For anyone who missed them earlier in the season, a juvenile SANDERLING is
foraging near the end of the spit at Myers Point. Also several flocks of
NORTHERN PINTAIL going down the lake and a group of 16 TERNS, mostly COMMON
with at least one FORSTER'S, just went by heading north.

When I was at Myers this morning, the SANDERLING was in the grassy part of
the spit area. I have some digiscoped photos here:

There was also a really nice breeding-plumage LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL,
three kinds of swallow, and an OSPREY checking out the new Salt Point
platform.

There is an apparent SANDERLING out on the spit at Myers Point. It's giving
me some weird impressions and is in dull basic plumage, but does appear to
be a (very early) Sanderling. I'll take a look at my photos later to
confirm, but wanted to get the word out now.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Sanderling, Myers Point

2011-09-04 Thread Dave Nutter
I tried for the Sanderling(s) at Myers today (4 Sept) without success  Laurie is away with the car, so I biked there, and I got a late start, arriving about 11am.  There were 6 beginnner sailboarders in the swimming cove, but the spit had plenty of Ring-billed Gulls (I later counted 64).  However the shorebirds were all on the muddy island in Salmon Creek.  I counted a maximum of 5 KILLDEER, 6 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, 1 LEAST SANDPIPER, and 1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER.  There was also a GREEN HERON hiding along the far shore, near where I did not see the Black-crowned Night-Heron today, even though Melissa Groo (did I get your name right?), who was photographing the shorebirds, said it was around.  Myers was very pleasant, especially contrasting with biking up to Todd's Beach House (the high point along East Shore Drive, at the corner of Drake Rd) from either direction.  The sandpipers are nice for my Luddite List, but considering how sore by butt is and how tired my legs are, I really was hoping for a new species for me for 2011 in the Cayuga Lake Basin.--Dave NutterOn Sep 03, 2011, at 02:09 PM, "J.
