Re: [cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk perched in Sapsucker Woods, Sunday 9/16

2018-09-19 Thread Jay McGowan
Interestingly, the (presumably same) COMMON NIGHTHAWK is back roosting
above the base of the Sherwood Platform on the Wilson Trail North at
Sapsucker Woods this morning, just one branch back from where it was on
Sunday.

Thanks, Mark! Nighthawk is still there at 11:30 am - perched in the tree
that you described.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk in Collegetown?

2018-05-13 Thread Geo Kloppel
Hi Tom,

Very likely. The sound of Nighthawks over collegetown (and downtown Ithaca) is
a fond memory of summer from the sixties and seventies, when they still bred
here.

Migrants seem to linger here for a few days, just long enough to make me wonder
if they might take it up again some year.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk

2013-05-19 Thread Geo Kloppel
Yes. The date is perfect, any hour is possible, and the east hill location
seems natural to me - I will forever associate Nighthawks with the skies over
collegetown, 45 years ago when they still bred in Ithaca.

Probably a number of birders will be staking out the city this evening,
watching the parks, the flood control channel, etc.

got a very brief look as they passed about 50' above the apartments being
built on the left side of the road and disappeared (and we couldn't stop).
They had long, pointed wings and slender bodies. Although only seen for a
very few seconds, we saw them make the jerky, bobbing movements that we
associate with this species. Would they be here now, and would they be
flying at that time of the morning?

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk

2013-05-19 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
When we lived in Ith. '61-'71 we always enjoyed seeing hearing nighthawks
over Montgomery Ward other stores, incl. JC Penney at what is now the west
end of the Commons. We weren't often downtown at night between '71 '91
when we lived in Dryden nor have we been downtown at night except a very few
times since coming to Union Springs in '91.

We saw several nighthawks along Bundy Rd. in the daytime about 2002, a
surprise to me at the time. I don't recall the time of the yr. but it could
have been spring since we often went out to look at spring flowers. At that
time I didn't consider myself a birder ... just an observer.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Common Nighthawk, Stewart Park

2012-05-18 Thread Dave Nutter
This evening Stuart Krasnoff, Gary Kohlenberg, and I spontaneously gathered by the Cascadilla Boathouse in Stewart Park at about 8:15pm. Around 8:30 Gary was the first to pick out a single COMMON NIGHTHAWK working its way north over Cayuga Inlet or Jetty Woods. It foraged over the vicinity of the lakeshore of Treman Marine Park for a minute or so before we lost it against West Hill, apparently headed north again. While not seeing any more nighthawks we amused ourselves by looking at the crescent of Venus through Stuart's scope.--Dave NutterOn May 18, 2012, at 10:06 AM, Jay McGowan jw...@cornell.edu wrote:Brad Walker, Livia Santana, Matt Medler, Emma Grieg, and I had a COMMON NIGHTHAWK at Stewart Park last night around dusk (8:20?).
