[cayugabirds-l] Hummingbirds

[Charisse]

I had four hummingbirds visit my oriole feeder this evening on E Enfield
Center Rd this evening starting around 8 pm. They stayed and flitted around
and fussed at each other for about an Hour.

I just told a friend to keep cleaning and refilling her hummingbird feeder 
until after the frost, since some resident & migrating hummingbirds might need 
it!
Hummingbirds don’t know about Labor Day -which for some humans is supposed to 
mean everything summery ends!

[cayugabirds-l] Hummingbirds

We are having a remarkable time with hummingbirds right now. After a summer 
with our resident male and female, then two youngsters, we are currently 
hosting at least ten if not twelve hummers. They put on quite a show in the 
morning, either sparring with one another, or playing games. They also get into 
arguments with Monarch butterflies and get into some interesting aerial 
activities trying to chase them off. 

Keeping a close eye on the hummingbirds in case a wanderer from the West makes 
its way here.

[cayugabirds-l] Hummingbirds

We have a hummingbird feeder, but it's not in a place where we can always 
monitor it. We first saw it used on 19 May by a female Ruby-throated 
Hummingbird. It was several days before we saw one/her again, but we now 
believe she visits regularly, although she is quiet and would be easy to 
overlook. 

On Tuesday (6 June) afternoon I was by Newman Golf Course wondering about the 
possibility of Yellow-throated Warblers in the Sycamore trees, and I noticed 
that those trees' foliage looks sparse. (I think the newest leaves are dying. 
If anyone knows what's going on with them please let me know.) While I was 
stopped I saw a female hummingbird at some weeds nearby, carrying what looked 
like a wad of Cottonwood fluff in her bill. This white blob made her easy 
enough to follow that I saw where she took it. She's building a nest on the 
fork of a Sycamore twig. It has lots of fluff with several bits of lichen 
attached. I've checked several times since, and only seen her at work in the 
middle of the day, not early morning nor late evening, but there seems to be 
progress still. I'll keep you updated if I note any milestones.

this AM there were 4 female / immature types visible at once from my kitchen 
window - one sitting and shivering on each of my 3 feeders and one perched next 
to a pineapple sage plant (which was covered with a sheet because of the 
frost).  I have been seeing 1-2 at a time almost every day the last few weeks 
(after a lifetime high for me of 12 at once on Aug 14) - seeing 4 at once this 
late in the season was an unpleasant surprise.  I wish they would leave for

[cayugabirds-l] Hummingbirds

I thought I had just one regular hummingbird still coming, but I just found 
that I have two!  They were arguing over the feeder.  One, of course, may be a 
migrant female that my regular might be chasing away.  
The yard birds are very busy this morning.  I'm seeing some friends I haven't 
seen in a while.  There are lots of Goldfinches eating flower seeds.  I also 
spotted a Catbird and a Song Sparrow with several Blue Jays noisily flying 
through .  I'll never get my breakfast eaten at this rate.

busy all summer preforming their manly duties to all the females in their

Interesting following the comments on sightings and missing RT Hummingbirds.  
Still have our female and juvenile here in Big Flats. No males. Actually, we 
are seeing more activity than during the first half of the summer.

I have a theory on why they sometimes seem to disappear in summer, only to 
return. I think they have just found a new, better food source that may be 
temporary. It comes to mind that insects are good source of protein for them.

So, today, I observed our female RTH land on the stalk below the Monarda didyma 
flower head, and pick something from under the dried flower head.  I theorize 
it is small spiders or similar insects.  She then took flight to draw nectar 
from the few remaining flowers on adjacent stalks and again perched under a 
dried flower head to pick something from underneath.

We still have hummingbirds at our two feeders on Elm Beach Road, W side of
Cayuga Lake, and I've seen them at another feeder down the road. Curiously,
we have only females, which has been true for years. There MUST be males
out there but they seem self-sufficient.

I am wondering why the males leave earlier than the females in the fall?  I
know that they return in May earlier to establish territory for mating, but
why do they leave earlier in the fall?

Interesting following the comments on sightings and missing RT Hummingbirds.  
Still have our female and juvenile here in Big Flats. No males. Actually, we 
are seeing more activity than during the first half of the summer.

I have a theory on why they sometimes seem to disappear in summer, only to 
return. I think they have just found a new, better food source that may be 
temporary. It comes to mind that insects are good source of protein for them. 

So, today, I observed our female RTH land on the stalk below the Monarda didyma 
flower head, and pick something from under the dried flower head.  I theorize 
it is small spiders or similar insects.  She then took flight to draw nectar 
from the few remaining flowers on adjacent stalks and again perched under a 
dried flower head to pick something from underneath.
