FOY at feeder this morning. Follows a female Oriole yesterday. Now if only
the warblers would make the climb to this chillier hilltop. Envious of
those lowland reports.

[cayugabirds-l] Hummer

2021-05-05 Thread Carol Keeler
Well, all my expected migrants showed up this week. A hummingbird showed up
this morning. It was eating from flowers on a weed in my patio. I’ve often
believed that they will go to a natural food source before the feeder. I’ve
had my feeders out for a week now and again I saw it on a flower rather than
the feeder. I bought a lot of flowers yesterday and they are accessible though
protected on the front porch. I won’t plant for weeks.

Last week the Oriole, Rose Breasted Grosbeak, and Catbird arrived. The week
before that the Purple Finches arrived. I still have some White Throated
Sparrows and a few White Crown Sparrows. I’ve also had a one day stop over of
male and female Towhees. Last week the House Wren showed up.He’s singing
daily. My pair of Tree Swallows is back and nesting. I had a single Barn
Swallow fly over when I was mowing. No warblers yet. I usually have yellow
and Common Yellowthroats out back. I always get a Warbling Vireo too which I
haven’t heard yet. Ah spring.

2020-05-13 Thread Donna Lee Scott
1 or more of my many orioles yanked off 2 of the 4 bee guards from my H-bird
feeder so they could drink more easily! Even broke one bee guard!
Still no H-bird here.

I saw 2 different Indigo Buntings today & just saw my FOY American Redstart.
Also 2 female Rose breasted Grosbeaks with one male & 1 of “my” Brown Thrashers.

Just had my first Ruby Throated Hummingbird come in to a feeder. It was a
gorgeous male. It came to the Oriole nectar feeder which the Orioles haven't
used yet. It's jelly for them. I have two male Orioles and one female so far.
The Grosbeaks may have just been passing through so I've just missed seeing
them at the feeders. Still have lots of White Crowned Sparrows. It's a great
day for birds!

Rufous Humming Bird at Marty's house in Interlaken seen feeding 6 times from
4:25 PM until 5:45 or later, this afternoon.
Lee Ann Van Leer arrived and we saw it briefly, but it zoomed away; I decided
to leave in case the bird didn't like 2 observers sitting there watching it, so
Lee Ann would be able to get a longer look. I hope she did.

[cayugabirds-l] hummer still present: possible rufous??

2012-10-16 Thread Marty Schlabach
I saw the hummer again today, about 3:30pm. I happened to be within about 5
feet of the feeder when it showed up (working on winterizing an exterior door,
no camera handy). I got a better look and did indeed see a rusty hue on its
side when it perched on the feeder. I didn't get a good look at the tail. Its
back was green, quite dark, and it had some spots/stripes on its throat on an
otherwise quite white throat, breast and belly. I'm not very knowledgeable
about hummingbirds, just describing what I've now seen up close. It showed up
again about 4:30pm, while I was watching with a camera. Unfortunately, the
light wasn't good for a picture. I got a decent silhouette, if anyone is
interested in that. Saw it again about 5:00pm. It's coming to a feeder on the
north side of our house. Birders are welcome to stop by, hangout on the north
patio and try to get a look, even if we aren't home.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Hummer in Mecklenberg

2012-09-27 Thread David McCartt
As of yesterday morning we had a female coming to our feeder too.  I think our
breeders  departed on 9/12 but beginning again on 9/23 we've had one daily,
with the exception of today (could have just missed seeing it this AM).  I
suspect this latest bird is a migrant that has chosen to stop and refuel for
awhile.  It is a noticeably chunkier looking than the birds seen earlier this
month. Don't know if it is fluffed up due to the temperatures or if it has
added fat in preparation for migration.
