A peregrine falcon swooped by low and fast between Caldwell Hall and Martha
van Rennselaer Hall on the Cornell campus at about 8:10 this morning. It
was chasing another bird unsuccessfully as it was navigating a slalom

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Peregrine Falcon, Stewart Park

2016-01-12 Thread Dave Nutter
For what it’s worth, there was a dead Canada Goose in the middle of the Stewart
Park ice shelf on Sunday afternoon. I don’t know what killed it, but a
Peregrine today on that or another goose carcass does not necessarily mean that
the Peregrine killed it. Maybe the goose carcass is simply an easier source of
food at the moment. I’ve seen a video of a falconer’s Gyrfalcon killing a
Canada Goose, and it was a long difficult project for that more powerful
predator to take down, subdue, and kill such a big prey. It was also a long
process for a Peregrine to kill a Willet (ultimately by drowning as I recall),
which SFO witnessed in NJ a few years back. Ducks and gulls are more likely
items than a goose for a Peregrine to kill, which I’ve also seen a Peregrine
upon at Stewart Park in the past. Although I did not witness the actual duck
kill, I saw from a distance the Peregrine stoop. Then again, there’s a lot of
geese, and perhaps one was too slow or complacent.

By the way, Stuart Krasnoff & I had great looks at an adult Peregrine Falcon at
Myers Point on Sunday afternoon.

[cayugabirds-l] Peregrine Falcon

2014-03-26 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,
Just now an adult Peregrine passed my window up very close, may be something
like 20 feet and circled and headed west. No, but actually it has turned back
and headed towards Vet School and beyond.

BTW, the Tower Road is perfect east-west road. I think on a equinox sun should
rise from the east of the road and set across the road behind the McGraw Tower!

Cheers

You're strict! We've always used any bird that can be seen from the yard. I

that same type guideline is used for point counts, big sits, big squats and

I have actually seen the bird there many mornings in recent weeks, when I drive

morning), but have not been in a position to stop and get bins on it to
identify until today.

2013-02-14 Thread nutter.dave
I still hope Melissa has a chance to write her story and show any photos (of any quality) soon. She described to me what I interpreted as TWO Peregrine Falcons cooperatively and successfully hunting a gull and then sharing the meal, includingcalling, begging, and allo-feeding. Maybe the Peregrines are just passing through, but I think about courtship and the possibility of a pair breeding locally. Everyone in the Cornell community can be part of the eco-system and contribute with their food scraps which go to the compost piles and feed the gulls.--Dave NutterOn Feb 13, 2013, at 11:01 PM, nutter.d...@me.com wrote:About 11:30am I got a phone call from Melissa Groo, who had gone to Stewart Park in search of the Peregrine. [cayugabirds-l] Peregrine Falcon

2012-11-03 Thread Meena Haribal
Hi all,

I went to my front yard to pick up my moth light for winter storage when a dark
looking large falcon came into view coming low along Six Mile Creek not very
far from the house. It continued flying along Rt 79 quite some distance in
Southeast direction. I also found a small group of small finches flying over my
house across Six Mile Creek.

Yesterday, afternoon from my office window I watched a compact stubby looking
Sharp-shinned hawk circle around in front of my office window and head
northeast!

[cayugabirds-l] Peregrine Falcon, Iceland Gull

2011-12-14 Thread Dave Nutter
On Tuesday afternoon I biked over to Treman State Marine Park hoping for a better look at the Iceland Gull I'd scoped on the red lighthouse breakwater Monday afternoon from Stewart Park during a brief taxi break. When I stopped at the marina, noting the 2 continuing juvenile BRANT, I was surprised to see in the distance that the red jetty breakwater was nearly devoid of birds - just 3 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, 2 HERRING GULLS and a pair of MALLARDS, rather than the hundreds of gulls I'd expected. With the scope I saw a good reason: On the base of the red lighthouse stood an immature PEREGRINE FALCON picking at the carcass of an immature Great Black-backed Gull. I wish I'd seen that encounter. Within a couple minutes the falcon started walking around restlessly, then flew out over the lake and back toward the marina to land in some unseen perch in the big trees to my north. I checked out the numerous gulls on the docks in Treman Marina, but couldn't see anything unusual, so I walked to the lakeshore. Looking back I could see that the lawn on the east end of Stewart Park was crowded with gulls, perhaps also refugees of the peregrine attack. An hour later as I was passing by the marina again, for some unknown reason many of the gulls took flight, and I was able to pick out an ICELAND GULL, which conveniently re-settled atop one of the posts. I think it was either a second or third winter bird. Although it had very pale brown streaking, giving it an off-white appearance in flight, it also had a pale gray mantle, and a very pale yellowish bill with a grayish ring near the tip. It had a cuter, small-billed and round-headed profile than most Herring Gulls although its bulk was the similar to Herring. In flight it appeared broad-winged, and the undersides of the wings were white. Close inspection of the wings at rest showed some extremely pale brown into the primaries, which at first glance had appeared white.Waterfowl off Stewart were much the same as lately. HOODED MERGANSERS, and COMMON GOLDENEYE numbers are up over the past few days. I saw no Ruddy Ducks nor scaup, but a male CANVASBACK has joined the small group of REDHEADS. --Dave Nutter

Yard bird!! Actually, I was able to scope it through trees from my dining room window, and my non-birder wife and son saw it too. About 4:05 pm it flew, though. Thanks, Bill! This was a much better view than Bradfield Hall would've been. Everyone else, keep your eyes peeled for a Peregrine Falcon downtown. --Dave NutterOn Dec 11, 2010, at 12:44 PM, Dave Nutter nutter.d...@me.com wrote:3:40pm Sat 11 Dec Bill Baker just called to say there's a PEREGRINE FALCON perched on one of the lower steeples of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on the corner of North Geneva and West Seneca Streets in downtown Ithaca. [cayugabirds-l] peregrine falcon at Cornell

2010-10-28 Thread Jody W Enck
Hi folks,
I watched a silhouette of a peregrine first fly by, then land,
on Bradfield Hall on the Cornell campus around 7:30 this morning. The local
pigeons should be scared...very scared.
Also, right after sunset last evening I heard a Carolina Wren
tea-kettling away in my yard in Ellis Hollow while I was trying to rake some
leaves.
