Re: [cayugabirds-l] Rough legged hawk

2022-02-05 Thread b_clise
I've seen one hunting lake road fields, cayuga county, 3 times in the past 8
days. A joy to see once, let alone 3 times. Hovering above the fields makes for
great views. Also, on monday, I saw 2 rough legged hawks on rte 90 just north
of union springs, on telephone pole and in tree right beside the road. They
both looked darker than the other one to me. Great sightings in this
area!Barbara CliseSent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy smartphone

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Rough legged hawk - and Mt Pleasant!

2022-02-05 Thread Marie P. Read
Interesting. I had one on Mt Pleasant Road around 10 am today, directly
opposite the observatory. Could be the same one wandering the area, I suppose.

First I've seen one this year, and indeed first one on Mt Pleasant for several
years although they used to be winter regulars up here.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Rough legged hawk

2016-01-19 Thread Dave Nutter
Looking at Google Maps terrain feature, which has some too lines as well as
creeks, and comparing that to the aerial view to show field v forest, it
appears that the divide is west of Potomac Rd about halfway between Potomac Rd
and the west edge of the field along Searsburg Rd. The Interloken Trail appears
to be close to or on the divide where it crosses Searsburg Rd. So, most of
those fields are in the Cayuga Lake Basin along both sides of Potomac, but the
western extreme along Searsburg is out.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Rough-legged Hawk Dark Phase

2014-03-04 Thread Jeff Gerbracht
Dark Rough-legs are one of my favorite birds and I've noticed there seem to
be more around this year. I took a quick look at my eBird sightings for
these and in addition to the one on Burdick Hill, I've seen dark birds
multiple times at Freese Rd, Mt Pleasant, Midline Rd. and along Buffalo Rd
in Caroline. Most recently, there were two on my drive to the lab this
morning, one along Freese and one on Mt Pleasant.
Great winter to be out looking for hawks,
Jeff

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Rough-legged Hawk

2011-01-19 Thread Marie P Read
Seems like that Rough-legged is using that row of conifers as a regular perch -
one was there yesterday too. Yesterday, I estimated there were at least 3 maybe
more Rough-leggeds at the airport - one dark-morph and possibly 2 light morphs.
Trying to photograph them in flight. There was also a female-plumage Northern
Harrier feeding on something very close to the road at one point. It's a good
place to watch these raptors.

Shortly after 8 this morning while driving on Warren Rd I found a
Rough-legged Hawk sitting on a small Cedar(?) across the road from the
