A single Cattle Egret spent a short time with some Trumpeter Swans on the NE

Flew directly South on course for Goose Haven. The cattle herd was in the

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Cattle Egret(s)?

2013-11-05 Thread david nicosia

Later in autumn, storm systems get stronger because the temperature difference
between Arctic and the
tropics is rapidly increasing as the Arctic cools. With stronger storms, the
winds associated with
storms become stronger. Both ahead of a storm (which brings southerly winds)
and behind a storm (which
brings northerly winds) the winds are stronger as autumn progresses. So with
stronger winds in general,
maybe there is more likely to be vagrant birds later in autumn? This is just
one thought on this.

These cattle egrets likely are riding the northerly winds back south. They
simply could be birds that wandered
north after breeding and are heading south on strong northwest winds or it is
possible, I suppose, they were blown north
with last week's strong south winds.  One thing is for sure...you never know
what is out there or what the next
vagrant will be. That is why birding is so exciting especially this time of
year!

Yes, it's very possible the weather pattern brought the Cattle Egrets. Like
most birds they may have ridden the winds which they chose. But the pattern was
of strong and shifting winds, so I wondered, did they ride the recent winds
from the south to arrive here, or were they already north of here and rode the
even-more-recent winds from the north? Or both? Or were they here all along and
we were just lucky to find them after some winds?

The CATTLE EGRET which we saw on the east side of NYS-96 a short distance
north of Bromka Rd in Romulus had a slight wash of blond on the forehead. The
bird on the dock across Treman Marina was much farther away, so it was hard to
see whether it had this wash or not, but Jay showed me a photo he took by
going much closer (after noticing that it did not move when a guy with a big
active dog walked along that side of the marina), and that photo showed a much
whiter forehead. I bet the bird we saw in Romulus will come back again to the
same field, even though the cows are a bit unwelcoming. It came back after
Marty saw it leave yesterday. As for how crazy it is for Cattle Egrets to be
around this late, there seems to be a pattern of them showing up in the basin
well into autumn. I once found one at Goose Haven (along NYS-89 south of South
Spring Pool by Montezuma NWR) in mid-December. I welcome others' theories as
to whether these birds got blown north on
the recent strong south winds or just happened to show up now on their way
south from somewhere else.

Thanks to Jay for getting the word out. Alexa and I first saw it while
headed to the car after a chilly walk around Hog Hole (not too much on the
lake that we could see). The egret was sitting on the marina docks with a
group of gulls, often looking cold but also flying in short circles around
central portion of marina on two occasions. Hopefully the bird sticks
around.

[cayugabirds-l] Cattle Egret in Seneca County

2013-11-02 Thread Marty Schlabach
Driving on Rt. 96 near Romulus about 10:30am this morning I saw what I
suspected to be a Cattle Egret in a field with some dairy cows. I didn't have
my binos with me to check it out. About 1pm today, Mary Jean and our
granddaughter Emma and I went back and confirmed it to be a Cattle Egret. We
watched it for about 15 minutes and then it flew off while we were there. We
drove around the area checking out other fields with cattle or horses but
didn't see it again.

More specific location is route 96 across the road from the Seneca County Law
Enforcement Center in a field with a mixed herd of Jersey and Holstein dairy
cattle.

[cayugabirds-l] Cattle egret request

2012-09-15 Thread John and Sue Gregoire
Hard to believe we've been birding here for 26 years or so and still haven't
found a
Cattle or Snowy in the Finger Lakes. I would very much appreciate a call if the
Cattle is still at MNWR Sunday morning. We can't free up until after AM banding
so
our visit would be noon or later. Ditto for any future finds of either species.
Many
thanks in advance. We have landline only -607-546-2169.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Cattle egret request

2012-09-15 Thread nutter.dave
I met the Cayuga Bird Club field trip at Montezuma NWR today (Saturday 15 September) andlooked for the Cattle Egret around Benning'sbut without luck. I'd also like to know if it is refound.I overheard someone say they'd seen a Least Bittern today at Benning. At Larue's there was a cooperative AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER.Near the spillway a MERLIN was perched in a dead tree.Among the mud debris islands in the new diggings along the straightaway by the Thruwaythere were several each of LEAST SANDPIPER and SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and one SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, but we did not see any Western Sandpiper. Again, any refind of the Western would be of interest. There were plenty of immature BALD EAGLES around Tschache, and at one point we saw at least 7 of them kettling together. Later I saw a more typical group of 9 TURKEY VULTURES.At Knox-Marsellus there was a distant AMERICAN AVOCET and I thought I saw BAIRD'S and BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER in the distant shimmer. BLACK-BELLIED and AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were there, too, I believe. We didn't see any Whimbrels nor Hudsonian Godwits there nor in Puddler. Shorebird numbers are lower, but when they flushed there were still scores of them in flight, mostly Yellowlegs. I did not see any Peregrines, but there was a NORTHERN HARRIER coursing in the area. We saw 1 SANDHILL CRANE at K-M and 3 at Puddler.I diverged from the field trip after Towpath Rd, so I don't know what else they found at Van Dyne Spoor Rd or other places.--Dave NutterOn Sep 15, 2012, at 02:40 PM, John and Sue Gregoire k...@empacc.net wrote:Hard to believe we've been birding here for 26 years or so and still haven't found a Cattle or Snowy in the Finger Lakes. [cayugabirds-l] Cattle egret

2012-09-13 Thread Carol Keeler
The cattle egret was still there when I left Benning Marsh at 10:00. It was by
the thruway when I arrived, but flew toward me and was much closer, but quickly
flew to the grassy area to the left. I often had to wait for the dust clouds
to settle to get a decent view. Those trucks fly through there. There were
two peregrines in the area stirring up the killdeer.

I hope this goes through. I emailed from my iPhone but the server wouldn't
accept it. Any ideas why?

[cayugabirds-l] Cattle egret

2012-09-13 Thread Carol Keeler
Still there at 10:00. Was out by thruway, but flew towards me about half way.
Then it flew into the grasses to the right. Real good looks between dust
storms. There have been two peregrines all about. They kept the killdeer up
at LaRues.

[cayugabirds-l] Cattle Egret

2012-09-13 Thread Carol Keeler
Got to see the Cattle Egret up fairly close. It flew toward me. I hope it
stays for a while so others can see it. I have one of my images of it here, if
you are interested.

http://www.pbase.com/image/146026524

The two Peregrines were cooperative too. They moved around from place to
place, but finally sat for a while in one of the trees near the new shorebird
area. One was noticeably larger than the other. This image is of the larger
bird.

http://www.pbase.com/carol_keeler_photo/image/146026758

Lots of Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs were in the Visitors pool. Lots of
Killdeer other places, but not much else shorebird wise. I was looking for the
Golden Plovers. The Peregrines kept stirring up the birds which didn't help.
Many ducks were around, but not in the main pool.

[cayugabirds-l] Cattle Egret (no), Freese Road sparrows

2011-09-16 Thread Jay McGowan
At 7:10AM this morning, Chris Wood reported a flyover CATTE EGRET on Warren
Road south of Rt. 13, heading SE. Livia and I drove around Bluegrass Lane
and the Game Farm/Compost area in hopes of relocating it a little later in
the morning, but we were unsuccessful. Keep an eye out, though, and let
everyone know if you happen upon this bird!

Lots of gulls at the compost, but nothing out of the ordinary. We walked
around the Freese Road gardens afterwards. The cold front has increased
sparrow diversity slightly there, with 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS and 2 SWAMP
SPARROWS joining the throng of SONG SPARROWS, as well as a continuing
handful of SAVANNAH SPARROWS and FIELD SPARROWS. We had 2 WILSON'S WARBLERS,
1 YELLOW WARBLER, and a NASHVILLE WARBLER in the hedgerow on the east side,
and INDIGO BUNTINGS are still present in the fields as well.

Good birding.

[cayugabirds-l] Cattle Egret, Stewart Park and Treman

2010-10-27 Thread James G. Kohlenberg
While at Stewart Park, around 4:30, a Cattle Egret flew down the shore,
from the east, circled Treman Marina a few times before landing.
I drove over to the marina and found him perched on the docks just
north of the restroom building. Stuart Krasnoff joined me and took some
pictures. The Egret looked to be settling in for the night right in the center
of a flock of Ring-billed Gulls. If anyone was there before dawn they could
probably catch him still roosting.
I'm curious if all seventeen Egrets Tim and Chris saw are still around
Ithaca or just one.
