RE: [cayugabirds-l] OOB bird behavior
About begging birds, in Ocala National Forest campgrounds Boat-tailed (I think that was what they were) grackles and Red-bellied Woodpeckers waited for hand outs and eat tid bits fallen around. A red-bellied loved to eat cheese crackers and wait for my colleagues to offer him the crackers, if not he called to get their attention! Marie's Australia reference reminds me with my encounter of a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo in Royal national park. I was having my lunch in the picnic area. The cockatoo landed on my bench a foot away from me, and walked around as if sniffing. I had something in my hand, which did not seem to be of interest. Then he wanted to see what was in the bag. He went to bag and looked at me as if to demand, open the bag I want to see what is in there. I tired tell him that this is not his kind of food and I am not giving hand outs and he should go find his own food. I don't like feeding wild birds. But he was very insistent to see what is in the bag, like curious a kid wanting to see what is in the bag. Finally, I gave in and told him there are spicy parathas in the bag, which my friend had made for me. I opened the bag showed him the contents and also gave him a small piece of paratha. He sniffed at it and knew he did not like it. Then he left. This whole episode must have taken about 6-7 minutes. Another older couple nearby me had closed their bags were ready to leave if he flew to them. They told me that these birds can be aggressive. The Sulphur Crested Cockatoos are very large birds with powerful beaks and talons. But his beady eyes were very expressive. He would turn his head and look at me to get my attention.
