[cayugabirds-l] Cranes

2022-12-08 Thread Marty Schlabach
We just had a flock of sandhill cranes calling and flying south along the west
side of Cayuga lake. Also multiple flocks of snow geese moving through.

There were no Cranes on Armitage when I arrived but when I moved to Olmstead,
hundreds began flying in. My lucky day!

[cayugabirds-l] Cranes and snow geese

2021-12-18 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
Good morning all, it’s my morning update 

I found a flock of ~4500 snow geese on Route 318, quite close to the road.
Unfortunately though, not a great place to stop because of traffic. I was able
to stop briefly and estimate a count.

Also, the Sandhill Cranes were hanging out in their spot on the corner of
Armitage and Olmstead Roads, better seen from Olmstead.

Have a great day!

As I send this Im looking at the herd (seems more fitting then flock
haha) from Olmstead Road (Savannah) just north of the old weathered formerly
red barn. And to answer the question of how long do the cranes
stay? Here is an answer I sent to someone yesterday: We dont
really know! They havent been in the area long enough, in my opinion, to
say they have typical habits and patterns. Last year we had the
high count around this time in December. There were still cranes in January,
although not as many. In February it snowed and got cold so the ground was
covered and frozen. They left, but the last day of Feb the weather had improved
and I saw 5 on Carncross Road. So it seems like as long as they have access to
the ground, they stay. And just for clarification, they arent just at
Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. We see them in a variety of locations
throughout the Montezuma Wetlands Complex, including at the Knox Marsellus
Marsh, which is MNWR owned. But when I report them, Im seeing them on
private land off Armitage Road. Weve had them at the MAC before, as well
as on DEC lands, so they show up everywhere there is good resting and feeding
space. Alyssa Johnson Environmental Educator Montezuma Audubon Center

[cayugabirds-l] cranes and eagles, oh my

2021-12-11 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
This line from a famous movie came to mind this morning as I watched the 300+
Sandhill Cranes attempt to land in the field on the corner of Olmstead and
Armitage Roads:

"It really was no miracle what happened was just this: The wind began to
switch, the house to pitch, and suddenly the hinges started to unhitch, just
then the Witch! To satisfy an itch, went flying on her broomstick thumbing for
a hitch!"

The wind has been very strong all day, and they eventually were able to land,
but I came upon them as they were still in the sky. I'm not sure how long they
had been jockeying for position, but I watched them for at least 5 minutes
attempting to land. They were facing into the wind and trying to gently touch
down, but the wind was tossing them around. The last several mornings they have
been in this same spot, between 8:30 and 9:30 am. I took a few pictures and
will try to get a count on them, but I'm not convinced all of them were there.
Scragglers kept showing up so, there were likely more already landed or still
coming. The high count that I know of, is 354, and they were counted last
Saturday at Knox Marsellus! I would love to beat that number, if anyone gets a
good count let me know.

Also, Bald Eagles. Since it got cold this week, and the marshes started to
freeze (thawed now!), the eagles seem to be gathering at the Clyde River/Canal
location where 89 goes over. Please do not stop on the bridge to watch them,
very dangerous. I believe you could get good looks if you park near Lock 25 and
walk under the 89 overpass, or just look along the canal in the trees around
the lock area. Also the May's Point fishing access site would be a good place
to park. Lastly, at the south end of the 89 bridge, where it connects back with
the ground, on the west side, you can pull off and get on the other side of the
guard rail. Tschache pool will like also have good eagle viewing as well. As I
drove north on 89 this morning, I saw 2 adults sitting together on a muskrat
lodge. The eagles in the trees around the water were a variety of ages,
probably a dozen or so.

Enjoy and be safe!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Cranes on Armitage

2021-12-10 Thread Asher Hockett
Thanks for keeping the cranes safe in New York!. Here in New Mexico there
is a proliferate population of Sandhills and there is a hunting season. So
there are a lot of cranes, right? Well there were a lot of Passenger
Pigeons too. We have a very bad habit of assigning value to things only
after it is too late.

[cayugabirds-l] Cranes and warbler

2021-06-03 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
Today I found 19 Sandhill Cranes hanging out on the north side of 89, just west
of the 89/31 split south of Savannah. You drive up and over a hill, and the
field on the right (or north side of 89) had 19 Cranes! This is the most I’ve
seen in one spot since December 2020.

Additionally, the male prothonotary warbler was still quite cooperative with
singing and perching on branches within easy viewing on Armitage Rd.

[cayugabirds-l] Cranes and Short-ears

2021-03-11 Thread Geo Kloppel
I visited a few spots in the Northern Montezuma area this afternoon, like
Carncross Road and Van Dyne Spoor, hoping to see some Sandhill Cranes. On the
shoulder of rte 89 a bit south of Savannah I came upon a dead owl. The head was
rather damaged, but the densely feathered toes and the profusion of pale buffy
markings on the wings and tail indicated Short-eared Owl to me.

There are lots of waterfowl in the marshes all around the area, but It wasn’t
until I was driving east across the mucklands on rte 31 that I found the
Cranes: a tight group of five flew right over me.

Towards evening I headed south on 89, and somewhere between Canoga and Red
Jacket a Short-eared Owl flew low over the road shoulder just in front of my
car.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] cranes at MNWR

2020-12-10 Thread Nancy Cusumano
There were 53 cranes in the pool by the visitor center. We got great looks
and got to see them preening and dancing. There are a huge number of geese
and swans behind this small pool, I was very surprised at the number of
swans, as I first mistook them for snow geese.

Several small groups of cranes flew off while we were there, there were 30+
still there when we left. Very glad we made the drive, it was just what my
heart needed today.

Thanks!

On Tuesday, in the early afternoon there were about 65 cranes at the visitor
center pool. When I came back around 3:30 there weren’t any.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] cranes at MNWR

2020-12-10 Thread Johnson, Alyssa
Hi Nancy,

I was out yesterday on a birding tour in the snow, and could not find evidence
of any cranes! Much of the wetlands, especially the shallow ones, are iced over
here. I expect that with this weekend’s warmer temps, that will melt. I don’t
know though if they’ve taken off for the winter!

I checked Sandhill Crane Unit on VanDyne Spoor Road, Knox Marsellus Marsh on
East Road, and the Refuge visitor center flooded field. No cranes. Also checked
the usual corn fields I can find them in. Someone did report to me that they
saw a few on the Route 31 Muck Flats somewhere, but not sure exactly when or
where.

Curious if others are seeing them!

Alyssa

Not sure Nancy.
We stopped doing surveys for the season last week. If you're going, check
ebird and at the Refuge check the visitor Center pool, east rd. (Knox
Marcellus and Puddler marshes), sandhill crane unit (van dyne-spoor rd.),
and Armitage rd.
Good luck. Hope ya see some!

[cayugabirds-l] cranes

2015-03-19 Thread Susan Fast
I went up to the N. Montezuma WMA today looking for SANDHILL CRANES, which I
found.  Saw 2 in looking north from Morgan Rd.; probably the usual pair. Then
drove to the east end of VanDyne Spoor Rd.  Had to park at the pavement end and
walk in; looked too formidable for my 4WD truck.  As I reached the marsh
(appropriately named the Sandhill Crane Unit), I heard a long series of warning
calls from a crane.  I think it was distressed by a pair of ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS
circling overhead; maybe thought they were eagles, which abound in the area.  I
did not see the crane(s).Also saw my FOY CHIPMUNK tracks, and an E.
MEADOWLARK.For the day, I saw 6 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, and 4 GREAT BLUE HERONS.Did
NOT see a single snow goose, although CANADA GEESE are many.Almost no open
water yet.
