Re: [cayugabirds-l] Purple Finches

Hi Laurie and all,

I usually have a few Purple Finches at my winter feeders. About six lately. But
my brother in Interlaken gets the congener House Finches instead. Guess it just
depends on where you are situated!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] purple Finches

2022-02-06 Thread Geo Kloppel
My (mostly sunflower) feeding operation at home (West Danby) has attracted
about 20 Purple Finches daily for the last week or so, along with a similar
number of White-throated Sparrows, and the usual Goldfinches, Chickadees,
Tufted Titmice, White and Red-breasted Nuthatches, Carolina Wrens, Juncos,
Mourning Doves, Cardinals, Blue Jays, Downy Woodpeckers, Hairy Woodpeckers,
Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Flickers, Pileated Woodpeckers, Crows and Turkeys.
Actually the larger woodpeckers are feasting mostly at a badly infested ash
tree. A Flicker is extracting marmonated stink bugs from the crevices in my
house’s ship-lap siding. A tight group of Cedar Waxwings is usually somewhere
nearby. The local Raven pair is very evident. I’ve watched an immature Cooper’s
Hawk try her luck near the feeders several times. I expect I could find a
Ruffed Grouse or two if I tramped around in snowshoes.

[cayugabirds-l] Purple finches in the snow

2020-04-26 Thread Laura Stenzler
Hi all,
It's hard to believe, but it's snowing again up here on Hunt Hill Rd, Sunday
afternoon at 6:20. The goldfinches and purple finches are frantically chowing
down on sunflower seeds before it gets dark. And, we have a record 5 male and 4
female purple finches! The maximum goldfinch number was 16 today, which
happens to be my Cornell Feederwatch day! I hope they all have nice, sheltered
spots for tonight. It's likely to keep snowing.
Happy spring!

2018-03-08 Thread Laura Stenzler
Hi all,

We still have a group of around 13 Purple Finches coming to our feeders. I've
seen up to 4 brilliant purple males and the rest are either young males (mostly
female plumage with some purple on the throat) or female plumaged individuals.
Yesterday we had our first 3 turkeys of the year, and a brief visit by a

[cayugabirds-l] Purple Finches/poss white bodied TV

2016-04-01 Thread Donna Lee Scott
2 gorgeous male PURPLE FINCHES at my backyard feeders just now!
Have seen one there for a few days.

Also, with all the reports of birds with unusual white feathers lately, here is
another: a new student in SFO who is a beginning birder, phoned me yesterday
to report that she thinks she saw on E. Shore Drive (NY Rt. 34), Lansing, near
Rod and Gun Club, a TURKEY VULTURE with a white BODY (not wing). It had the red
head she said and was sitting on ground near the road as they drove by. She is
pretty sure she knows what TVs look like.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Purple Finches

2015-04-26 Thread Melanie Uhlir

Oh no!

I confess that I try to avoid information about wildlife mortality due
to excessively softhearted wishful thinking.

Is this sudden death of finches unusual, or is it due to possible
starvation conditions due to the harsh and long winter, not remediable
by the arrival of migrating birds finding stocked feeders?
