Strange as it may seem (at least it does to me) we have been regularly hearing
a black-billed cuckoo here in farm country. Just this evening we saw the
elusive bird fly from the telephone wire into the willow and then I lost it in
the maple tree. I figured it to be more of a woodland bird, but there it was
surrounded by barns and uncut, wet hay fields. I am so happy to have finally
seen it, thanks to my husband who noticed a bird whose tail was not flicking up
and down like our resident mockingbird.

[cayugabirds-l] Black-billed Cuckoo 31 May, 01:30AM

2014-05-31 Thread Christopher T. Tessaglia-Hymes
Early this morning, my recording station in Etna, NY was fortunate enough to
have a Black-billed Cuckoo fly almost directly overhead while giving it's
rattle or gurgle call. This is a fine example of this call type which is most
typically heard during nocturnal migration throughout the spring and early
summer within their normal range.

[cayugabirds-l] Black-billed Cuckoo, Orchard Oriole on Freese Road (northeast Ithaca) (technically Dryden)

2013-06-01 Thread Tom Schulenberg
This morning Rufus and I had

1 Black-billed Cuckoo (possibly 2?) in the small stand of trees and shrubs
on the east side of the road, just south of Dyce Lab (201 Freese Road).
Mostly silent, but sang quietly a few times.

1 second summer male Orchard Oriole, singing regularly in the small open
stand of trees on the west side of Freese Road, opposite the community
gardens.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Black-billed cuckoo heard?

2013-03-28 Thread Kevin James McGowan
Black-billed Cuckoo spends the winter in South America (see the map at
http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/black-billed_cuckoo/id), and those
long-distance migrants are amazingly strict in their migratory schedules,
usually not making it back to New York until May.

I just tried making a few species maps in at http://ebird.org/ebird/map/, and
it would appear that there are no records for Black-billed Cuckoo in the United
States in March, ever.

Best,

Kevin

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Black-billed cuckoo heard?

2013-03-28 Thread Jody W Enck
Hi all,
In terms of what species it could have been -- wild turkey comes to my mind.
They are making lots of vocalizations right now, including yelps and clucks
that could definitely sound cuckoo-esque in a wooded environment. I have no
doubt there are other winter resident birds that might be making these
confusing sounds. I hope you hear it again!

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Black-billed cuckoo heard?

I think I that I was hearing a black-billed cuckoo yesterday evening, in the
woods behind my property (Pleasant Valley Rd. in Groton). Is that possible?
Would they be back in our area at this time?

Black-billed Cuckoo spends the winter in South America (see the map at
 http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/black-billed_cuckoo/id), and those
long-distance migrants are amazingly strict in their migratory schedules,
usually not making it back to New York until May.

I just tried making a few species maps in at http://ebird.org/ebird/map/,
and it would appear that there are no records for Black-billed Cuckoo in
the United States in March, ever.

 Best,

 Kevin

According to the Average Spring Arrival Dates for Cay. L. Basin

Cuckoos' date of arrival should be more around May 9 !

their data is from this list and in later years from eBird.

That's a good reminder of those confusing rodent sounds.

I heard an excellent Eastern Phoebe a couple days ago, but immediately said to
myself, whoa there big fella. A few seconds later the NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD went
into a different imitation. Can't say I've heard NOMO do a Black-billed Cuckoo
though.

[cayugabirds-l] Black-billed Cuckoo on Plantations Road (Mundy)

2011-10-10 Thread Meena Haribal
Hi all,
I took my Mundy lunch walk. As I was just getting down from behind Nematode
Green houses, I saw large bird land into a basswood. After some time I could
locate it and could it was a cuckoo. After it moved to couple of hiding places,
I could finally make out that it was a Black-billed cuckoo. Then it flew to a
tree behind USDA green houses, when I could see it tail pattern.
Other than that a Common Merganser was in its usual location.

All the chipmunks and squirrels in Mindy were giving alarm call for ground
predator, first I thought it was due to my presence, then I saw a Coyote walk
across the fenced part of the Mundy, I felt good that I am inside the cage. I
was getting a little worried to walk the path. I kept watch for the coyote as
climbed the hill.
Other than that I counted 28 sulphur butterflies (Colias sp. mostly clouded
yellows) in one small patch, four Monarch butterflies, several Cabbage whites
and a Shadow Darner (Aeshna umbrosa). Nice beautiful day!

Yesterday when I was on Towpath road, here also I saw a quick glimpse of a
cuckoo when it flew along the channel, but could not get any details.

[cayugabirds-l] Black-billed Cuckoo

2011-05-25 Thread Chris Pelkie
Awakened about 5 am by the insistent rapid cu-cu' ing of first of year at my
yard BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, four mi north of Sapsucker Woods.
Finally! Been wondering where the 'rain crows' were during all the rain.

Also a BLACKPOLL WARBLER is still hiding in the neighbor's tall pine tree where
I can't spot it, but singing loud and often. I got some decent pics of the
female on Saturday in my woods but haven't seen the male there (saw several at
SSW last week).

Tried to track down what sounded like a begging nestling crow last evening,
then heard the same moaning again this AM at 645. Not sure where it is but not
easily accessible: appears to be across the creek and possibly Asbury Rd, maybe
in the cemetery trees at Asbury/Triphammer intersection. It's almost male
cat-like (not a Sapsucker: I have them and know their cat-like whine, and
definitely not a Catbird: I have them too!). Coming consistently from the same
place which appears to be at some height off the ground but in thick foliage I
can't see through. What's odd is that I don't see the Crow family hanging
around this year. Any other ideas of what would moan sort of like a cat (maybe
the cat is stuck up a tree)?
