[cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owls at Ithaca Tompkins International Airport
Last night, for the second night in a row, I was able to spot at minimum two (2) SHORT-EARED OWLS at the Airport. They were seen at varying times and distances, foraging over the fallow fields within the confines of the Ithaca Tompkins International Airport, as viewed from Snyder Road behind the airport. Best vantage point seems to be where the fence makes a 90° bend and heads due south. One distant individual at 5:25pm and two nearby, yipping and barking at 5:50pm. I was joined by Keigan Case for the fortuitous display by the latter two birds. It seems that while solo, the forage fairly low over the fields and can be difficult to spot. Once there is interaction occurring, they will elevate and become more noticeable against the sky. I had to pick up my daughter at the Ithaca Airport last night, so I went early (5:30) to see the Short-eared Owls. From Snyder Road near the western corner of the solar farm, I watched one in flight for several minutes. The snow was flying too, and when the light dimmed, I walked SE along the road to the point where it turns east and leaves the airport fence. Watchers there had seen several owls. I briefly caught sight of another one silhouetted against the lighted buildings across the distant runway. Eventually I turned and retraced my steps. At about 6:25 I was again walking past the solar farm. It was completely dark, but I could hear the owls barking and screaming just over the fence. At 6:30 my daughter’s plane came in from the SE, drowning out the owls and telling me it was time to leave. Lots of fun! Hi all, I hope everyone is aware already, but I thought I'd mention here that several Short-eared Owls, up to 4-5 individuals, have been seen foraging over the runways at the Ithaca-Tompkins airport, usually just before 6pm from about the middle of Snyder Road. They don't come out every night, but seem to be seen more often than not. Thursday night in the fog they were interacting and calling a lot, with four individuals often visible at once. Last night, Joe Wetmore and I watched 5 short-eared owls plying the fields on both sides of Lake Road leading west from Long Point Winery, just south of Aurora. We spotted the first one around 5 pm. At Long Point winery above East side Cayuga Lake yesterday evening. Friend Bill & I saw one close by in field off Lg Pt Rd bouncing around in tall grass - taking short flights over grass then landing again, several times. It stood tall in grass looking around giving good binoc views of its face. Then after sunset when owl flew away, down towards grape arbor, & out of sight, I pulled car off Rt 90 just below winery & the other brew house & was delighted to see 2 S E Owls sitting in 2 different small deciduous trees, silhouetted in the orangey fading sunset! On our way back from Montezuma this afternoon, Joe Wetmore and I took a quick detour down Lake Rd towards Long Point Winery to look for short-eared owls. Caught a quick glimpse, I believe, of Laura Stenzler, but no owls. It was getting late, so we headed back south on Rt 90. Almost immediately after making the turn onto the main road, Joe spotted the short-eared owls in the farm fields on the east side of 90. Not the greatest place to pull over, but in the quickly waning light, I was able watch one flap across the field just below the tree-line. Other highlights included a lot of common goldeneyes seen from the Wells boathouse, distant views of a large raft of snow geese mid-lake, and at Montezuma, a harrier and a bald eagle at Tschache Pool, another harrier at Mays Point Pool, as well as some entertaining muskrats swimming among the many lodges at Mays. A great little adventure. The only disappointment was that the Wildlife Drive was not open. Perhaps I misunderstood that it would be open from another post on the listerv. A group of us watched four (unless that fourth one doubled back unnoticed to join the other three) of the Scofield Road SHORT-EARED OWLS just after sunset yesterday (Wednesday). They spent most of their time over the western side of the large field located to the west of the road. From the Long Point Winery on Lake Road, Steve Fast and I saw three Short-eared Owls, the first one seen at 4:45 (that was when we arrived there) flying north of the road. I saw one in the wing at about 1530 today, over fields just south of Aurora off NYS Rte 90. I and others have seen SEOs there many times in the past over the years. Has anyone seen them recently near the Evergreen Cemetery W of NYS 34B on the Levana Road in Scipio? [cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owls at Van Dyne Spoor
About 5:30pm today (Thursday 24 April) Ann Mitchell I were on Van Dyne Spoor Rd when I noticed a SHORT-EARED OWL flying north toward us over the middle of the flooded marsh. It then proceeded to hunt along either side of the ditch which runs along the north side of the road. We had prolonged excellent views in broad daylight as we stood outside the car. Several times the owl came past us as it hunted, and several times it pounced in the grass, but without success. After it moved beyond us we continued driving east, and passed it when it perched atop a small tree. A few minutes later as we went west again, we again passed a SHORT-EARED OWL. Then we were confused because we saw a SHORT-EARED OWL hunting ahead of us. Indeed there were TWO giving us great looks while they hunted the same strip of land. At one point one of them pounced and stayed down, apparently successful, but remained visible to us. This was one of the best looks at the species I've had and a surprise this late in the season. I considered whether they were here to breed, but this did not seem to be a pair becaus both appeared to be males, with white (not ochre) bellies. We did not scan similar habitat to look for additonal owls. I scanned north with no success but immediately found two looking due south. I'm not certain but I feel a better place to see them would be from East Road but we did not try. Finally made it up to Morgan Road today on the way home from Oswego. About 18 folks were gathered to view the possible evening's flight. After several distant possibilities and half the group leaving for Carncross Road, we headed to our car where the 90-degree angle of the buildings funneled in the distinctive bark of hunting owls. The remnant of 6 birders quickly relocated and were treated to an up close fly-by and several minutes of watching two owls flit back and forth over the field. Hi all, After these first few owls flew by the buildings on Morgan Road (they didn't come out until about 5:45), Scott Haber, Susan Newman and I decided to head down to the distant birds near Carncross Road, where we could see birds fighting with each other and perching from afar. When we arrived at Carncross Road, we found a close bird flying by over the newly constructed bridge, headed back towards Morgan Road. (This may have been the bird that Colleen saw at about the same time). We also had a distant bird near the treeline to the Northeast and a very close and cooperative bird hunting back and forth over the berm just to the north of the road, for a total of 6 birds in the immediate area. As part of the group that relocated to Carncross Rd. this evening where we had excellent looks at three Short-eared Owls, I should note that the distant possibilities that Colleen referred to were indeed distant Short-eared Owls. They were quite far out and we tried to help many in the large group get visuals on them, but they were constantly in view towards the direction of Carncross, which is why we ended up heading that way. [cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owls again
The Short-eared Owls at Morgan Road put on another nice show for people tonight, appearing about 5:15 and hunting in some of the close fields, as well as occasionally sitting up in the trees and poles on the dikes. At least seven were visible tonight, as well as two Rough-legged Hawks. After leaving a little before 6:00, Livia and I decided to check East Road, where we were rewarded by a distant Short-eared Owl flying high over Knox-Marsellus to the Mucklands, then three MORE Short-eared Owls hunting along the grassy area between East Road and Knox-Marsellus, offering great views from the overlook on East Road. They seem to be in a lot of places this year! Not too much else to report from a snowy day around the lake. Waterfowl are concentrated at Harris Park and north of the railroad bridge at the north end of Cayuga Lake. Nothing out of the ordinary but lots of birds. Dave and I did go to Morgan Road today. We got there about 5:15 and were immediately rewarded with 5 Short-eared Owls. Dave counted a total of ten owls and saw two successfully with voles. Apparently, there are many rodents in the fields for them to feast on. The Audubon Educator was there surveying the owls. He said they came out today at 4:45. Gary and I scoured the Ovid area for SHORT-EARED OWLS, but Usually if you see Northern Harriers, you see Short-eared Owls. There were none of either species. There was lots of corn in the fields. I think the owls like hay better. The search is on. Mary Jean called me 3 times today, all in the neighborhood of 5pm. First she and Emma, our 3 year old granddaughter, saw 3 short-eared owls on Wycoff Rd just west of Rock River Rd. Then minutes later 2 owls on Wycoff Rd just east of Rock River Rd, followed by 1 near the intersection of Wycoff Rd and Hall Rd. These are essentially the first sightings of the season in that area where we've been regularly seeing them in recent years. We and several others have checked the area numerous times over the last couple of months without any sightings. Could there be a correlation between the arrival of winter and the arrival of the short-ears? Hi All, Yesterday, Gary Kohlenberg and I went to Rafferty Road to scout for SE Owls. Rafferty Road was pretty much plowed and was dirt. We drove around the area, but still no good grassland for the bird. We did find 6 Pheasants though. We road down to the diner, but no luck, then back up to the field across from Rafferty Road on Rte 90. No luck. Today we went to Scofield Road in Lansing, but didn't get there until 4:45 P.M. We had great looks at a playful Ermine. Finally, before darkness overtook us, a SE Owl appeared. There might be more than one owl, but it just became too dark to see much. Good luck if you go there. Bard, Susie I stopped at Rafferty Rd. (King Ferry area) late this afternoon and saw 3 SHORT-EARED OWLS. All were easily seen from the road, near the red barn. The first appeared at 1729, the other two, a minute later. We watched them for 10 minutes until the light faded. One was on the south side of the road, the other 2 on the north. The latter 2 had a brief encounter and we heard 1 screechy-hiss. We saw nothing at Dixon Rd.; probably too much snow. Also on Rafferty was 1 AMER. KESTREL. S. S. [cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owls - Ovid
I've been seeing, very regularly, 3 short-eared owls on Wycoff Road in Ovid. This evening, however, there were 4. These owls are quite vocal and it is a real treat to see them and hear them. Wycoff Road is between Hall Road and Rock River. Park on Wycoff, just east of Rock River, and look east. The owls rise up from behind the Beardsley farm on Rock River cross back and forth across Wycoff, often perching on a fence post. Those of you may remember the farm from the owl trip two years ago--they come back every year. After awhile one of the Red-tails flew in and dislodged the owls who then continued foraging while emitting an occasional soft bark call. We watched 3 short-eared owls and one norther harrier on Rock River Road last night around 5:30. One owl gave a sat for a long pose on a fence post - the light was perfect to see the color differences of the neck and face while he turned his head about, even with no binoculars!
