[cayugabirds-l] New yard bird

Imagine my surprise last night when I spotted a male Ring Neck Pheasant near 
the feeders.  It’s a new yard bird for me.  I got a few pics before he left.  I 
never expected to see him again.  Imagine my surprise this morning when I found 
him sitting on a teak table on my front porch!  I was unsuccessful get any more 
pictures.  When I last saw him, he was running for cover under the spruce trees 
out front.  Who knows.  Maybe he’ll stick around and I’ll get to see him again. 
 Nice way to start the day.  Well, he’s back under the south feeder scarfing up 
seed.  I thought I heard him call.  And now he’s parading around my garden.  
Fun, fun

As an aside, when I was a kid we lived in a newly developed part of Westvale, 
near Syracuse.  We were only the third house there so it was pretty wild.  
There were lots of pheasants back then.  My dad and a neighbor used to go 
upstairs and shoot pheasants from there.  No houses in that directions.  Over 
the years I rarely saw a pheasant

3-4 years ago a pea hen showed up at our place, eventually joining our flock of 
chickens.  We contacted neighbors near and far and did not find anyone to be 
missing a peahen.  It is still part of our flock.  If you don’t find its 
rightful home, we’d be interested in giving it a home.   --Marty

Just sharing pleasure of new species seen from our yard, a goatsucker.
I have had the good fortune to hear a Whip-poor-will on our property. Last 
night (Sat. 08/21) Gian Dodici thought he glimpsed a nighthawk passing by over 
head. At first it disappeared, but came back for a nice view. Haven't added a 
yard bird in a couple years. Nice to see.

Yesterday afternoon while I was gardening I heard a strange, intermittent 
squawking. I knew it was a bird I had never heard in my yard, but couldn’t 
identify it. I walked around under my trees with my binoculars, until I saw 
what appeared to be a heron perched in my maple tree, which abuts a tiny 
seasonal pond.  It continued to squawk and preen while I angled for a better 
view.  I was amazed to see that it was a green heron, which eventually flew 
away.

I didn’t think my backyard birding could get any better today, but it did.  I 
had this single “grackle” hanging around.  Eventually I realized it was too 
small for a grackle.  I thought, Rusty Blackbird?  So I looked it up in Sibley 
and yes, that’s what I have. It’s a new life list and yard bird for me.   I got 
pictures.  Just as I finished the Cooper’s hawk flew in after the birds. I 
don’t think it caught one.  I’d been watching about 8 Pine Siskins who finally 
found the nyger sock, 4 pairs of Cardinals, House Finches and Sparrows, 
Mourning Doves, Titmice, 10 Juncos,  and Chickadees.  I hadn’t seen the Siskins 
in several days.  The chickadees are just coming back in after the Cooper 
scare.  I tried to get a pic of Cooper in the crabapple but he flew.  Then a 
deer went through the back yard.  What a day!  I hope the Rusty Blackbird 
returns.

Just had a first in the yard---a Great Blue Heron.  And we don't have a
pond.  The biggest squall of the day just passed, having brought a pretty
dense snowfall.  The GBH may have become disoriented and just picked a
landing spot with no trees or brush to cause a hazardous landing.  This
morning a flock of about 200 Cedar Waxwings spent 15 minutes inspecting the
tallest trees around the field.  Weird day.  Snow all day but none on the
ground until the latest squall.

I added four new yard birds last week and another today: the white-throated 
sparrow!  It was perched on a tall wooden fence and then foraging in the soil 
of my garden. I live downtown near the high school and was so surprised as I've 
only seen them in more of an edge of a forest.

 I have been out 5 times since the end of February, scanning the southern skies 
for migrants of some kind.  So far nothing.  But today I got a new Yard bird 
when I watched a REDHEAD (as in the duck) circling the Firehall 4 times low.  
Not sure it was migrating, but it probably thought the extensive black asphalt 
around the building was water.

While we have often seen SNOW BUNTINGS from the yard, this morning we had one 
we could see from the kitchen window near the patio. It stuck around to pick 
the droppings from under the feeders. This a first of year for us and a new 
yard bird. Quite a pretty little bird. 

Yesterday while looking about for snowy owls in Varick (none seen) on my return 
home I saw a male RINGNECKED PHEASANT on Center Road in Ovid between Rock River 
and CR 129. He was walking somewhat cautiously across a flat field of deep snow 
with his tail feathers blowing in the wind-- a beautiful and regal splash of 
color in an otherwise black and white environment.

Besides being a new yard bird, it is a new computer-room-window bird.  I saw
a big dark shape cruising just above the trees outside our window and looked
closer to ID it.  It was a mature Bald Eagle.  Wow! What a thrilling bird. 

Earlier today, Shirley found our first Flicker of this winter on our
platform feeder. Our feeder count for the day is 20 species. No redpolls or
siskins.

uttered several calls, then finally flew south. 
I wish one of my dead trees had a large enough cavity for a nest.

Trivia follows



After 65 years of extensive feeding of birds in my yard, (OK, including homes 
of parents for Karen and John and our previous homes) and with dispersal of up 
to ~100 lb/wk of bird seed when there has been frequent, fresh snow fall, and 
after thousands of hours of observation; it is a rare treat to get great views 
of a new species feeding in our yard. OK, guess what species.



It is not really rare, just almost never seen in our yard habitat.



It is a bird of the field.

I know there are some killer yards out there, and some magic ones, that report 
wonderful birds and maybe if I stayed home more my yard total would increase, 
but I had my first Blackpoll Warbler this morning. I was excited enough to 
leave the coffee boiling too long.

At Ford Rd. yesterday while searching for Acadian Flycatcher there was a 
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher giving his loud Turree call. I have seen them here 
before, but not recently.

Went out with the dog and took the binocs looking for snow geese (didn't see 
them yet) or what else might be arriving.

Instead spotted several large lumps in the 70' basswood in the neighbors yard 
which at first I thought were the crows that roost there often (I shot photos 
of 17 at sunset a few days ago), but it turned out to be 4 immature TVs. Mom or 
Pop came soaring in a few minutes later and all took flight. I had counted 9 a 
few days ago as they briefly all flew in straight lines instead of swirling 
around and around as they usually do.

Anyway, while all that was going on, another raptor came soaring into the scene 
and I immediately ID'd my first yard Osprey. Whoo-hoo!
It soared around the house and grounds at about 300' in a big lazy 0 with nary 
a wing flap, giving me a great rotating view in the glasses, then flew off 
toward the lake (which is at least 1-2 mi as the osprey flies from my yard). So 
not sure what attracted him; maybe all the other big bird activity...
