[cayugabirds-l] Winter Wren / Song Sparrow

2022-02-04 Thread Annette Nadeau
Yesterday on a noon-time walk along Rumsey Road in Trumansburg, I came upon
my FOY Winter Wren, hopping around on the ground near running water.
Probably about to get a drink. Such an adorable little bird.
Also, I have a Song Sparrow regularly feeding on seeds I sprinkle on the
front porch.

2021-03-25 Thread Suan Yong
On a short morning walk along six mile creek upstream from second dam I heard a
singing winter wren and brown creeper. Two days ago there were some 50
ring-necked ducks in the second reservoir, this morning it looks like there are
a handful still there.

2020-03-27 Thread Melissa Groo
Yesterday my husband said he thought he heard a Winter Wren for the first
time this spring, from down along the stream below our house next to and
north of Shindagin Hollow State Forest in Caroline. This morning I was
thrilled to wake up to the sound of one singing at around 6:40 am, from
down in the ravine. No more wonderful sound of spring to me!

2020-03-26 Thread bob mcguire
I just returned from a long morning’s walk in the McIlroy Preserve, Summerhill
NY. By far the greatest highlight was a WINTER WREN singing lustily from along
side the yellow trail (keep right on the way in). It came to within 20 feet of
me in response to playback and went on to sing continuously for at least five
minutes.

The other highlight was a Red-bellied Woodpecker calling and drumming in the
marshy area at the SW corner of the preserve. It eventually disappeared from
view and then emerged (head only) from a cavity, continuing to call.

[cayugabirds-l] Winter Wren, Virginia Rail

2016-04-24 Thread Geo Kloppel
On a short walk west from Michigan Hollow Road up the south leg of the Abbotts
Loop Trail, Pat and I found a Winter Wren singing near a promising nest site
(overturned tree roots), a few Blue-headed Vireos, some Ruby-crowned Kinglets,
etc.

Earlier we stopped at the little marsh in front of the old county landfill,
hoping for Virginia Rail, and were not disappointed! I got out of the car and
said hello to Meena, who was already there. As we exchanged greetings, a series
of grunts came from the cattails on the north side of the causeway. Over the
next few minutes we had a nice encounter with a talkative Virginia Rail, who
gave "kiddick" calls and a series of grunts, and eventually left its hiding
place to walk around in the (comparative) open.

Earlier still, we looked in on the heron colony at Sylvan Lane, to find about a
dozen Great Blues hanging around the nests, sitting the nests, or fussing with
sticks.

[cayugabirds-l] Winter Wren and Mundy and Salmon Creek Road

2015-07-03 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
Hi all,

Mundy Winter Wren seem to continue in Mundy. Yesterday he serenaded me with his
lovely song for quite some 10 minutes or so. Hope he has found a partner and
has been successful in raising a family. In my yard baby House Wrens are going
nuts. They seem to follow their parents like crazy and parents scold me as soon
as I get out of the house. Chimney swifts from the Human Resources building
also have fledged young. I see them flying around twittering and parents feed
them in flight from my office window.

Yesterday evening I went to Salmon Creek in the hopes of recording some birds.
My hopes were squashed by the non-stop cars that passed the area and also a
loud lawn mower heard for more than half a mile killed my appetite for
recording. So I ended up just looking for birds.

I found a pair of juvenile Sapsuckers feeding on a sap holes in a walnut tree,
this is the first time I have seen them on walnuts. A couple of butterflies
and a hummingbird also seem to be exploiting the sap holes. I found a nest of
a Red-bellied Woodpecker, the hole was just below a large bracket mushroom
which looked like made a nice roof for the nest like you see in cartoon movies.
I wonder if the woodpeckers chose to make hole specifically under toads
umbrella or it was just a coincidence. I think I heard a couple of calls of
ACADIAN FLYCATCHER from the typical location along the small stream while I was
rolling down the hill slowly in my car. When I stopped to listen specifically
it never called again.

There were Veery, Wood Thrushes, Scarlet Tanagers, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks,
Indigo Bunting, Pileated Woodpecker and a Peewee. Also Yellow Warbler and
Chestnut-sided Warblers. But I missed the familiar Blue-winged warbler,
Mourning Warbler, Redstarts, Cerulean and Cuckoos which used to be there in the
past.

Then I drove via French Hill Road and Holden road to Brown Hill Road, which
used to have abundant Savannah Sparrows. I saw only one Savannah Sparrow on the
road and no Grasshopper sparrows. On Gulf Road, I came across several
Chestnut-sided and Am. Redstarts and Wood Thrushes.

The area has changed a whole lot and traffic seemed to have increased a fair
bit in these locations. But it was still nice to see some of the familiar
friends along the road.

Cheers

HI Meena,

this area is very noisy in the summer. (Lang Elliott and I have sometimes been
at Salt Pt/Lansing Pk video/sound-recording during this spring/summer. Best is
very early on a Sunday morning! Don't go out to Lansing today...their fireworks
are tonight and the place is a zoo already.

WOuld you share the locations of the sapsucker and RBWoodpecker? Lang and/or I
would be interested in these.

Thanks very much

[cayugabirds-l] Winter Wren in Lab of O parking lot

2015-01-06 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
I had a WINTER WREN along the boardwalk between the parking lots at the Lab
this morning. I heard a couple of ticks, then it popped up briefly to pishing,
and disappeared in the thick grass clumps among the trees. That's the woodsy
area north of the visitor parking lot.

No geese on the pond here this morning.

Our SFO group heard the beautiful song of a winter wren this morning at Monkey

heard. Other notable sightings there include a pair of purple finches (along
the rail bed) offering good diagnostic looks, and a red-bellied woodpecker
calling from an apparent nest hole (part of a near-sweep of woodpeckers, along
with a brilliant male sapsucker, cooperative hairy, flicker calling
continuously from an exposed perch).

Earlier we checked out the Park Preserve - including the new boardwalk area
adjacent to Hammond Hill - though the birding was relatively quiet (possibly
correlated to the white stuff that continues to fall from the sky), but we did
get scope views of three heron nests at the rookery, good below-eye-level looks
at golden-crowned kinglets - including one whose crown was almost orange, and
distant drumming of ruffed grouse. Also, on multiple occasions throughout the
morning we saw small flying groups of great blue herons - in 4s, 2s, 4s again.

At Mt. Pleasant a perched kestrel gave good looks before flying off, in so
doing flushing a savannah sparrow from the field up to the same tree. Not much
else happened there then. When departing we disturbed 4-5 turkey vultures
investigating a freshly road-killed possum; we pulled off to await their
return, and for a while two of them worked the carcass for a bit, but not long
after we got out of the car they flew off to nearby perches for some good scope
views.

[cayugabirds-l] Winter Wren? @ Six Mile Creek

2013-02-26 Thread Suan Hsi Yong
At the Mullholland preserve this morning I thought I heard a winter
wren singing across the rippling sound from the creek, but when I got
closer all I heard were junco trills. This was pretty close to the
parking lot.

At about the same time there was an odd whistling call -- something
between a single titmouse peter and a redtail hawk -- which I
eventually concluded to be a blue jay, but without binoculars I
couldn't be sure.

[cayugabirds-l] Winter Wren Spotted!

2011-06-24 Thread Sandy Podulka

Hi Folks,
Thanks to everyone who sent Winter Wren sites in response to my
plea. After three mornings of looking, my friend finally got a decent
(but brief) binocular view of a singing Winter Wren in Shindagin
Hollow State Forest this morning. It was at the south end of the
Balsam Swamp along Shindagin Hollow Road, just before the clearing
and beaver ponds as you head south.
Just walking along that road was beautiful and great for birds--we
heard all sorts of birds even late in the day. Continuing south past
the junction with Gulf Creek Road, on the section of road that runs
along the stream on the left side of the road we found another area
with much bird activity.

[cayugabirds-l] Winter Wren Location?

2011-06-22 Thread Sandy Podulka

Hi Folks,
I have a friend visiting once again from North Carolina who wants to
see a Winter Wren. (I failed to deliver this bird last year.) The
friend has had hip replacements and can't walk too far on a bumpy
trail, but can hike in flat areas. Does anyone know a good spot near
Ithaca where one can actually see (not just hear) Winter Wren without
hiking way back in?

Thanks!

Sandy Podulka

[cayugabirds-l] Winter wren - Brooktondale

2011-03-29 Thread Melissa Groo

This morning I woke to my favorite sound of early spring, the exuberant,
spilling song of a Winter Wren in the valley by my house, next to Shindagin
Hollow State Forest. Six days later than I noted a winter wren's first arrival
here last year.

[cayugabirds-l] Winter Wren at Mundy

2009-10-06 Thread Meena Haribal
Today on my short Mundy lunch walk, I was stopped by a chuckling Winter
Wren. When I tried to locate him he hid behind the logs, but eventually
came out and sat boldly on the logs and yelled at me for looking at
him. Cute little guy. He was the base of stairs that come from Judd Falls
road side.

I also heard Golden-crowned Kinglets, but did not see them.

At the base of the stairs near Mundy buildings, close to Kentucky spot,
was a thrush in honeysuckle thickets that never allowed to me to a get a
good look at him. All I could see was movements and a brown bird.
