[cayugabirds-l] Woodcocks and Owls

Hello listserv,

The Cayuga Bird Club will be leading a woodcock and owling trip this
Saturday evening, with Stephanie and I as leaders. Alas, I won't have
much time to do any scouting. If anyone has intel on how well the
airport woodcocks are performing this season, or if you know of any
particularly cooperative woodcocks - who start dancing while it's
still relatively light out, and are reasonably viewable, I would
appreciate it.

Also any suggestions for owling would be useful, else we'll just defer
to picking a suitable habitat and trying.

[cayugabirds-l] woodcocks displaying - airport

A few weeks ago we heard at least 3 American Woodcocks peenting and
displaying in the brushy field on Mohawk Road (behind the airport). One of
them was close enough to not only see in the air, but also on the ground,
completing the entire display cycle in full view.

To get there, we take Snyder Road, turn right on Mohawk, and pull in at the
"service road. .

Last night I returned to the location and at at least 3 are still there
putting on a show.

[cayugabirds-l] Woodcocks, Cardinals

On another topic.  The other day I found a dead male Cardinal on our side 
patio.  There was no sign of trauma.  However, it reminded me of the awful day 
last spring when I found 4-5 dead Cardinals lined up on the same patio.  Again, 
no sign of trauma.  There are windows they could have struck; I have decals on 
them to help with prevention (I’m aware the decals are not a complete 
solution).  But they were lined up so neatly I couldn’t believe it was 
accidental.  Had they been killed by a hawk, I would not have expected the 
bodies to be there.  We have indoor cats but they never go out.  There are 
other cats around but not that close to the house;  even if they were close our 
cats would let us know I’m sure.

I have some photos of the immediate area of the house if it would help.  I 
would really be interested in any ideas, advice, etc. anyone has.

On Dodge Rd there are curremtly five woodcocks displaying. Plus a bonus 
winnowing snipe. Right now about 400 ft from Ellis Hollows road jct two of the 
woodcocks calling quite close to the road.

After reading the description of Woodcock lek habitat (am I using the 
term correctly??), it occurred to me that they might be present in the 
field next to and behind my house so I stomped out through my marshy 
backyard and through the little woodlot to the edge. Sure enough, I 
heard peenting! Didn't dare venture farther since a) I had foolishly 
neglected to bring a flashlight with which to find my way back; and b) I 
didn't want to risk disturbing the birds.


On Monday evening at the airport I heard peenting but could not get a 
visual. Tonight I tried again and heard both peenting and the whistling 
audio of the display but again could not find a bird with my binoculars. 
Also heard what sounded like a Great Horned Owl from somewhere in the 
woods east of Mohawk Road.

I'm not sure what they'd do in a really ferocious windstorm, but normal windy 
conditions shouldn't stop them. After all, the display is a show of fitness.

But wind might well make it harder for you to hear and observe them.

Last evening around 8:00 I stopped at the intersection of Snyder and Mohawk 
behind the Ithaca airport. At least 4 woodcocks (from all directions) were 
peenting and I could hear at least two skydancing. Fun!

[cayugabirds-l] Woodcocks displaying in NE Ithaca

Woodcocks have been displaying reliably for the last week or so, starting
around 7:45 every evening, along the road that parallels the Northwood
Apts. off Warren Rd.

There were at least 4-5 individual displaying concurrently this evening.
The major display areas seem to be the open field between the Northwood
Apts. and the Kensington Townhouses to the west, and the wet woods at the
end of the road where the Village of Lansing Greenway begins.

The cool spring weather so far really hasn't been that cool relative to normal. 
In Ithaca
the average March temperature was only 1.9 degrees below the long term average.
Compared to last year, it was very cold since last March was 12.8 degrees above 
average!!!
How soon we forget that we live in a cold climate!!!  

The jet stream patterns are exactly as described below, much farther south, 
related to
the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) which is in its negative or cold phase 
this spring so far.

Last year, the NAO was positive and hence the eastern U.S was warm! The NAO 
varies rapidly
from week to week but can be predominately in one phase for a prolong time 
period... i.e this
past March/early April. The NAO has been dropping recently in the long term 
mean and some 
have tied this to the loss of sea ice in the Arctic. My personal  professional 
opinion (not NOAA's!!) is 
that it is premature to be making this kind of cause and effect.  The NAO was 
predominately in a 
negative/cold phase in the 1960s and 1970s, returned to a positive/warm phase 
in the 1980s, 
peaking in the 1990s and has been falling ever since the 1990s peak. It is 
cyclical.

I also remember in the 1990s climate scientists were blaming the positive/warm 
phase of the NAO on anthropogenic
global warming! Now they are blaming the cold phase on global warming? What 
about the 1960s and 1970s
when the NAO was in the cool/negative phase?? Sea ice was much higher. I think 
the jury is still out
on this one. 

What is interesting is that even with a negative NAO, it was only slightly 
below normal temperature-wise
in March. In the past, a strongly negative NAO usually yielded MUCH colder 
temperatures, like March 1960
which was 10 degrees below normal with a negative NAO. That might be related to 
a global warming
signal...negative NAO patterns don't yield the kind of cold they used to. 

As far as woodcocks go, maybe they don't display as much when it is colder and 
windy so they are
not detected as much? Plus, are they as many people out on cold nights? These 
are just things to consider
also...

I suspect the cool weather has a lot to do with it. I believe that we are 
having a significantly cooler-than-normal spring, due to the Jet Stream being 
slightly farther south or much broader than usual. This, as I understand it, is 
directly correlated to the reduction in sea ice in the arctic which in turn 
creates a weakened pressure differential north of the Jet Stream, allowing the 
cold arctic air to spill much farther south than normal.

Woodcock do not breed on my steep hillside overlooking West Danby, but I 
usually see a few displays in my fields from stopover migrants pumped up on 
hormones. This suggests that the first individuals to arrive and display in 
favorable locations might not necessarily be the ones that will be found 
breeding there a few weeks later...

I suspect the cool weather has a lot to do with it. I believe that we are 
having a significantly cooler-than-normal spring, due to the Jet Stream being 
slightly farther south or much broader than usual. This, as I understand it, is 
directly correlated to the reduction in sea ice in the arctic which in turn 
creates a weakened pressure differential north of the Jet Stream, allowing the 
cold arctic air to spill much farther south than normal.

I'm pretty sure I saw a Woodcock out the back of my house on Cosmos Hill west 
of Homer at about 6pm last night (Thursday 4th).  I was walking in an area 
between a field and scrub, and it just shot up in from of me.

Ann Mitchell and I went out looking for owls yesterday evening,  stating
early enough to heard Woodcocks as well.  We found what I will confidently
say were at least 5 individual Woodcock behind the airport near where
Snyder  and Mohawk meet. We were in the vicinity till well after 9 but
could not raise a hoot in terms of owls (tried for Saw-whet, Screech and
Barred in that order in various spots along Mohawk and Neimi Rds.)
Afterwards we stopped on Sapsucker Woods Rd at the trail crossing, only
trying for Barred, with  the same result...

I have not heard any Woodcock at home,  but have only been listening in a
cursory manner as our upper fields, where we regularly have them,  are
still snow covered...

[cayugabirds-l] Woodcocks, Winter Wren on South Hill Trail

I heard three Woodcocks on the South Hill trail above Juniper this morning 
around 0645-0710h  dst.  Two were spaced about 150 yards apart in the thick 
brush below the trail opposite the backyards of the houses on Northview.  I 
heard one definite display flight.  I heard the third bird peeting from a field 
off the trail to the east about a half-mile uptrail from Juniper.  On my return 
trip I heard a Winter Wren singing near the Northview backyards.

Horseback riding in Aurelius on trails through wet fields/woods, the farm owner 
and I scared up a family of woodcocks:  four flew, one went into the grasses by 
the trail.  An exciting first for both of us.

I heard 1 WOODCOCK peenting atop Bald Hill south of Brooktondale this
evening.  Also heard 1 peenting in the big, recently mowed field along
Boiceville Rd., along with several sounds that Stokes describes as kakak
calls, which indicate aggressive interactions between individuals-so at
least 3 WOODCOCK along Boiceville.  Check them out, Annette.
