[cayugabirds-l] Field Sparrow near Salt Point

2024-01-20 Thread Suan Yong
A field sparrow was foraging on the slope next to Myers Road just north of the
intersection to Salt Point. Took a while to work out its ID, especially with
its torso feathers fluffed out so it looked fatter than a usual field sparrow
look. This was probably around 11am.

[cayugabirds-l] Field sparrow and other observations

2021-04-22 Thread Andrew David Miller
A field sparrow joined the current sparrows (song, white-throated, and a lone
fox) at our feeder station this morning picking through the snow. We last had
a redpoll at our Nyjer feeder on Monday of this week. We were also visited by
a hermit thrush scratching under the feeder station this morning. This happens
rarely, but consistently, every winter where a hermit thrush will show up for a
few hours, pick around for food and then we don't see one for weeks on end. I
have no idea the significance of this since it is not a bird I associate with
feeders, but I thought it was an interesting observation to share.

I had a Field Sparrow in my window feeder today and I think it was there
yesterday too, but didn't recognize it right away as I have never had one

[cayugabirds-l] Field Sparrow

2016-04-14 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Of late our Junco numbers have begun dwindling. Sorry to see them go,
but at this time of year the call of nature compels them to start
dispersing/migrating to their "nesting grounds". The bright side of
this is that often they are replaced, at least temporarily, with new
birds. This was the case this morning when I looked out the window and
saw some different looking sparrows. With binocs I was pleasantly
surprised to see two very attractive FIELD SPARROWS foraging side by
side. They had apparently just "dropped in" (literally??) to see what
all the bird activity was about. Interestingly, I seem to recall that
whenever we've had this species in our yard, it has only been a single
individual.

Although it's not typically a species I think of as a feeder visitor, we

[cayugabirds-l] Field Sparrow back

2013-04-16 Thread Kathy Strickland
Stepped outside to head to Syr this morning and the sweet song of my Field
Sparrow greeted me, FOS.

Observed on yesterday's drive along 520 just west of MNWR--Ospreys present on
5 of the 7 nest structures. Later I watched an Osprey dip into the entrance
pool at the Refuge (startling several Mallards in the process) and grab a
talonful of algae which it took to the nest (badly damaged over the winter)
along the river. Along River Rd there were several DC Cormorants in the river,
and at Mud Lock a Bald Eagle flew in with food and proceeded to feed the
youngsters.

Beautiful little bird with its pink bill and bright white eye ring.
(I've never really taken particular note of the eye ring before.) Hope
