When crows get to chatting I always thought Parliament of Cows was more descriptive and it applies to Barred Owls also. I know this isn't Cayuga basin however: Yesterday, while in a Louisiana swamp, I watched a couple of blackbirds harassing a black vulture. One of the harassers actually alighted on the vulture's back and vulture surfed for about 200 meters. Couldn't tell the species for sure from a distance but lots of red-winged blackbirds and starlings around. Thought someone might be interested. Perhaps there is some logic behind it. Hm... While I do love the old poetic terms for animal gatherings, I tend to agree with Kevin. After all, many birds kill and eat other animals , so why crows should be singled out as the only murderers in the bird world I don't know. No-one seems to get bent out of shape when our noble Peregrine Falcon nails some hapless shorebird. Or our charismatic Great Horned Owl nails a bunch of baby Peregrines in their nest, come to think of it. How come THEY don't have such nicknames. And the irony is the murders often form when (the crows fear that?) a crow is threatened... They don't go after prey in flocks; they group in response to THEIR predators, immediate or potential. One reason these odd collective nouns haven't been assigned to Peregrines or Great Horned Owls is just that those birds don't noticeably flock. Come to think of it, the connotations of flock are mostly unflattering too. Etymologically, a flock is a crowd of followers, whose collective behavior doesn't display individual initiative. Think of sheep, or rustic parishioners. Anglo-Saxon poetry, often and not surprisingly about war, death, and mayhem, associates ravens with battlefields. While a raven is not a crow, the association of death (murder) with black carrion eaters is not too far-fetched. After all, many birds kill and eat other animals , so why crows should be singled out as the only murderers in the bird world I don't know. No-one seems to get bent out of shape when our noble Peregrine Falcon nails some hapless shorebird. Or our charismatic Great Horned Owl nails a bunch of baby Peregrines in their nest, come to think of it. How come THEY don't have such nicknames.
