[cayugabirds-l] Wood Thrush
Hi All, We had a Wood Thrush singing its heart out tonight here in the village of Skaneateles. That is a new yard bird. Must be all the trees we have planted make things a bit more attractive even if It is only a pit stop. On the other hand the Red-breasted Nuthatch pair continues in our yard. I thought they would have left by now. [cayugabirds-l] Wood Thrush
At noon on our hill I found a gorgeous male Baltimore Oriole singing in an apple tree, and while thrilling to that I was stunned to hear right behind me (in the spruce grove) the prolonged scolding of a Wood Thrush. (Confirmed this with BirdTunes when I came in-- they call it pit volleys!) And near the house a Warbling Vireo is combing the maple trees while humming to himself. WOW. RE: [cayugabirds-l] Wood thrush bonanza
Larry, When I did research on Wood Thrushes in central NY, I did hear this type of performance, and, if I recall correctly, particularly in the evening. I'm not sure what inspires that type of vocalization, though. I miss hearing Wood Thrush in good numbers like that. They were in the area between the water tank and the gazebo. I'm assuming these are local birds, which would be indicative of an excellent breeding season up there on the hill. One bird in particular fascinated me. It continuously went through a most impressive repertoire of what might be called guitar twanging. Most were single notes with occasional doublets, and every once in awhile it would briefly throw in the normal flute song. I stood there for a good 15 minutes enthralled by this bird's musical outpouring. I have never before heard a thrush perform like this. Has anyone else experienced a thrush doing this? Larry -- W.
