[cayugabirds-l] Virginia Rail

2021-05-04 Thread Geo Kloppel
A hidden Virginia Rail gave me a grunt display at ridiculously close range
(10’?) this morning in Michigan Hollow marsh, Danby (not to be confused with
the North Spencer Marsh near the south end of Michigan Hollow Road, where BTW
the bridge is closed).

[cayugabirds-l] Virginia Rail

2018-04-12 Thread Ann Mitchell
I stopped at Eaton Marsh to look at the Ross’s Goose, and heard a VIRGINIA RAIL
grunting in the marsh! The goose is still present on the back side of the pond.

[cayugabirds-l] Virginia Rail yard bird in Brooktondale

2017-07-19 Thread Sandy Podulka
After years of looking for rails and playing tapes unsuccessfully on
our property, we finally saw a Virginia Rail walking along the
driveway! It quickly ran into the grasses and called and another one
answered it. It's been a while since we had a new yard bird here in
Brooktondale!

[cayugabirds-l] Virginia Rail

2017-05-02 Thread Geo Kloppel
West Danby this evening: I found a Virginia Rail as usual in the little marsh
on Hillview Road beside the old county landfill. Others are likely to be
present nearby, like in the Cayuga Inlet headwater marsh just west of the
landfill cap, along abandoned Center Schoolhouse Road.

[cayugabirds-l] Virginia Rail, West Danby

2014-04-24 Thread Geo Kloppel
At 7:00 pm a Virginia Rail was calling from the cattails on the south side of
Hillview Road, West Danby, alongside the former Tompkins County landfill. The
marsh is about 100 yards wide there, and the rail was near the back, where it
meets the grassy mound capping the old landfill.

At about 10:00 am a Broad-winged Hawk flew through my yard with nest material.

I heard one at Martin's Tract. From the parking lot walk the part beside the
pond. I walk until I was next to the water. It called from there. Also. I saw 3
Caspian Terns at the north end of the lake. Ann

[cayugabirds-l] Virginia Rail at Sapsucker

2013-04-15 Thread Chris Pelkie
I went over to the northeast bend of Brown Rd (S) for sparrows this AM but
batted out on Vespers and Savannahs. I found SONG SPARROW, CHIPPING SPARROW,
AMERICAN TREE SPARROW by the third parking lot along with EASTERN PHOEBE, TREE
SWALLOW, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, and Starlings, Robins, Jays, Crows, Chickadees,
etc. Then hearing trilling that didn't seem long enough to be Chipping, I
started for the marshy field to the east of the parking lot. Just as I turned
in that direction, a strange call put me on a rapidly descending Snipe sp.
(just a silhouette) who landed in that field. After reaching a good view of the
marsh grasses and shrubs, I easily found singing SWAMP SPARROW in numbers, some
sitting high on low shrubs to give good views while trilling. In between
traffic noise, I clearly heard the kid-DICK kid-DICK kid-DICK of a VIRGINIA
RAIL male song several times, at intervals of several minutes. Never saw it as
it was down in the weeds. No response calls.

For a day promising to be nice later, I got sprinkled on twice by cold rain in
the hour I was out. Birding!
